A 5G hotspot is the practical choice for internet on the move, or as temporary or backup access, when cellular coverage and your plan support it. For regular home internet, compare the fixed services available at your address with the hotspot plan’s full-speed data, price, and limits. The key distinction: 5G is a cellular connection to the internet; Wi-Fi is the local wireless link your devices can use to connect to a router or to the hotspot itself.
First, separate the internet connection from Wi-Fi
A 5G hotspot—whether it is a phone sharing its connection or a dedicated portable device—gets internet over a cellular network and typically shares that connection with nearby devices over Wi-Fi. A home router also provides Wi-Fi, but its internet connection may come from fiber, cable, fixed wireless, or another service. So “5G hotspot versus Wi-Fi” is not a direct technology-versus-technology comparison: the real choice is usually cellular internet through a hotspot versus the internet services available at home.

Which option fits your situation?
| Your need | Likely fit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Internet while traveling or away from a fixed address | A 5G hotspot, if coverage and plan terms allow it | Coverage in the places you will use it, hotspot data allowance, device compatibility, and how many devices need to connect. |
| Regular household internet | Compare fixed services available at your address first; a hotspot may suit light or temporary use | Address-level availability, advertised speeds, household usage, hotspot limits, and total service terms. |
| Backup internet | A hotspot can help if the primary service is unavailable and cellular service remains usable | Whether the backup depends on a different underlying network, whether its plan has enough hotspot data, and whether the device will stay charged. A cellular connection alone does not establish that it will be independent of a particular outage. |
| Several devices or a group | A dedicated hotspot may be more suitable than phone tethering, depending on its capacity and your use | The model’s supported device count and the carrier plan. AT&T notes that supported counts vary and that more connected devices may affect each device’s speed. |
Is a 5G hotspot faster than Wi-Fi?
There is no universal speed winner. Performance depends on location, network conditions, service, and equipment. A 5G badge does not guarantee a particular speed, and Wi-Fi describes only the local wireless connection—not the speed or quality of the internet service feeding it.

The Federal Communications Commission’s 2024 Communications Marketplace Report gives historical U.S. context: mean 5G download speeds of 173.3–276.1 Mbps and median speeds of 113.6–230.4 Mbps for three nationwide providers, using second-half 2023 data. The FCC said those speeds were comparable to fixed broadband in parts of the country but well below speeds available in many locations. These are network-level figures from that period, not a current speed promise or a controlled comparison of a specific hotspot with a specific Wi-Fi router. See FCC 24-136.
A 2020 research paper comparing 5G and Wi-Fi 6 described wide-area coverage as a 5G strength and indoor use as a Wi-Fi 6 strength, while noting Wi-Fi’s lower deployment cost. That is a broad technical conclusion, not evidence that Wi-Fi is faster or better in every home. Read “Revisiting Wireless Internet Connectivity: 5G vs Wi-Fi 6”.

Is a 5G hotspot good for home internet?
It can work for a household, especially for light or temporary use, but suitability depends on the service available at the address, cellular conditions, household demand, and plan terms. Check fixed options as well as mobile hotspot service rather than assuming that a cellular connection is automatically cheaper, faster, or unlimited. The FCC reports that mobile plans with smartphone hotspot access may require a higher-priced plan or limit hotspot data or speed; fixed wireless pricing and offers vary by location and advertised speed.
Use the FCC National Broadband Map to compare reported fixed and mobile broadband availability. It can help narrow the options, but it does not predict the performance you will experience at a particular moment or inside your home.

What plan terms and costs should you compare?
Do not rely on the word “unlimited” or the 5G label alone. Compare the complete service terms and recurring cost for your location.
- Monthly service cost, including taxes and any equipment charges.
- Hotspot data available at full speed, and what happens after that allowance—such as reduced speed or prioritization.
- Whether hotspot use requires a particular mobile plan or carries separate limits.
- Service availability at your home address and the places where you expect to use a portable hotspot.
- Whether the advertised service and speeds fit the number of people and devices using it.
Availability, plan eligibility, and offers change by provider and location. Check the current provider terms for your address before committing.

What to check in a dedicated hotspot
A dedicated device may be worth considering when portability or connecting several devices matters. Its Wi-Fi capability is only one part of the decision: it also needs compatible cellular support and a suitable service plan. T-Mobile’s device guide lists the Franklin JEXtream RG3100 5G and Inseego MiFi PRO M4 as examples and suggests comparing network support, Wi-Fi generation, supported device count, ports, management features, and battery life. It is a carrier guide, not independent product testing; stock, compatibility, pricing, and plan eligibility can change.

How to decide at your address
- Use the FCC National Broadband Map to identify reported fixed and mobile options for your address.
- For home service, compare available fixed offerings with the mobile hotspot plan, including full-speed hotspot data, potential speed changes after an allowance, recurring costs, and equipment charges.
- For travel or backup, check cellular coverage where you will actually use the hotspot and confirm the plan permits enough hotspot data for your needs.
- If choosing a dedicated device, verify carrier compatibility, supported device count, Wi-Fi features, ports, and battery life against your intended use.
