Make a wildlife-friendlier Halloween display by removing loose synthetic webbing, marking glass with dense shapes, choosing natural or cardboard materials, managing pumpkins carefully, and using warm, dim lights for short periods. These changes reduce entanglement, collisions, ingestion, litter and light disturbance without eliminating the Halloween effect.
1. Skip synthetic outdoor spiderwebs and loose fibers
Do not stretch acrylic or other synthetic webbing across hedges, trees, fences or flight paths. Birds, bats and other animals can become tangled, leaving them unable to feed or escape predators and exposed to exhaustion, starvation or weather. BirdLife Australia also cautions against fishing line, polymer rope, string, yarn, cotton wool, balloons and fruit-tree netting outdoors.

As Alison Hermance, communications director at WildCare, told Audubon in 2024: “Spider web is designed by nature, and by the spider, to entangle and entrap.” Bat Conservation International similarly warned in 2025 that stretchy artificial webs can create real dangers for bats, birds and other wildlife.

- Keep any web effect indoors, away from open windows and doors.
- Use wall-mounted paper or cardboard web artwork instead of loose strands.
- Secure every decoration so wind cannot carry fibers into vegetation or waterways.
- Remove all temporary material immediately after Halloween; do not leave it to weather outdoors.
2. Turn windows into visible Halloween art
Transparent and reflective glass can be difficult for birds to detect. A window that looks like open sky or vegetation can cause a high-speed collision, particularly when decorations or indoor lighting create reflections.

Make the glass obvious from outside
- Apply dense, high-contrast ghosts, bats, witch silhouettes or other shapes to the outside surface of the window.
- Leave no more than 5–10 centimetres between shapes, following BirdLife Australia’s guidance.
- Use decals, reusable clings or strings that break up the uninterrupted pane; make sure they are firmly attached.
- Check the display in daylight and after dark. If large clear areas still resemble an opening, add more markings.
Reusable high-contrast Halloween window decals can provide a seasonal design while remaining easy to remove and store. Covering the exterior is important because markings seen only from indoors may not be visible to an approaching bird.
3. Choose natural or cardboard materials
Straw, untreated sticks and twigs, leaves and other organic garden waste can create texture without adding synthetic fibers. Cardboard cut-outs are another practical option: they are lightweight, recyclable where local facilities accept them, and can be stored for reuse if kept dry.

Materials to avoid near trees and feeding areas
- Lifelike plastic fruits, nuts and berries that could prompt birds to investigate or ingest pieces.
- Small detachable parts that can become litter or nesting material.
- Treated, painted or chemically coated natural materials where animals may contact or chew them.
- Loose string, yarn, netting or rope that can wrap around feet, wings or necks.
BirdLife Australia reported in 2025 that scientists estimate around 30% of Australian bird nests incorporate human-made materials. That figure is specific to Australia and does not mean every manufactured item is used safely; it shows why removing scraps and loose pieces matters. Pack up organic and cardboard decorations after the holiday so they do not blow into habitat or become nesting hazards.

4. Place pumpkins with wildlife and pets in mind
Position pumpkins where they cannot roll into traffic, block a path or create a reflective hazard beside glass. Keep them away from household pets, which may chew painted surfaces, candles or other decorations.

Know when a pumpkin is no longer suitable for display
- Remove pumpkins that are spoiled, moldy, painted or chemically treated before animals can reach them.
- Do not assume every wild species can safely eat pumpkin; local diets and disease risks vary.
- After Halloween, compost pumpkins through an appropriate local service or dispose of them according to municipal guidance.
- Never leave a deteriorating pumpkin in a wildlife area simply because it appears biodegradable.
If a display uses candles, extinguish them before leaving the area and avoid placing open flames where pets or wildlife could knock them over.

Lighting can alter nocturnal movement and feeding, especially near bat roosts, waterways and travel corridors. Bat Conservation Trust and Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water advise keeping lights away from these sensitive places. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service identifies blue, white and other cooler LEDs as the least favorable choices for birds and wildlife.

A lower-impact lighting setup
- Choose amber, orange, red or another warm-colored LED rather than blue-white light.
- Set brightness to the lowest level that makes the display visible.
- Point fixtures downward and use shades or shields to prevent spill into trees and the sky.
- Use a timer or motion sensor instead of continuous illumination.
- Turn the display off before bed and never leave it running all night.
Do not aim lights at known roosts, nests, feeding sites, ponds or corridors used by flying animals. A short, controlled lighting period is less disruptive than an equally bright display that runs for hours.

A final pre-Halloween safety check
- Walk the entire display route and remove every loose strand, cord and small detachable part.
- Stand outside each decorated window to confirm that birds can see the markings.
- Check that pumpkins are stable, untreated and inaccessible to pets.
- Confirm that lights are warm-colored, shielded, timed and directed away from habitat.
- Schedule a complete teardown the day after Halloween and dispose of materials responsibly.
