AI agents can take the first pass at repetitive digital chores—gathering information, organizing notes, or drafting routine text—if they have the right tools and access. The safest jobs leave you with a result to review, not a consequential action already taken. Here are seven practical starting points, including a personal favorite: finding possible meeting times without letting the agent send an invitation.
What makes a chore a good job for an AI agent?
An agent is a model that can direct its own tool use through a task: plan, act, observe what happened, and adjust. That differs from a fixed script, but it does not mean the agent can do anything in any app. Its reach depends on its instructions, enabled tools, permissions, and environment. Anthropic explains this distinction in its guide to building effective agents.

Start with a task that is routine, bounded, and easy to check. Give the agent only the access it needs, prefer read-only or draft-only permissions, and keep a person in control before it sends, schedules, submits, purchases, or deletes. That matters because an agent can misunderstand a request, click the wrong control, or encounter malicious instructions embedded in a webpage or document. Google’s guidance on agentic capabilities warns about these risks and recommends monitoring important tasks.

Use this for a question you revisit—such as what changed in a product category, what a policy says, or which sources explain a technical issue. An agent with web-search access can collect relevant pages and produce a short summary with links, instead of leaving you with an undifferentiated pile of search results. Internet research and summarization are among the documented agent capability areas described by the UK Government’s AI capabilities and workforce skills report.

“Find current, authoritative sources on [question]. Summarize the main points in five bullets, link every factual claim to its source, and list disagreements or points you could not verify. Do not log in, contact anyone, or change anything.”
- Access needed: Web search or browser access. Start without account access.
- Inspect: Open the cited pages, check their dates and authority, and confirm that the summary accurately reflects them.
- Take control: Make decisions from the original sources, not a summary alone; do not treat an agent’s citations as proof that it read or interpreted a page correctly.
2. Turn meeting notes or a transcript into action items
Notes are often useful but hard to act on. An agent can sort a transcript or your notes into decisions, tasks, owners, and due dates, while flagging details that were never stated. Summarizing calls and working with documents are among the capabilities described by the UK Government report and OpenAI’s description of computer-using agents.
Try this prompt
“From these notes, list decisions and action items. Include an owner or deadline only when explicitly stated; otherwise write ‘not specified.’ Separate confirmed facts from questions to follow up. Do not message participants or create tasks.”

- Inspect: Compare names, owners, dates, and decisions against the original notes. Make sure questions have not been rewritten as commitments.
- Take control: Confirm action items with the people involved before creating tasks, assigning work, or circulating the summary.
3. Draft a routine email for you to review
A short follow-up, status update, or polite scheduling reply is a useful draft-only task. The agent can help with structure and tone; you remain responsible for whether the message is accurate and appropriate.
Try this prompt
“Draft a concise, friendly reply to this message. Use only the facts in my notes below. If a detail is missing, leave a bracketed question for me rather than guessing. Save as a draft; do not send.”
- Access needed: The source message and relevant facts. To create a draft in email, the agent also needs email access with draft permissions.
- Inspect: Check names, dates, attachments, promises, tone, and whether any private information is included unnecessarily.
- Take control: Send it yourself. Do not grant send permission just to avoid one final review.
4. Find possible meeting times from calendar constraints
This is my personal favorite because it removes the tedious part—finding overlaps—without requiring the agent to make the commitment. Give it the participants’ availability constraints and ask for candidate slots. If it has calendar access, it can inspect free/busy information; that does not mean it should send an invitation automatically. Anthropic describes this kind of permission boundary with a calendar example: “This means users can, for example, decide it’s always safe for Claude to read their calendar, but still require approval before sending someone an invitation.” The example appears in Anthropic’s *Trustworthy agents in practice*, published April 9, 2026.

“Find three 30-minute options next week that fit my available hours of [hours] and the constraints [time zone, participants, working hours]. Use free/busy information only. Do not create or send an invitation. Show the time zone for each option.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Access needed: Calendar read access, if checking availability directly. Otherwise, provide availability manually. Avoid exposing event titles when free/busy data is enough.
- Inspect: Verify the date, time zone, duration, and that every participant’s constraints are respected.
- Take control: Choose a slot and confirm it with participants. Keep approval required before the agent creates or sends an invitation.
5. Clean, normalize, or summarize a spreadsheet
Spreadsheets often need predictable housekeeping: consistent date formats, normalized category names, duplicate identification, or a quick summary of totals. An agent with access to the file can propose these changes or work on a copy. Spreadsheet handling is a documented capability category in the UK Government report.
Try this prompt
“Inspect this spreadsheet and report inconsistent date formats, likely duplicates, and blank cells in [columns]. Do not overwrite or delete data. Show proposed changes in a separate table and explain the rule used for each.”

- Inspect: Check a sample of flagged rows and verify that the proposed normalization preserves meaning, formulas, and identifiers.
- Take control: Keep the original unchanged and apply approved edits to a copy. Review any deletion or bulk replacement manually.
6. Prepare a first draft of a recurring document
For a recurring report, project update, or meeting brief, an agent can organize source notes under your usual headings and point out missing inputs. It is best used as a formatter and first-draft assistant, not as an authority on facts it cannot verify.
Try this prompt
“Create a first draft using this template and these source notes. Preserve the headings. Attribute each claim to the supplied source or mark it ‘needs confirmation.’ Do not invent results, dates, or commitments.”

- Inspect: Check figures, dates, names, conclusions, and any claim that lacks a source. Confirm that the template’s requirements are met.
- Take control: Approve the draft before sharing or filing it as final, especially if it contains decisions or sensitive information.
7. Navigate a simple web form or comparison workflow—then stop
A browser-capable agent may gather information from a site, compare options, or fill in non-sensitive fields. OpenAI describes computer use as a way to navigate websites and interact with browser interfaces to collect information or use an application in its article on computer-using agents. Keep the boundary clear: prepare the form or comparison, then stop before a consequential submission.
Try this prompt
“Compare the options shown on these pages using [criteria]. List the source page for each fact. If a form is needed, fill only the fields I specify and stop at the final review screen. Do not submit, purchase, or accept terms.”
- Access needed: Browser access to the relevant pages. Avoid giving credentials or sensitive personal data unless the task truly requires them and you understand the agent’s data handling.
- Inspect: Confirm that the agent used the correct pages, interpreted prices or terms accurately, and did not confuse a button or field.
- Take control: Review the completed form and the destination before submitting. Never let a general-purpose agent make an unreviewed purchase or binding submission.
Keep the first run small and reviewable
- Choose one repetitive task with a clear finish line and a result you can check.
- Describe the scope, allowed sources, output format, and actions the agent must not take.
- Start with read-only access or drafts. Add write permissions only if the task requires them.
- Review the result against the original data or source. For browser workflows, check the actual page state and activity rather than trusting a completion message.
- Require your confirmation before any message is sent, meeting is scheduled, form is submitted, purchase is made, or data is changed or deleted.
Do not read benchmark scores as a promise about your task. OpenAI reported 38.1% on OSWorld, 58.1% on WebArena, and 87.0% on WebVoyager for its evaluated system in 2025; those are system-specific results on benchmark tasks, not general success rates for agents today. OpenAI also noted that WebVoyager’s tasks were relatively simple and that performance on more complex WebArena tasks needed improvement. The figures and caveats are in OpenAI’s Computer-Using Agent article.
