It depends on what you are comparing. 5G is a cellular network that can bring internet service to a home; Wi-Fi is typically the short-range wireless connection between the home router or gateway and your devices. A 5G home internet setup often uses both: cellular for the provider-to-home connection, then Wi-Fi inside the home. The useful comparison is how a specific service and home network perform at your address—not whether one technology is always faster.
What 5G and Wi-Fi do in a home
They operate at different points in the connection. With 5G home internet, a gateway receives a cellular signal from the provider and usually shares the connection with phones, laptops, TVs, and other devices over Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi can also distribute internet that arrives through another type of fixed broadband connection.

So a phone showing a strong 5G speed test does not prove that a home’s Wi-Fi is slow, or that a 5G home internet plan would outperform the household’s current service. The phone may be using its cellular connection directly, bypassing the home router entirely.

What the available U.S. speed figures show—and do not show
The FCC’s 2024 Communications Marketplace Report provides a useful sense of scale, but its figures are not a controlled, same-period head-to-head test. For the three nationwide providers, FCC-reported 5G download speeds in the second half of 2023 ranged from 173.3 to 276.1 Mbps for the mean and 113.6 to 230.4 Mbps for the median. The same report cites a weighted mean advertised fixed-broadband download speed of 467 Mbps across twelve participating ISPs for September–October 2022. That figure is an advertised-speed measure from an earlier period, not a measured result directly comparable to the 2023 5G figures. Neither set of numbers predicts the speed a particular household will experience.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Availability and advertised speeds: The FCC National Broadband Map shows reported fixed providers, technologies, and maximum advertised speeds at a selected location. A maximum advertised speed is not a guarantee of the speed your devices will receive. Check the FCC National Broadband Map.
- Measured performance at different times: Speeds can vary by time and conditions. Compare results from the same device and test method, including busy periods when your household typically uses the internet.
- Upload speed and latency: Download speed alone may not answer whether a connection suits video calls, gaming, or sending large files. Check the provider’s current terms and, where possible, test those activities on the connection.
- Indoor 5G reception: A mobile coverage map is not an indoor-performance guarantee. The FCC says its mobile coverage areas represent expected service outdoors or in a moving vehicle and do not show indoor coverage. See the FCC map guidance.
- Usage terms and price: Check current service terms for your address, including any data or usage conditions and the monthly price after promotional periods. Those details can vary and change.
- Wi-Fi where you use it: A fast connection at the gateway will not help much if the signal is weak in the rooms or on the devices that matter to you.
Why Wi-Fi may seem slower than 5G
A speed test on a phone connected directly to cellular 5G measures a different path from one on the same phone connected to home Wi-Fi. A slow Wi-Fi result may come from the router or device, the wireless signal’s path through the home, or another bottleneck—not necessarily the provider connection. The FCC identifies equipment condition, connected devices, in-home signal propagation, and bottlenecks beyond the household as factors that can affect test results. Read the FCC Broadband Speed Guide.

To narrow down the cause, compare a test near the router with one in the room where the connection feels slow. If practical, also test a computer connected to the gateway by Ethernet. Keep the device and test method consistent. If a wired or near-router result is substantially better than the distant-room result, the in-home Wi-Fi link is a likely place to investigate; if both are slow, the issue may be elsewhere in the connection. These comparisons help locate a bottleneck but do not identify its cause with certainty.

- Model G5AR-1 Official T-Mobile gateway device
- Dual-Band WiFi Support Provides reliable wireless connections for multiple devices simultaneously
- Wi-Fi 7
- Wide Device Compatibility Works with PCs, smart TVs, smartphones, gaming consoles, and smart home devices
What to do if the bottleneck is inside your home
First check whether moving closer to the gateway improves the connection, and whether the slowdown affects one device or several. If only one device is slow, its condition or capabilities may matter. If performance drops mainly in distant rooms, placement, walls, or the home’s Wi-Fi setup may be limiting coverage.
A Wi-Fi 6 router may be relevant when the problem is in-home wireless coverage or capacity, but it does not strengthen a provider’s 5G signal or increase the speed delivered by the internet service. Whether new equipment helps depends on the existing gateway, home layout, device support, and service setup. Check compatibility before replacing or adding equipment.

Is 5G home internet faster than Wi-Fi?
That question mixes a type of internet service with a way to connect devices to a home network. 5G home internet can be faster or slower than another provider’s service at a particular address, while Wi-Fi performance depends on the gateway, device, and location inside the home. Compare address-specific service options and test the connection where you use it; the technology names alone do not establish a winner.
