The 51 formulas in my $5 Student Planner spreadsheet do not make it a GPA calculator. In my inspection of the workbook’s spreadsheet XML, I found that its semester calculation averages course percentages without weighting them by credits and does not convert the result to a 4.0 GPA scale. A formula count describes what is in a file; it does not prove that every advertised feature works.
MonkeyRun, the spreadsheet’s author and seller, published this self-audit on DEV Community on September 30, 2026. The findings below are the author’s account of inspecting the shipped workbook’s XML, not an independent download or test of the file. The author says the earlier listing called the spreadsheet a GPA calculator, and later language about a credits-weighted average was also inaccurate. The listing copy and preview images were revised, according to the author’s report at publication.

The reported count comes from examining workbook XML. It is not a measure of the spreadsheet’s usefulness, reliability, or completeness by itself. MonkeyRun’s article is Counting the formulas in my own $5 spreadsheet: 51 of them, and not one is a GPA.

Why the semester result is an average, not a GPA
In the Semester sheet, the author identifies cell F20 as containing IFERROR(ROUND(AVERAGEIFS(E9:E16,D9:D16,">0"),2),"add courses"). Column E is labeled “Current grade %” and column D “Credits.” The formula uses credits only as a filter: it includes a course when its credit value is greater than zero. It does not multiply each grade by its credits, and the author reports no conversion from percentages to a 4.0 scale. That makes the result an unweighted percentage average, not a credit-weighted average or GPA.
How much weighting can change an example
For illustration, the author compares a 4-credit course at 95% with a 1-credit course at 60%. Averaging the two percentages equally gives 77.5%; weighting them by credits gives 88.0%, a 10.5 percentage-point difference. This is an example calculation, not a measurement of the spreadsheet’s performance.

What the letter-grade formulas do—and do not establish
The author reports eight repeated formulas that map percentages to letter grades using thresholds from A through D/F. Letter labels do not turn the percentage average into a GPA: a GPA calculation requires a defined scale and rules for assigning grade points, and the author reports that the workbook does not convert results to a 4.0 scale.
Where the workbook’s ranges stop
Semester courses: rows 9 through 16
The author reports that the Semester sheet has eight course rows, from rows 9 to 16, and that the average and letter-grade formulas stop at row 16. Courses entered beyond that range would not be included unless the relevant formulas were copied to cover them.

Time Log: weekly and all-time totals use different endpoints
The weekly total reportedly uses SUMIFS over C4:C200 with a Monday-through-Sunday date window, then divides by 60. The all-time total reportedly uses SUM(C4:C500)/60. Because the weekly range ends at row 200 while the all-time range ends at row 500, entries after row 200 may count toward the all-time total without counting toward a weekly total.
Assignments: countdown formulas and unused weight columns
The Assignments sheet reportedly contains 40 copies of IF(A4="","",A4-TODAY()) across G4:G43. The author says the workbook’s XML also shows conditional-formatting rules that color overdue items red and items due within three days amber. The sheet has “Weight %” and “Grade %” columns, but the author found that no formula references them. As a result, those columns do not implement the previously described weighting behavior.

What an XML inspection can—and cannot—tell you
Inspecting spreadsheet XML can reveal stored formulas, ranges, and conditional-formatting rules. It does not, on its own, verify how a workbook behaves when opened and recalculated in a spreadsheet application. The author says they did not confirm how Excel or Google Sheets handles blank values in the average range, or how a weighted replacement should treat a course that has credits entered but no grade; they also name LibreOffice as an environment for which that behavior remains open.

The author considered a SUMPRODUCT replacement inadequate without matching criteria in both numerator and denominator, and says they did not ship a replacement because they could not test it. The unresolved question is how AVERAGEIFS and any weighted replacement treat blank cells in the average range, on Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice. Formula inspection is useful for identifying what a workbook is set up to calculate; application-level checks are needed to validate how it handles real entries and edge cases.
What the author disclosed about the product and article
The source article describes the Student Planner as a digital download sold through Payhip for a one-time $5, and mentions a $19 bundle. These are product details reported in the September 30, 2026 article and may change. The author says the listing copy and preview images were revised after the mismatch was found.
The article also discloses its use of AI assistance: “This post was drafted by an AI assistant working from the project’s own files and command output. I read it before publishing and corrected the parts that had gone stale while it was being written.” The spreadsheet audit and that disclosure are attributed to MonkeyRun, the author and seller. The article closes with the author’s line: “The file always answers.”
