Does 5G drain your battery faster? Sometimes, but not always. Battery impact changes with the phone, radio conditions, carrier configuration and what you are doing. A 5G radio can draw more power at a given moment, yet finish a large download sooner and use less energy for the completed task. In other situations, a phone that keeps 5G and LTE active together can consume more power.
The evidence does not support one battery-loss percentage for every handset. The useful question is not “Is 5G bad for batteries?” but “What network setup and workload does my phone have right now?”

What the evidence actually says
Two frequently cited test programs illustrate why blanket claims fail. A 2019 benchmark commissioned by Qualcomm and conducted by Signals Research Group tested commercially available 5G phones in several countries. Its results changed with radio conditions, network behavior and workload. A separate 2023 Signals Research Group report tested a Galaxy S22 under specific standalone, non-standalone and carrier-aggregation configurations. Neither is a current ranking of every phone, carrier or market.

Qualcomm’s summary of the 2019 commissioned study says that “the impact on battery life is very nuanced and complex between the two technologies” and that 5G smartphones can deliver all-day battery life. That is a summary of a particular 2019 study, not a promise about every current device. You can read the summary at Qualcomm and the underlying report at Signals Research Group’s report.

Myth 1: 5G always drains more battery than 4G
Why the result changes
Battery drain is the outcome of radio power, time spent transmitting, signal quality and the phone’s modem software. A weak or variable signal can make any cellular technology work harder. In a strong 5G signal, the phone may move data quickly enough that the radio is active for less time. In another location, maintaining a 5G connection or searching between layers can outweigh that time saving.
The 2019 benchmark found this conditional behavior rather than a fixed rule. Its measurements varied with radio conditions and use. Good conditions could allow 5G’s faster transfer to offset higher instantaneous current. That does not mean 5G will save battery in every strong-signal situation; it means “always worse” is not supported by the test.
What you should infer from your own phone
Look for patterns instead of assuming a percentage. If the battery falls quickly while the phone is in a marginal 5G area, switching temporarily to LTE may help because the handset is no longer trying to hold an unstable 5G connection. If the same phone completes large downloads rapidly on a strong 5G signal, the total energy used for each download may be similar to or lower than LTE. These are workload-specific observations, not a universal ranking.

Myth 2: Faster 5G speed automatically means more energy for the same task
Instantaneous power is not energy per task
“Power” describes the rate at which the phone is using energy at a moment; “energy per task” includes how long the task lasts. A 5G modem can draw more current while transmitting but finish a 2 GB download in substantially less time. The relevant battery question is how much energy the complete download consumed, not only the peak current shown during transmission.
The Qualcomm account of the 2019 benchmark reports that 5G could be more energy-efficient than LTE for large data transfers when radio conditions were good. The same report found cases in which LTE performed better, including situations where data speed was throttled. A slow 5G connection can therefore lose the time advantage that made its higher instantaneous draw worthwhile.
Why everyday tasks may show little difference
Web pages, messages and short app requests often involve brief bursts of data separated by idle time. Their battery impact can be dominated by the display, processor, background synchronization or poor reception rather than by a single transfer. A sustained download, cloud backup or high-resolution upload is more likely to expose the difference between a fast completion and a long, speed-limited session.

Myth 3: Every 5G connection is standalone 5G
Standalone and non-standalone in plain language
Standalone (SA) 5G uses a 5G radio-access network with a 5G core. Non-standalone (NSA) 5G uses 5G radio alongside an existing LTE anchor. The terms describe network architecture, not a simple “new equals good, old equals bad” battery scale.
Samsung’s support guidance describes a Galaxy situation in which the phone remains connected to 3G or LTE while also using 5G for calls, texts and data. Samsung warns: “Because your phone is connected to multiple networks simultaneously, the battery will drain faster than one would typically expect, and the phone may get warmer than when solely on 3G or LTE.” That statement applies to the device and network behavior described on its support page; it should not be generalized to every 5G deployment. What simultaneous connectivity means for troubleshooting
When a phone is maintaining an LTE anchor, battery use can reflect both radios and the signaling needed to coordinate them. Heat is an additional clue because sustained radio activity can warm the handset. If battery loss and warmth appear mainly in a particular 5G location, the network mode and local coverage are plausible contributors. The observation still does not identify a universal penalty for all NSA networks or all phones.

Myth 4: Network configuration cannot change the result
The 2023 Galaxy S22 result
Network design can materially change energy efficiency. In a 2023 Signals Research Group report hosted by Nokia, a Galaxy S22 test compared 5G two-component-carrier standalone (2CC SA) with 5G one-component-carrier non-standalone (1CC NSA). The report gave a specific result: 2CC SA was 89% more energy-efficient than 1CC NSA in that test.
That number is meaningful only with its conditions attached: one phone model, particular carrier aggregation, and the tested SA and NSA configurations. It is not an estimate of how much longer your phone will last after a carrier enables standalone 5G. The report is available at Nokia’s hosted Signals Research Group study.

Carrier aggregation combines spectrum components to increase capacity or throughput. The number and type of component carriers, the anchor used by NSA, and the scheduler’s behavior all affect how much work the modem performs. Two phones showing a “5G” icon can therefore be using materially different radio arrangements. A result from 2CC SA cannot be transferred to 1CC SA, 1CC NSA or an unspecified commercial network without new measurements.

Myth 5: There is one reliable percentage for 5G’s battery penalty
Why a single number misleads
A percentage needs a defined phone, software version, modem, bands, signal environment, network architecture and workload. Changing any of those can alter both current draw and transfer time. Even within one city, indoor reception, cell loading and movement between cells can make two tests diverge.
The 89% figure belongs to the Galaxy S22 comparison described above; it is not a general 5G battery-life increase. Likewise, a higher or lower result from the 2019 benchmark cannot be converted into a current percentage for every handset. The available evidence supports conditional statements, not a universal “5G costs X%” rule.
Evidence age is part of the qualification
The central benchmark dates from 2019, when early commercial 5G devices and networks were being evaluated. The Galaxy S22 study dates from 2023 and still examined a particular phone and configuration. Both are useful for understanding mechanisms, but neither establishes which current phone has the best battery life or how every carrier’s network behaves in 2026.
Should you turn off 5G to save battery?
Turning off 5G can be a sensible experiment when your phone spends long periods in weak 5G coverage, becomes noticeably warm while idle, or loses charge faster in one location than on LTE. It is not automatically the best choice when 5G coverage is strong and you regularly perform large transfers.

On phones that provide a preferred-network setting, select LTE/4G for the test period, then return to the previous setting afterward. Menu names differ by manufacturer, software version and carrier, so record the exact setting you changed. Do not treat one afternoon as proof: compare similar locations, signal conditions and workloads.
How to run a fair battery comparison on your phone
- Choose a repeatable route or room. Test where you normally use the phone, because indoor attenuation and cell changes are part of the real result.
- Keep the workload constant. Use the same apps, display brightness, background synchronization and amount of downloaded data in each run.
- Test one network mode at a time. Record whether the phone is set to its automatic 5G mode or LTE-only mode, and avoid changing several battery settings simultaneously.
- Run each mode more than once. A single charge cycle can be distorted by a software update, background backup or a different signal path. Repeated observations are more informative than one dramatic result.
- Record context with the battery percentage. Note time, location, signal behavior, device temperature and the task completed. A percentage without those conditions cannot be compared fairly with a published test.
- Decide based on your priority. If responsiveness and quick transfers matter most, keep the mode that finishes work faster without unacceptable drain. If endurance in a weak-coverage area matters most, LTE-only may be the practical compromise.
Do not confuse phone battery tests with network energy studies
Arcep’s comparison, updated January 14, 2022, examines the energy consumption of 4G and 5G network deployment scenarios. It concerns infrastructure operated by network providers, not the battery inside an individual smartphone. A network can become more or less energy-intensive to deploy without proving that a handset loses a particular percentage of charge. The study is available from Arcep.
