To put a time in a Discord message, convert the intended date and time—with its time zone—to Unix time in seconds, then place that integer in Discord’s timestamp markup. You can get the value with GNU date, Python, a date/time converter, an operating-system tool, or an application that provides a timestamp formatter. Verify the resulting instant before sharing it.
What a Unix timestamp means
A Unix timestamp is commonly expressed as the number of seconds elapsed since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. The GNU manual illustrates the counting with @0 for the epoch and @1 for one second later. For Discord, the important detail is the unit: its timestamp syntax expects Unix time in seconds, not milliseconds.

If you are converting an appointment written as a local wall-clock time, first identify the intended time zone. “7 p.m.” alone does not identify one exact instant; “7 p.m. in New York” does. Convert that instant to Unix seconds, rather than treating the displayed local time as UTC.

| Method | What you need | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
GNU date |
A GNU/Linux system or another environment with GNU date | That the input is interpreted as seconds and the displayed time matches the intended instant |
| Python | Python available on your computer | That you are using the intended time zone and a seconds value |
| Date/time converter | A converter with an explicit date, time, and time-zone input | That its output is Unix seconds, not milliseconds |
| Operating-system or date/time app | An app or system utility that offers epoch conversion | Its units, time-zone handling, and converted date |
| Application, bot, or library formatter | A tool that exposes a timestamp value or Discord formatter | That the result is an integer in seconds suitable for Discord markup |
1. Use GNU date to inspect a known timestamp
On GNU systems, pass a known epoch value with an @ prefix:
date -d '@1700000000'
Replace 1700000000 with the seconds value you want to inspect. The command prints the corresponding date and time using the system’s date handling, which is useful for checking a value before you post it. GNU documents the @-prefixed input form. The command-line options differ on some non-GNU systems, including some other operating systems, so do not assume this exact command works everywhere.
2. Use Python for current time or conversion checks
Python’s time.time() returns the current time as seconds since the epoch. To examine a value as a UTC or local calendar time, use time.gmtime() or time.localtime():

The first printed value is an integer suitable for the timestamp position in Discord markup. The final line displays the instant as a UTC calendar representation. Use time.localtime(timestamp) instead if you want to inspect it in the machine’s local time zone. Python documents platform-dependent limits for some time conversions, so very distant dates may not be supported on every system.

3. Use a date/time converter
Choose a converter that lets you enter the date, clock time, and time zone explicitly, then copy its Unix-seconds result. No particular converter is established here as preferred or endorsed. Before using its output, check whether it labels the result as seconds or milliseconds and convert the appointment back to a recognizable date and time.
4. Check for an operating-system or date/time app function
Some system utilities and date/time applications provide an epoch or Unix-time conversion function. Availability and interface labels vary by platform, so use the app’s own documentation or help and confirm what its output represents. If it accepts a date and time, make sure the time zone is explicit; if it only displays an epoch value, check that the value is in seconds.

5. Use a formatter in an application, bot, or library
If a scheduling app, bot, or programming library already has a timestamp field or formatter, it can save a separate conversion step. Use it only when you can confirm that it produces Unix seconds for Discord, rather than another date format or milliseconds. The exact steps depend on the particular application, and no specific tool’s behavior is established here.
Put the timestamp into Discord
Discord’s message-formatting reference documents two forms: <t:TIMESTAMP> and <t:TIMESTAMP:STYLE>. Replace TIMESTAMP with your Unix-seconds integer. The optional style selects a display format; check Discord’s current reference for the available style letters and their exact labels.
- Write down the intended date, time, and source time zone.
- Convert that exact instant to Unix seconds using one of the methods above.
- Choose either
<t:TIMESTAMP>or a style-specific form, such as<t:TIMESTAMP:STYLE>, following Discord’s current formatting reference. - Replace the placeholder text with the integer and send the markup as message text. For example, a value of
1700000000would be written as<t:1700000000>. - Check Discord’s rendered time against the event’s intended date and time. If the result is wrong, revisit the source time zone and confirm the value is seconds rather than milliseconds.
Discord-hosted documentation describes this syntax as Unix time in seconds. The formatting reference is the appropriate source for the current style options: Discord message formatting: timestamp styles.
Common mistakes and edge cases
- Using milliseconds: Some tools return a value in milliseconds. Discord expects seconds, so an unexpectedly large number may indicate a unit mismatch.
- Leaving out the time zone: A local clock time can map to different instants depending on the zone. Include the location or UTC offset when converting.
- Assuming every system uses the same command: GNU
dateaccepts@-prefixed epoch input, but other systems may use different options or tools. - Converting dates far from the present: GNU’s manual notes that some older 32-bit systems have narrower timestamp ranges, and Python documents platform-dependent limits and conversion errors. Ordinary event scheduling is unlikely to require this detail, but far-future or historical dates can expose it.
For everyday scheduling, the safest check is to convert the generated integer back to a human-readable date and confirm the time zone and event time before posting.
