In 7 Days to Die, an infection is a percentage-based injury effect that becomes more dangerous as it advances. Honey removes 5 percentage points, Herbal Antibiotics remove 10, and Antibiotics remove 25, but none of them works as an instant full cure. Medicine works over time, and further zombie or animal hits can worsen the infection while you are treating it.
Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The key survival rule is to treat early, use the weakest medicine that can finish the cure, and stop taking hits. At 100 percent, the infection kills your character.

How the four infection stages work
Infection is tracked from a small starting value up to 100 percent. The official infection overview divides that range into four stages. The percentage thresholds and penalties are the most useful information to check when deciding whether to spend a rare Antibiotic or conserve it.
| Stage | Infection level | Effect while untreated | Effect while being treated | What to use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stage 1: Mild Infection | 0.1–13.9% | No listed penalty. If untreated, this stage lasts about one real-time hour before progressing. | No adverse effect is listed for this stage. | Honey, Herbal Antibiotics, or Antibiotics. |
| Stage 2: Infection | 14–56.9% | 25% slower stamina regeneration. | About 12.5% slower stamina regeneration while medicine is working. | Choose the weakest medicine that can complete the cure in time. |
| Stage 3: Severe Infection | 57–99.9% | 35% slower stamina regeneration and a one-point reduction to every Attribute. | The one-point Attribute reduction remains; the stamina-regeneration penalty falls to about 17% in the overview. | Herbal Antibiotics or, preferably, Antibiotics when the percentage is high. |
| Stage 4 | 100% | Death. | There is no treatment window at this value. | Prevent reaching 100%. |
The game’s death message is explicit: “You have died from an infection.” Because the indexed official pages do not expose a definitive platform or game-version tag for these values, check the current in-game tooltip and patch notes if you are playing a version released after the figures above were documented.

How infection rises and falls
Untreated progression
The infection overview reports an untreated increase of approximately 0.005 percentage points per second, or about 0.3 percentage points per minute. That is an average rate, not a promise that every build or difficulty setting will display exactly the same timing. Stage 1 is described as lasting about one real-time hour before progressing when untreated, so do not treat the first stage as a permanent safe state.
Treated progression
When medicine is active, the same overview reports a decrease of roughly 0.007 percentage points per second, or about 0.4 percentage points per minute. The reduction happens over the treatment period rather than appearing as an immediate subtraction from the status bar. You must therefore remain alive and avoid new injuries while the cure runs.
Why additional hits matter
Infection is more likely after critical injuries, and critical injuries become more common when you take hits in a row. A player who keeps trading melee blows while already infected can push the percentage upward faster or undo the time gained from treatment. Break contact, use cover, and recover before returning to a fight.

Every listed treatment and its strength
| Treatment | Infection reduction | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jar of Honey | 5 percentage points | Low Stage 1 infection or a small amount remaining after another treatment. | Too weak by itself for a high Stage 2 or Stage 3 infection unless you can take several doses and wait for the timer. |
| Honey Tea | 5 percentage points | The same low-level situations as a Jar of Honey. | It is not stronger than ordinary Honey for infection removal. |
| Honey Glazed Sham | 5 percentage points | Early infection when a small reduction is sufficient. | Do not assume the food’s other effects increase its infection cure strength. |
| Honey Brisket | 5 percentage points | Early infection or a final small reduction. | Its infection value is still 5 percentage points. |
| Herbal Antibiotics | 10 percentage points | Moderate infection when you have no need to reserve stronger medicine. | It may take several doses at higher percentages. |
| Antibiotics | 25 percentage points | Severe infection or a percentage high enough that weaker items would take too long. | It is the strongest listed treatment and should be conserved when a weaker cure will finish the job. |
The reductions are treatment strengths, not an instruction to expect the infection meter to disappear the moment you consume an item. The cure continues on its timer. Taking multiple cures in succession can extend that timer, which is useful when the infection is high but also means you can waste strong medicine if you dose without checking the current percentage.
Step-by-step: curing an infection safely
- Open your status effects and identify the percentage. Confirm whether you are in Stage 1, Stage 2, or Stage 3. The stage determines how urgently you must stop fighting and how much stamina and Attribute performance you have already lost.
- Leave the source of damage. Stop fighting, move away from wandering zombies and animals, and avoid traps or falls that could create another critical injury. A cure cannot protect you from continued attacks.
- Pick the weakest sufficient treatment. Use a 5-point Honey item for a small Stage 1 infection, Herbal Antibiotics for a moderate amount, and Antibiotics when the percentage is high or time is limited. Preserve Antibiotics if a weaker item can complete the cure.
- Consume the item and watch the timer. The infection decreases over time. Do not assume that one dose has instantly removed its full listed amount.
- Stay safe while treatment runs. Use a secure room, vehicle, elevated position, or other defensible location. Keep food, water, a weapon, and an escape route available because the active penalties can make a sudden fight harder.
- Recheck the percentage before taking another dose. If the level is still falling and the timer will finish the cure, do not automatically stack another expensive item. If the infection remains too high for the current timer, take another dose; successive cures can extend the treatment period.
- Confirm the effect has ended. Continue checking the status display until the infection and its penalties are gone. Returning to combat before that point risks another critical injury and renewed progression.
How many doses do you need?
There is no single dose count that fits every case because the answer depends on your current percentage, the item’s strength, and how long you can remain protected while the treatment works. Use the listed strengths as planning values and leave room for the fact that medicine acts over time.
Low Stage 1 example
If the display is near the bottom of Stage 1, one 5-point Honey item may be enough. If the percentage is above that treatment strength, a second Honey-type dose or one Herbal Antibiotic is a more rational choice than immediately spending an Antibiotic. Check the timer rather than taking all possible items at once.

Moderate Stage 2 example
At a mid-range Stage 2 value, several 10-point Herbal Antibiotics can provide the needed treatment strength while preserving Antibiotics for a severe case. If you are under pressure, cannot secure a safe location, or the infection is approaching Stage 3, the 25-point Antibiotic reduces the number of treatment cycles you must survive.
High Stage 3 example
Near 100 percent, the Antibiotics page notes that four doses may be required. Four 25-point treatment strengths equal 100 points in nominal planning terms, but the game still applies the cure over time, and new hits can add danger. Treat this as an emergency: get to safety first, then dose and monitor the status effect.
Why “four Antibiotics” is not a universal rule
The four-dose note applies to an infection near 100 percent. A character at a much lower percentage may need fewer doses, while a character who is struck again can need more treatment than the original calculation. Always calculate from the current display and recheck after each cure timer instead of following a fixed number blindly.

What the penalties mean in play
Stage 1: a warning without a combat penalty
Stage 1 has no listed adverse effect, which makes it the easiest point at which to treat the condition. The absence of a penalty does not mean the infection is harmless: leaving it untreated allows it to progress toward the stamina and Attribute penalties of later stages.
Stage 2: stamina becomes the limiting resource
The principal Stage 2 problem is stamina regeneration. Sprinting, power attacks, blocking, mining, and other stamina-dependent actions recover more slowly. A fight that was manageable before the infection can become dangerous because you cannot regenerate between swings or escapes as quickly.
Stage 3: stamina and Attributes are both impaired
Stage 3 adds a one-point penalty to every Attribute on top of the larger stamina-regeneration penalty. That broad reduction affects the way your build performs, so carrying on with normal exploration or melee combat is especially risky. Treat Stage 3 as a medical emergency rather than a debuff to work around.

Prevention and damage control
- Prevent repeated hits. Infection is more likely after critical injuries, and consecutive hits make critical injuries more common. Back away, use terrain, and avoid being surrounded.
- Keep an early-cure supply. Carry at least one 5-point Honey treatment for a low infection and reserve Herbal Antibiotics or Antibiotics for situations that justify their greater strength.
- Use Vitamins for prevention only. Vitamins prevent a new infection for the duration of their buff, but they do not cure or reduce an infection that is already active.
- Do not confuse food effects with infection strength. Honey Tea, Honey Glazed Sham, and Honey Brisket each provide the same 5-point infection reduction as a Jar of Honey.
- Plan a safe treatment location. A locked room, defensible base section, or other protected position is part of the cure strategy because every new hit can lengthen the crisis.
Troubleshooting common mistakes
“I used medicine, but the infection did not vanish.”
That is expected if you are watching for an instant subtraction. The listed treatment amount is applied through the cure process. Keep the status effect active until the timer has run and the percentage has fallen away.
“I took another dose and the infection still seems present.”
Additional doses can extend the cure timer rather than producing an immediate full clear. Wait in safety, then recheck the percentage. If you were hit again, the new damage may have offset part of the treatment.

Stage 2 and Stage 3 retain a reduced stamina-regeneration penalty while treatment is active. The treated penalty is lower than the untreated one, but it does not disappear immediately. Stage 3 also keeps its one-point Attribute reduction during treatment.
“Can Vitamins cure me?”
No. Vitamins are preventive: they block a new infection during their buff duration. They do not reduce an existing percentage or replace Honey, Herbal Antibiotics, or Antibiotics.
“The numbers differ from my game.”
The indexed official pages do not identify a definitive version or platform for these values. Updates can change balance or wording. Use the live in-game tooltip and current patch notes as the final authority for your installed version, especially if a threshold, penalty, or treatment value does not match this guide.
A practical treatment decision
Use this order whenever the infection appears: first stop taking damage, then read the percentage, then select the least powerful item that can finish the cure before the condition becomes dangerous. Honey-strength items are appropriate for small amounts; Herbal Antibiotics cover a larger middle range; Antibiotics are the 25-point emergency option and the most efficient choice when the infection is severe or close to 100 percent. Remain protected until the effect has fully cleared, because surviving the treatment timer is as important as choosing the right medicine.
