A VPN can hide your real IP address from other players, encrypt traffic on public Wi-Fi, and sometimes route you over a better path to a Warzone server. It is not a reliable way to lower ping, stop packet burst, or get into easier lobbies, and it can add latency. Activision’s published policy does not say whether VPNs are allowed or banned, so the account-risk question depends on how you use one.
This comparison covers six services: NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Surfshark, and Private Internet Access (PIA). The evidence is uneven. Provider pages are detailed for the first four, while Surfshark and PIA appear only in a recent independent location report without enough detail to compare them. We therefore do not rank the six. Instead, this guide explains what a VPN can change, where the claims stop, and how to test a service on your own connection.

What a VPN changes, and what it does not
A VPN sends your traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server operated by the provider. Warzone then sees the VPN server’s IP address rather than your home address. That is the part a VPN does reliably. The effects on game performance are less predictable:
Recommended Free Tools
- Hides your public IP from other players. Other players in a lobby see the VPN endpoint, not your home connection’s address.
- Encrypts traffic on untrusted networks. On public Wi-Fi, the tunnel protects data from the local network. It does not change your game server’s location.
- May improve a poor route. If your ISP routes traffic inefficiently to Activision’s game servers, a nearby VPN server can sometimes produce a shorter path. This depends on your ISP and region.
- Can add latency. NordVPN states plainly on its gaming page that a VPN may add latency. Every extra hop and encryption step costs time, and a distant server makes this worse.
- Does not choose your lobby. Matchmaking is based on the network conditions of your connection, not on the country shown for your VPN endpoint (see the matchmaking section below).
Can you get banned for using a VPN in Warzone?
The governing text is Activision’s Call of Duty Security and Enforcement Policy, last updated July 31, 2026. It prohibits:

“Utilizing any code and/or software not authorized by Activision that can be used in connection with the game and/or any component or feature thereof which changes and/or facilitates the gameplay or other activity, including to gain an unfair advantage, manipulate stats, and/or manipulate game data.”
The policy also states that sanctions can range up to license termination. The text as published does not mention VPNs by name. That means it does not establish a blanket rule that a VPN is prohibited, and it does not establish that a VPN is automatically safe. The concern it states is software that changes gameplay or gives an unfair advantage. Using a VPN for privacy or routing is not identified there as that kind of tool, but any tool used to manipulate gameplay falls under the policy.
Providers have their own positions. CyberGhost’s Warzone page says VPN use is allowed and does not violate the game’s Code of Conduct. That is the provider’s assertion, not Activision’s statement, and it does not bind enforcement decisions. If you want an authoritative answer for your own account, check the current policy in the Warzone support hub and contact Activision Support.

Does a VPN help with packet burst on PC?
Packet burst is a loss-and-retransmission pattern that can cause rubber-banding and freezes. ExpressVPN’s Warzone page says an optimal route may reduce packet burst in some cases, but it also says packet burst can have causes a VPN does not fix. Those causes include local network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, and problems on the ISP side.
In practice, a VPN is worth testing for packet burst only if your symptoms appear on a route that a nearby VPN server might bypass. If the problem follows you on a wired connection with no VPN, a VPN will not solve it. Check the basics first: wired Ethernet where possible, no bandwidth-heavy downloads on the same network, and a stable Wi-Fi band.
How to choose a VPN server location for Warzone
Server choice matters more than the provider’s logo. ExpressVPN advises selecting a server close to the game’s region or one with low latency and low congestion. Use this sequence to test a service on your own connection:
Rank #3
- New-Gen WiFi Standard – WiFi 6(802.11ax) standard supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology for better efficiency and throughput.Antenna : External antenna x 4. Processor : Dual-core (4 VPE). Power Supply : AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz), DC Output : 12 V with max. 1.5A current.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
- Measure your baseline first. Play a few matches without a VPN and note in-game latency, packet loss if your game or router shows it, and any stutter or rubber-banding.
- Connect to the VPN server closest to your physical location that is listed for your region.
- Launch Warzone and check latency and stability over several matches, not one. Compare the same time of day with your baseline.
- Try one or two other nearby servers from the same provider. Keep the server that gives the most consistent result, not the one with the lowest number in a single match.
- If performance is worse, disconnect and keep the ordinary connection. A VPN that makes your ping higher has no gaming benefit for your setup.
How to set up a VPN for Warzone on PC
- Install the provider’s desktop application from its official website and sign in.
- Choose the server location you tested in the previous section.
- Connect, and confirm the app shows a connected state before launching the game.
- Launch Warzone and run your baseline comparison.
- If you use a kill switch or split-tunnel feature in the app, check its settings before relying on it, because the menu names vary by provider and version.
Using a VPN with PS5 and Xbox
Consoles cannot run most VPN apps directly, so the setup moves to another device. Two methods appear in the provider material reviewed here.
Sharing a connection from a PC on PS5
ExpressVPN describes installing its service on a PC and sharing that connection with the PS5 using a Wi-Fi hotspot or an Ethernet cable. The PC becomes the VPN-connected gateway. Expect the same trade-offs as on PC: the extra hop can add latency, and the PC must stay connected throughout your session. Ethernet is generally more stable than a hotspot, but either method depends on the PC’s own connection quality.
Running the VPN on a compatible router
CyberGhost describes configuring its service on compatible routers for PlayStation or Xbox, and NordVPN’s gaming guidance also makes router compatibility a practical consideration. A router-level VPN puts every device on the network through the tunnel, which is convenient for consoles but means you need a router that supports the provider’s protocol and setup method. Confirm compatibility with the provider’s current list before buying hardware.

The six services compared
The table below lists only what the provider pages or independent reporting state. Where a figure or detail is not established, the table says so. Figures from provider pages are marketing claims unless noted otherwise, and none of them is a measured Warzone result.
| Service | Server and gaming claims (provider-stated unless noted) | Console approach | Warzone-specific independent evidence | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | Advises choosing a server near Activision’s game servers; 30-day money-back guarantee for new users per its Warzone page, with terms to be confirmed | PS5 via PC hotspot or Ethernet sharing | None established in the sources reviewed | Not established in this review; check the provider’s pricing page |
| CyberGhost | Servers in 100 countries (undated provider page, accessed 2026); dedicated gaming servers | Compatible-router setup for PlayStation or Xbox | None established in the sources reviewed | Not established in this review; check the provider’s pricing page |
| NordVPN | Gaming page discusses protocol choice and notes VPNs may add latency; performance figures are provider-reported | Router compatibility guidance | None established; figures are not independently validated for Warzone | Not established in this review; check the provider’s pricing page |
| Proton VPN | Network of 20,000 servers, unlimited bandwidth, VPN Accelerator, AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption (gaming page, accessed 2026) | Not stated on the gaming page reviewed | Included in a September 30, 2026 location test; no Warzone performance figures reported in the extract | Not established in this review; check the provider’s pricing page |
| Surfshark | Feature details not established | Not established | Included in a September 30, 2026 location test; no detailed results available | Not established in this review; check the provider’s pricing page |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Feature details not established | Not established | Included in a September 30, 2026 location test; no detailed results available | Not established in this review; check the provider’s pricing page |
Why Surfshark and PIA are not ranked
Surfshark and PIA were among the five providers in a September 30, 2026 Gizmodo report on Warzone location testing. That report, however, does not give enough detail to say how either service performed, what protocols or plans it offers, or whether it supports consoles. Without those details, any ranking or claimed strength would be guesswork. Check each provider’s current feature list directly before making a choice.

Many VPN pages and articles promise that connecting to a particular country will put you in an easier lobby. The independent location report does not support that. Gizmodo’s September 30, 2026 report says Call of Duty matchmaking puts the most weight on ping. In its October tests, Egypt, Kenya, and Cambodia had no physical server for the five named providers, and the test endpoints were routed through other cities.
Best Value
- 【Rapid OpenVPN & Wireguard speed】Wireguard VPN and OpenVPN speeds both up to 680Mbps, giving you complete control over your gaming, streaming and working bandwidth. Actual speed may differ depending on internet service provider, network environment, VPN server location, VPN service provider, etc.
- 【AdGuard Home Supported】Enabling the use of a DNS server for blocking unwanted tracking and offers a convenient web interface for filtering selected digital advertisements. Users can take full control of their online experience and enjoy a clutter-free browsing environment with ease.
- 【Mass device connectivity】Experience enhanced online connectivity with our higher storage capacity, catering to over a hundred devices and fulfilling the requirements of DIY users seeking to install additional plugins. Enjoy stable and reliable connections, ensuring seamless performance and accommodating a wide range of digital needs.
- 【Easy Setup】Follow the Initial Set-up video tutorial on Amazon or Connect BE9300 to your computer via Ethernet cable to access the web Admin Panel, easy connect to wireless internet.
- 【MLO Technology】Flint 3 represents the future of wireless technology, delivering ultra-fast speeds, significantly reduced latency, and improved connectivity in high-density environments through cutting-edge innovations like Multi-Link Operation (MLO), enhanced OFDMA, 4K QAM, and preamble puncturing.
The practical result: a VPN endpoint’s advertised country does not tell you which lobby you will be matched into. Choose a server by measured latency and stability for your own connection, not by the country it claims to be in.
Who should use a VPN for Warzone
- Worth testing: you have a known routing problem to a specific game region, or you want encryption on untrusted networks and are willing to measure any latency change.
- Worth testing with caution: you are on a console and can dedicate a PC or a compatible router to the VPN, and you accept that the added hop may increase latency.
- Not a fix for: local Wi-Fi interference, a congested home network, or a wired connection with poor ISP quality that a VPN does not change.
- Not a matchmaking tool: do not expect a particular country to produce a particular lobby.
Hardware considerations for console VPN setups
For PlayStation or Xbox owners who want the VPN on every device, a VPN-compatible Wi-Fi router is the main hardware decision. Check the provider’s current list of supported routers and setup methods before you buy, because compatibility depends on the router’s firmware, protocol support, and the provider’s configuration instructions. A PC with an Ethernet connection to the console is an alternative that needs no new router.
