6 Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Characters Who Should Be in the Next Smash Bros. Game

Eshmel, Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, Leda, and Sothis are the six Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave characters with the strongest cases for a future Super Smash Bros. roster. This is informed fan advocacy, not a Nintendo announcement: Nintendo has not confirmed the next Smash game or any Fortune’s Weave fighter.

Fortune’s Weave launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17, 2026. Its time-spanning story follows four protagonists and their allies on Dagda, south of Fódlan, as they ultimately unite against the demon god Balor. That structure gives Nintendo several potential fighters who could represent more than another conventional sword user.

Why Fortune’s Weave deserves a Smash representative

Nintendo presents Fortune’s Weave as a grid-based, turn-based strategy game in which players guide four heroes through parallel paths, switch between perspectives, recruit allies, and converge on a common enemy. The cast therefore covers ordinary heroes, rulers, performers, and divine figures rather than a single army built around one weapon type.

The recommendations below use five editorial tests: whether a character could have a distinctive moveset, how central the character is to the story, visual recognizability, representation of the game’s four-path and gods-versus-heroes premise, and whether the fighter would add something beyond existing Fire Emblem characters in Smash.

Character Moveset potential Story and visual identity What the fighter adds
Eshmel Time-travel-focused design; exact weapon loadout is not established Main hero tied to Fortuna and Sothis The clearest embodiment of the game’s central premise
Cai Bo staff and gem-powered ranged attack Young hero from Ribeira rescuing his father A staff-centered fighter with a natural projectile
Dietrich Fast, close-range sword pressure Ruthless monster survivor and stronger-foe hunter Only works if his mechanics separate him from existing sword fighters
Theodora Large-spear spacing and defensive control Queen and guardian of Saramis A mature ruler and prominent lance user
Leda Agile performance, rhythm, and enchantment concepts Dancer and musician pursuing revenge A non-sword, movement-driven identity
Sothis Giant-axe power with mythic effects Progenitor God who launches the quest A divine heavyweight linked to time and creation

Which Fortune’s Weave characters should be in Smash?

Eshmel: the cleanest face of the game

Nintendo Life describes Eshmel as “A true hero born to shed light upon the world.” He travels to the past with Fortuna at Sothis’s request to gather allies and defeat Balor. That makes him the most direct representation of the player-facing time-travel premise and the strongest all-purpose protagonist choice.

A Smash version should make time manipulation the organizing idea rather than assign him an unverified signature weapon. For example, an editorial concept could let a special briefly rewind Eshmel’s position or alter the timing of an attack, with clear limits to prevent an invincible or endlessly reversible fighter. His final attack could unite the four paths against Balor. Those are design proposals, not an established in-game loadout; the available character material confirms his role and journey, not a complete moveset.

Cai: a staff fighter with a personal rescue mission

Nintendo calls Cai “A young boy determined to save his father from imprisonment.” The Direct presentation places him in Ribeira, where he enters the Heroic Games to rescue his father. Official screenshots show him using a bo staff and firing a gem-powered blast, giving him an immediately readable combination of reach and ranged energy.

That combination would help Cai avoid the usual swordfighter template. His staff could control space with sweeping arcs and vaulting attacks, while the gem blast supplies a chargeable projectile. A recovery based on a staff-assisted leap would fit the visual language without claiming a specific command input that Nintendo has not published.

Dietrich: the risky but valuable swordsman

Dietrich is “A ruthless swordman ever on the hunt for a stronger foe,” according to Nintendo. The Direct describes him as a warrior who joins the Heroic Games after surviving an attack by an enormous monster. His motivation naturally supports an aggressive, close-range fighter.

He is also the hardest recommendation to justify mechanically because Smash already has several sword users from Fire Emblem. Dietrich would need a deliberate distinction: unusually strong forward pressure, attacks that reward challenging powerful opponents, or a risk-and-reward system tied to his hunt for stronger foes. Simply giving him another fast sword and standard counter would make his inclusion feel interchangeable.

Theodora: a queen who brings the lance to center stage

Nintendo identifies Theodora as “A queen seeking to fulfill the long-held dream of her homeland.” She leads Saramis, defends its peace, and honors its goddess. Official imagery shows her wielding a large spear, giving the roster a prominent lance user and a mature ruler rather than another youthful swordsman.

A Theodora concept could emphasize measured spacing: long spear pokes, sweeping anti-air attacks, and planted defensive moves that reward holding ground. Her royal identity also offers presentation opportunities, such as command animations or a ceremonial visual finish, while keeping the core fighter focused on reach and control.

Leda: the performance-based wildcard

Nintendo describes Leda as “A talented musician with her sights set on taking her revenge.” The Direct says she enters the Heroic Games after learning that her father’s killer is competing. Nintendo Life further identifies her as a dancer who plays enchanting music and avoids counterattacks with grace.

Leda could be the roster’s most original movement specialist. An editorial moveset might build short musical phrases into attacks, changing a note pattern to alter knockback or movement, while dance steps provide evasive repositioning. Those mechanics would express her musician-and-dancer identity without turning the proposal into a claim about confirmed abilities. Her revenge story supplies emotional focus, and her performance theme fills a gap in the current Fire Emblem lineup.

Sothis: the mythic heavyweight

Nintendo calls Sothis “The Progenitor God who sets you and Fortuna on a quest to save the world.” The official gallery depicts her holding a giant battle axe. She is therefore the strongest mythic candidate: a divine figure with a clear weapon silhouette and a direct connection to the time-traveling plot.

In Smash, Sothis could combine heavyweight axe impact with restrained reality- or time-themed effects. A brief temporal pause, a delayed strike, or a summoning animation could distinguish her from ordinary axe users, provided the design remains readable and balanced. Her inclusion would also represent the god side of Fortune’s Weave’s heroes-versus-divinity conflict.

Who is the best Fortune’s Weave fighter for Smash?

If Nintendo wanted one representative, Eshmel has the best overall case because he connects the player to the four-path structure, Fortuna, Sothis, and the mission against Balor. Cai is the strongest alternative for pure gameplay distinctiveness: a staff-and-gem fighter would immediately look different from the existing roster.

Sothis is the best choice for mythic impact, Theodora for a lance-centered royal identity, and Leda for the most unconventional mechanics. Dietrich has a compelling personality and action profile, but he requires the most careful design work to avoid duplicating established Fire Emblem swordsmen.

How the six could represent Fortune’s Weave’s wider cast

The game’s post-launch expansion gives Nintendo even more characters to draw from, but additional content is not evidence of a Smash selection. Wave 1 of the Expansion Pass added prototype weapons modeled after Three Houses Heroes’ Relics on October 14, 2026. Wave 2 is scheduled for holiday 2026 and adds the gods Aurora, Smyrnos, and Jurah alongside outfits. Wave 3 is planned for 2027 with stories featuring Bertrand, Talimun, Orchel, and Anatolia, plus new allies and classes.

Those additions can strengthen the case that Fortune’s Weave has a broad, recognizable universe, but none of the DLC characters is confirmed for Smash. The six recommendations above remain the clearest spread of protagonists, combat styles, rulers, performers, and gods.
