Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Xbox Game Pass Essential and PlayStation Plus Essential each reached 40%, up from 37%. These are shares of people who had already canceled—not cancellation rates, subscription price increases, or evidence that total cancellations rose.
What the reported figures show
AllThings. How reported the figures from Circana’s Future of Insights for Video Games Consumer Survey. The comparison is between the share of recent cancellers who cited cost in Q1 2026 and the share in a later survey period. The changes below are percentage points, not percentage increases in prices or cancellations.

For Nintendo Switch Online, the reported response was: “Couldn’t justify the cost of the subscription within my budget but liked the service.” That wording matters: it describes someone who still valued the service but felt its recurring charge no longer fit their budget. The cost response does not establish that Nintendo raised its price; a separate report says the U.S. price had not changed.

The denominator is people who had already canceled a subscription and then gave a reason. The statistic is not that half of all Switch Online members canceled, nor that half of subscribers intend to cancel. It also does not show that the total number of cancellations increased. As AllThings. How and theGeek.games both caution, the figures describe reasons among cancellers, not overall churn volume.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
The reported pattern therefore supports a narrower conclusion: among surveyed people who had canceled, a cost-related budget or value concern was more commonly cited in the later period than in Q1 2026. It cannot by itself identify whether that shift came from tighter household budgets, changing service value, subscriber mix, or another factor.
How much confidence to place in the comparison
AllThings. How attributes the figures to Circana’s Future of Insights for Video Games Consumer Survey. TheGeek.games also attributes them to Circana and identifies Mat Piscatella as the analyst who shared the findings. The original survey materials and post were not independently reviewed in the cited coverage, and neither report gives the sample size or field dates. Treat the percentages as reported survey findings rather than a complete account of the survey methodology.
Rank #2
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
That limitation is especially relevant when comparing services: the figures provide a directional comparison of stated reasons among cancellers, but the available reports do not provide enough methodological detail to judge sampling uncertainty or whether differences between services are statistically meaningful.

Why a satisfied subscriber might still cancel
The Switch Online response captures a common subscription trade-off without claiming that the service itself became worse: a person may like what a subscription offers and still decide that another recurring bill is harder to justify within a household budget. The survey result is evidence of that stated tension among cancellers, not a measure of satisfaction among all subscribers.
