1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can make smart home sensors less conspicuous without making them less useful: place them out of the main sightline, but keep their sensing area clear. Motion sensors need an unobstructed view, contact sensors need aligned halves, leak detectors need access to the floor, and temperature sensors need a representative spot. Follow the instructions for your exact model and test it after mounting.
1. A room corner for a motion sensor
A corner can keep a sensor out of the way while giving it a broad view of the room. Ring recommends this position because it can cover the room and detect side-to-side movement. Ring’s placement guidance also emphasizes that the sensor should not be blocked.

Keep it clear of furniture, curtains and other objects that interrupt its view. Avoid direct sunlight and nearby heat sources, which can affect detection or contribute to false alarms. Check your model’s instructions for its mounting height and orientation.

2. A hallway or room that people cross often
Place a motion sensor where it can watch a likely route through a high-traffic area. For a passive infrared (PIR) sensor, a path across its field of view may be more detectable than movement straight toward it. Leviton’s guidance likewise advises considering the direction people are likely to move and keeping the sensor’s view clear. Leviton’s installation instructions

- ZIGBEE STANDARD COMPATIBLE MOTION SENSOR: Works with compatible Zigbee hubs or Echo devices with Zigbee hub built-in, such as Echo (4th Gen), Echo Plus (1st Gen and 2nd Gen), Echo Studio, Eero 6, Eero Pro 6, Home Assistant, SmartThings 2015/2018, Aeotec, Hubitat, Homey Bridge, Homey Pro, Third reality Hub and Third Reality Smart Speaker. Zigbee Hub Required.
- CREATE ROUTINES: Using the Alexa app, create your own routines that are triggered when motion is detected. Customize Alexa messages like “Welcome Home” or “Motion Detected in Living Room” when motion is detected.
- SMART LIGHT CONTROL: If you have a smart light or smart plug connected to the Alexa service, you can create a routine in the Alexa app that will enable it to automatically turn on when motion is detected (and off when no motion is detected for a period of time that you specify).
- HASSLE-FREE SETUP: Installs in a few seconds. Just make sure device in paring mode and compatible Echo device automatically discovers it by saying “Alexa, discover devices”. Only for indoor use.
- GREAT RANGE AND LONG BATTERY LIFE : Capable of detecting motion up to 20 feet (6 meters) away. 2 AAA batteries can last for 2 years in typical usage.
Choose the position and height specified for your particular model rather than assuming one mounting height works for every sensor. Avoid vents, strong airflow, heat sources and obstructions that could affect detection.
3. Behind a valuable item, if you want to detect its movement
A motion sensor behind a large item such as a television can be useful when the goal is to detect someone moving that item. Ring includes this as a placement option for that specific purpose. The same guidance should not be read as a recommendation to hide a sensor behind an object when you expect it to monitor the whole room: the object may block the sensor’s view.
4. On the indoor edge of a door or window
A contact sensor can be discreet on a door or window frame, with its matching magnet on the moving part. The two pieces must align when the opening is shut and separate when it opens; each model has its own allowable gap. Avoid the hinge side and locations where the sensor could be knocked or struck. DO’s placement guide covers these practical considerations.

- 【App Real-Time Remote Monitor】The smart motion sensor is compatible with Smart Life App and Tuya Smart App. No matter where you are, you can monitor the home security in real-time.
- 【Receive Alert Notification】 You will receive an App push alert notification when the wifi motion sensor detects any movements. With 128° detect range and 6 meters detect distance, the wireless motion sensor can be the first line of your home security defence.
- 【Supported Voice Commanded】The motion sensor is compatible with Alexa. Using the Alexa app, create your own routines that are triggered when motion is detected. Customize Alexa messages like “Welcome Home” or “Motion Detected in Living Room” when motion is detected.
- 【Smart Light Control】Turn on light automatically when you come back. If you have a smart light or smart plug connected to the App, you can create a smart routine in the Smart Life app that will enable it to automatically turn on when motion is detected (and off when no motion is detected for a period of time that you specify).
- 【Widely Application】On the one hand the motion sensor can be used to convenient your life. Such as, turn on the living room light automatically when you come back home. On the other hand, it can be regards as the home security system to protect property safety.
Test the opening in the app or hub after installation, both while closed and while opening. If the status does not change reliably, adjust the position according to the device’s instructions.
5. Inside a cabinet, safe or other object that opens
Contact sensors can also monitor an object rather than a room opening: examples include a cabinet, safe, trash can or cookie jar. Attach one part to the fixed section and the other to the moving section so they come close together when shut and separate when opened. DO’s guide describes these less obvious uses.
Before relying on the alert, check the manufacturer’s spacing instructions and test the object through a full open-and-close cycle. A sensor that is too far from its partner when shut may report the wrong state.

6. At floor level near a likely leak source
A leak sensor works best where water can reach it: place it on the floor near a sink, toilet, water heater, dishwasher, refrigerator or HVAC equipment. If the floor slopes, a low point where water is likely to collect may be more useful than a hidden spot on a shelf. Keep the detector close to the risk area without putting it where people are likely to step on it. DO’s sensor placement guide

For useful temperature or humidity readings, place the sensor at a height representative of the area you want to measure. Do not tuck it beside a heater, in the path of a vent, in direct sunlight or where rain can reach it; those local conditions can make its reading misleading. Xiaomi’s sensor guidance also stresses avoiding obstructions and considering airflow and heat. Xiaomi’s placement guidance

Some models may be suitable for a shaded or partly exposed outdoor location, but weather resistance varies. DO says its temperature/humidity sensor can be used in a shaded or semi-exposed outdoor spot while warning against direct sun and rain; check the rating and instructions for your own device before placing it outside. DO’s guide
What to check before hiding a sensor
- Motion: Keep the sensing area unobstructed, consider the direction people cross it, and avoid heat, sunlight and disruptive airflow.
- Contact: Align the sensor and magnet, stay within the model’s gap limit, and make sure opening the door, window or object changes its reported state.
- Leak: Put the detector where water can reach it, especially where water is likely to collect.
- Temperature and humidity: Choose a representative location away from local heat, vents, direct sun and rain; check the device’s environmental rating.
- All types: Confirm hub compatibility and range, preserve access for battery replacement, and test the sensor and its app or hub status after mounting.
Concealment is a visual choice, not a reason to cover a sensor or ignore its installation limits. Mounting height, contact gap, environmental rating and wireless range vary by model, so the device’s own instructions take precedence over general placement ideas.
