For most visitor-submission workflows, start with a form builder such as WPForms; choose a more specialized option when you need extra file types, multiple uploads, or permission controls.
This guide compares six options across two different roundups: WPBeginner’s January 15, 2026 article lists seven plugins despite its “6 Best” title, while WPForms’ vendor-published comparison lists eight. They are useful shortlists, not a single standardized test; WPForms’ comparison is not independent testing. The right choice comes down to your upload workflow, file safety, storage, and server limits.
How can visitors upload files to my WordPress site?
A frontend form can collect files alongside information such as a name, email address, application, or support request. Visitors can submit resumes, photos, quotations, and other documents without receiving WordPress dashboard accounts. Choose a plugin that fits the whole workflow: who may upload, which files are accepted, where uploads go, and who can retrieve them.
Which file upload plugin fits your workflow?
1. WPForms: general-purpose upload forms
WPForms is a practical starting point for contact, application, or request forms that need an upload field. Its documentation describes adding the field in a drag-and-drop builder. Files go to a WPForms uploads folder by default, with optional Media Library or connected cloud storage choices. Administrators can restrict access by WordPress user or password. Check the current plan details to confirm the features you need are included. WPForms’ file upload field guide

2. File Upload Types by WPForms: accepting additional file formats
Use this plugin when a form needs file extensions or MIME types beyond the usual safe types. Allow only formats required for the workflow: accepting additional types widens what users can submit and can increase security risk. WordPress.org’s plugin listing
3. Formidable Forms: advanced forms and multiple uploads
Formidable Forms is positioned as an advanced-form option. The WPForms comparison specifically identifies support for multiple-file uploads, which can suit submissions where one visitor needs to attach several items. Confirm current plan requirements and the exact field behavior before building around it. WPForms’ file upload plugin comparison

4. WordPress File Upload: direct frontend submissions
This option is aimed at letting visitors upload files from the frontend, including placements such as a post or sidebar described in WPBeginner’s comparison. It is worth considering when the upload itself—not a more elaborate application or contact form—is the main interaction. WPBeginner’s file upload plugin comparison
5. MemberPress: uploads tied to restricted permissions
MemberPress is the more relevant fit when access control for members is central to the workflow. That is a different need from collecting an attachment in a public contact form: decide whether uploads must be limited by membership or other permissions before choosing it. 6. Easy Digital Downloads: selling downloadable files
Easy Digital Downloads addresses a related but distinct job: selling downloadable products. It is not a direct substitute for a visitor-submission form. Choose it when buyers should purchase and download digital files rather than send files to your site. WPBeginner’s file upload plugin comparison

What to check before choosing
- Workflow: distinguish visitor form submissions from member uploads, file management, and sales of downloadable products.
- File types: verify the allowed extensions and MIME types. If you enable extra types, keep the allowlist as narrow as practical.
- Number of files: check whether the field accepts one file or multiple files, and whether that capability is in the plan you intend to use.
- Upload size: the plugin cannot exceed the server’s configured maximum. WPForms says chunked uploads do not remove the host’s limit; check the hosting configuration as well as the plugin settings. WPForms’ file upload field guide
- Storage and access: find out where submissions are stored, who can access them, and how long they are retained. This matters especially for resumes, support documents, and other sensitive files.
- Compatibility: confirm that the plugin works with the form, storage, and other integrations your site relies on. Gravity Forms, for example, documents that custom plugins offloading the uploads directory to external services such as Amazon S3 are not officially supported and can cause uploads not to work as expected. It also checks a file’s actual type against its extension unless the relevant whitelist check is disabled. Gravity Forms file upload documentation
- Plan and price: feature tiers and prices in comparison articles can change. Check the vendor’s current plan page before purchasing; the two roundups differ in scope and do not establish a single current price comparison.
How to choose among the six
| Option | Best fit described by the comparisons | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| WPForms | General-purpose file upload forms | Current plan eligibility, access controls, and storage choice |
| File Upload Types by WPForms | Allowing additional file extensions or MIME types | Required formats and a suitably narrow allowlist |
| Formidable Forms | Advanced forms; multiple uploads noted by WPForms | Current plan and multi-file field behavior |
| WordPress File Upload | Direct frontend uploads | Placement and submission workflow |
| MemberPress | Uploads where restricted permissions matter | Whether member access control is the central requirement |
| Easy Digital Downloads | Selling downloadable files | Whether the goal is digital commerce rather than collecting uploads |
Set up uploads safely
- Accept only the file types your workflow needs; a familiar filename extension alone is not a reason to allow a format.
- Limit access to submitted files, particularly when they contain personal or confidential information, and choose storage and retention practices deliberately.
- Test the form with the largest expected file and each permitted format. If an upload fails, check both the plugin’s limits and the server’s configured maximum.
- Recheck plan requirements, integrations, and plugin compatibility before launch, especially if files are offloaded or stored outside the default location.
