Notebookcheck’s workload-specific findings
Notebookcheck described the iPhone XR as a strong, class-leading endurance performer in its review, while finding the Mate 20 Pro ahead in its battery-under-load test. That is not inherently inconsistent: a phone that excels in one use pattern can fall behind under a different, more demanding workload.
Manufacturer ratings are not review measurements

Why battery-life rankings vary
A runtime number is meaningful only alongside its workload and testing conditions. Web browsing, video playback, mixed use and sustained load place different demands on a phone. Screen size, resolution and settings also affect power draw; chipset and software efficiency matter, but no single factor explains a result by itself.

- Keep rated manufacturer duration separate from independent review measurements.
- Treat charging speed as a separate benefit from time unplugged. Android Authority’s coverage distinguished the Mate 20 Pro’s charging speed from the P20 Pro’s endurance award.
- Do not rank phones by battery capacity alone: capacity does not account for display behavior, hardware efficiency or the test being run.
How to choose among these 2018 contenders
If the question is which phone won a specific contemporary comparison, use the answer tied to that comparison: Android Authority’s battery-life award went to the P20 Pro, while PhoneArena’s reported test result was highest for the Mate 20 among the models in the figures above. Neither statement proves a universal winner across all 2018 phones.

For an individual choice, focus on the kind of use that matters to you. A video-streaming rating does not settle endurance during heavy workloads, and a load-test result does not predict every mixed-use day. The published evidence supports treating the XR, Note9 and Mate 20 Pro as relevant alternatives rather than assigning them a single cross-publication rank.
What to check before buying a 2018 phone today
These models date from 2018. Their current availability, condition, parts supply and repair practicality are not established by the period comparisons. For a used or refurbished handset, check the specific device’s battery condition and repair options rather than assuming its original endurance remains intact. A battery replacement may be relevant for an existing owner, but compatibility, part quality and repair difficulty need to be confirmed for the exact model.
