But it did not launch six new Gemini Live features: camera and screen sharing were the clearest capabilities made available to users, while most of the more ambitious behaviors were research demonstrations or future product directions.
Here are six useful ways to group what Google showed, plus what the company actually said was coming next. Project Astra is Google DeepMind’s research prototype—not a standalone app you can download. Google described its work as informing products such as Gemini Live and Search, as well as developer tools and future Android XR devices. (Google DeepMind)

1. Live camera and screen understanding
This is the most concrete item in the roundup. Google said Gemini Live’s camera and screen-sharing capabilities were being made available to everyone, including iOS users, at I/O 2025. That announcement concerned these sharing features; it did not make the rest of the Astra demonstration generally available. (Google I/O keynote)
With camera sharing, a user can show Gemini Live something in the surroundings and ask questions about it. Screen sharing lets the assistant respond to what is displayed on the phone. Google’s announcement described free access, but it does not establish unlimited use or identical availability across every platform and account. Current Gemini plan information also notes that limits can depend on the feature used, prompt complexity and conversation length, and that mobile and web experiences may differ. (Google AI plans)

Before sharing
- Check the camera view for people, documents, addresses or other sensitive details.
- Close private apps and consider turning off notifications before sharing your screen; passwords, messages, financial details and authentication codes could otherwise become visible.
- If the camera answer matters, improve the lighting, reduce glare and verify the object yourself. Visual identification can be wrong.
2. Web research and document navigation
In the bicycle-repair scenario, Astra searched for a bike manual and navigated to the section about the brakes while the user spoke with it. That is more than answering from a static prompt: the prototype demonstrated finding and moving through relevant information during a live conversation.
This manual-search behavior was shown as part of the demonstration, not announced as a generally available Gemini Live feature. If you use an assistant for a repair, give it the manufacturer, model and exact part number where possible, then check that the manual and instructions match your equipment. A search result can be for a similar but incompatible model. The demo and Google’s subsequent clarification about the specific features’ rollout status were reported by BGR.
3. Finding an instructional video
The assistant also found a YouTube video about repairing a stripped screw. In practice, that kind of video discovery could be useful when a repair is easier to follow visually than through written instructions. But finding a relevant-looking clip is not the same as confirming that its tools, procedure or part match the user’s exact situation.
This was another behavior in the bicycle demo, not a separate product launch. Check the video’s model and repair context before following instructions, especially where a mistake could damage equipment or create a safety risk.
4. Combining camera input with Google-service context
Astra’s demonstration combined what the camera saw in the garage with information from Gmail. It used that context to identify a likely bicycle part in the live view. The idea is to answer a question using both the present scene and related information, rather than treating an image or an email as an isolated prompt.
Google did not announce general Gemini Live availability for this Gmail-plus-camera workflow or the demo’s object identification and highlighting. Nor does the demonstration establish automatic access to a user’s entire Google account. Before relying on a result, open the relevant email yourself and confirm the part or product details; an assistant can misread a message or mistake one object for another.
5. Calling a business in the background
During the demo, Astra called a nearby bike shop while continuing to interact with the user, then reported what it learned. This illustrated a possible agentic assistant: one that can take a step on the user’s behalf instead of only giving instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGoogle did not confirm this as a generally available calling feature or provide a rollout timetable for the specific behavior. A real calling assistant would need clear authorization, and users should know what information it will share with a business. Do not treat the demo as evidence that Gemini Live can currently place calls for you. (BGR’s report and clarification)
6. Maintaining context and suggesting next actions
The scenario showed Astra keeping track of the bicycle conversation after an interruption, handling another speaker, and using the broader context to recommend a dog basket. It then offered a possible pickup-order action. These belong together as a picture of persistent, context-aware assistance—not as several separately launched features.

The purchase flow was not shown operating as a released service, and the report noted it may have involved Project Mariner. Google’s official description did say Astra’s memory had improved, but it did not establish unlimited or permanent memory, the exact retention model or the user controls for every prototype behavior. (Google DeepMind; BGR)
Memory and context can make an assistant more useful, but they also raise questions about what it remembers, how accurately it interprets a conversation and what data it uses. Treat product suggestions as suggestions: confirm dimensions, compatibility, price and seller, and require a clear confirmation step before any order or other consequential action.

What Google officially announced beyond the bicycle demo
Google’s I/O roundup described Project Astra research updates and possible destinations for the work. It highlighted more natural voice output using native audio, improved memory and computer control. Google said Astra’s capabilities would inform Gemini Live, new Search experiences, the Live API for developers and future Android XR products, including glasses. These were research directions and integrations, not a promise that every demo behavior would arrive in each product. (Google’s I/O 2025 announcements)
Search Live
Google described a coming Search experience in AI Mode that would let people talk back and forth with Search about what their camera sees in real time. Search Live is a Search/AI Mode experience, not another name for Gemini Live or Project Astra itself. The announcement did not equate it with the full bicycle-repair demo. (Google’s I/O 2025 announcements)
Computer control
Computer control was part of Astra’s research direction: an assistant interacting with software and interfaces on a user’s behalf. The reviewed announcement does not establish a general consumer release, supported operating systems, exact controls or a universal feature for controlling a phone or computer.
Accessibility and tutoring
Google also described an Astra-related accessibility prototype developed with Aira to assist blind and low-vision users with everyday tasks. Separately, it presented a conversational homework tutor that can follow a problem, explain it step by step, identify mistakes and generate diagrams. These announcements broadened the picture of Google’s work, but they are not additional features shown in the bicycle scenario. (Google’s I/O 2025 announcements)
What is available, and what remains a demo?
The six headings above group related actions from the bicycle scenario; they are not six separate product launches. The table separates the clearest user-facing availability from research demonstrations and future directions.
| Capability | Status at the I/O 2025 announcement |

What the demo means for Gemini users
If you want to try the most clearly announced Astra-derived capability, start with Gemini Live camera or screen sharing, subject to your platform, account, app permissions and rollout status. The demo’s manual navigation, Gmail grounding, background calls, persistent multi-speaker context and shopping action should instead be understood as prototypes or future directions unless Google separately confirms their availability.
The distinction matters: a research demonstration can show what a system may be able to do without establishing that the same behavior is reliable, safe, supported or ready for everyday use. For camera and screen sharing, inspect what you are exposing; for any repair, purchase or action involving another person, independently verify the assistant’s interpretation and keep control of the final decision.
