He has since sought another full-time role, but reporting by Moneycontrol says the search continued for nearly two years without an offer. Dev has turned to gig work and a fundraiser to help pay bills, while considering—but not announcing—a possible return to India.
Why Gautam Dev left his Dallas job
Dev said he was told he would have to move to another state to keep his software-engineering job. He chose to stay in Dallas and search for another position. Moneycontrol quoted him describing that choice as a disaster in hindsight. Moneycontrol’s account summarizes an interview with Business Insider; the underlying interview was not independently reviewed here.

His search has not produced a full-time offer
According to the account, Dev applied mainly through LinkedIn and reached out to professional acquaintances. He received interviews, including several rounds with one employer, but no full-time offer had followed by the time of the report.
Age, a job-search gap and AI are his concerns
Dev has speculated that his age and the gap since leaving his job could be working against him. He has also said he is unsure whether AI-engineering openings suit him because he lacks much of an AI background. These are his perceptions, not established explanations for employers’ decisions. The reporting does not provide evidence that age or AI-related changes caused the outcome, nor does it establish a broader hiring trend.

Gig work and donations are helping with bills
Dev said he began doing gig work through Uber, DoorDash and Walmart Spark. Moneycontrol reported that the earnings were lower than he had hoped and that his inability to carry heavy items limited some work. The account also says a fundraiser started in January raised more than $9,000, which Dev used to pay bills. The report does not provide a full breakdown of his finances or the fundraiser’s terms.
A return to India is a possibility, not a set plan
Dev has considered returning to India, where he lived before moving to the United States more than two decades ago. He has not set an immediate departure date and said arranging a move would take time. Hindustan Times reported that he expected to become eligible for Social Security at 62 in January 2027; that is his reported expectation, not an independently verified determination of his eligibility.

What the account does—and does not—establish
Dev’s story describes the consequences of one relocation decision and a prolonged, difficult job search. It does not establish why employers did not make an offer, how common this experience is among older workers, or whether AI hiring trends were a factor. The personal details and financial figures above are claims attributed to Dev or to the outlets reporting his account, rather than independently verified records.
