Instagram doesn’t offer one universal “URL field” you can paste into every surface. In practice, clickable links depend on where the link is shown: Stories (link sticker), profile (Website), and DMs (a URL users can tap).
This guide maps the real options for Instagram Stories, Bio, DM, Video posts, and Reels—then gives you five reliable ways to drive taps to your website or landing page without guessing.

What counts as a clickable link on Instagram
A “clickable link” means the user can tap something in the Instagram UI that opens an external destination (usually a browser or in-app webview). On Instagram, that’s typically available via:

- Bio: Website field (tap-forward URL)
- DMs: URLs sent in chat (tap-forward)
For feed posts and Reels, Instagram doesn’t consistently support an external URL you can embed directly into the media itself. The common workaround is routing viewers to a clickable link in your profile (and prompting the tap with clear CTAs).

Account type and features
Most link features you care about (Website field, link sticker, sending URLs in DMs) are available on both personal and business/creator accounts, but feature rollouts and sticker availability can vary by region and account history.
If something is missing, don’t assume it’s you—check Instagram’s current feature availability for your account and update the app.
Clickable external links vs. plain text URLs
Putting a URL in a caption or comment often isn’t reliably tappable. Instagram may show it as plain text, and users may need to copy it. For guaranteed click-through, use the features that Instagram marks as link UI (Website field, link sticker, or DMs).
Five ways to add clickable links
1) Link sticker in Stories
Use the link sticker to add a tappable URL to your Instagram Story. Viewers tap the sticker and go straight to your page.
This is the most “literal” way to put a clickable link on Instagram media.

2) Website field in your Bio
Set your destination in the profile’s Website field. In most cases, it appears as a clickable link under your bio.
Feed posts and Reels can’t reliably carry an external URL as a UI element, so your bio link becomes your universal fallback.
3) Send a URL inside a DM
When you paste a URL into a chat, many versions of the Instagram messaging UI render it as something the recipient can tap to open.
This works well for “I’ll send the link” workflows, customer support, and lead follow-ups.
4) Use a DM CTA button via your profile contact options
If you want users to reach you faster, set up messaging/contact so viewers tap a message call-to-action. Once the DM is open, you can send the actual URL immediately.

For Reels and feed videos, the practical “clickable link strategy” is: (1) keep your bio link current, then (2) prompt viewers to tap your profile link.
Use on-screen text like “Tap the link in bio” plus a pinned comment or caption context to reduce friction.
Stories: add a clickable link sticker
Stories are where Instagram most clearly supports a clickable external URL. The goal is to ensure the sticker appears as a tappable element on the Story canvas.
- Open the Instagram app and tap + in the top-right (or swipe right on the feed).
- Create your Story: take a photo/video or choose one from your gallery.
- Tap the Sticker icon (typically a square smiley/sticker button).
- Select Link (or Website, depending on the UI).
- Paste your URL into the field.
- Choose the display text for the sticker (e.g., Learn more).
- Tap Done and position the sticker anywhere on the screen.
- Tap Your Story (or Send To to specific people) and post.
Recommended link best practices for Stories
- Use a clean landing page URL (avoid temporary short links unless you control the destination long-term).
- Match the Story copy to the landing page to reduce bounce.
- Test on both iPhone and Android—the preview and tap behavior can differ.
Bio: use the Website field for a clickable link
Your bio is the most consistent place for a clickable external URL. For Reels and video posts, this also becomes the main “destination” users should tap.

- Go to your profile.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Find the field labeled Website.
- Paste your URL (for example: https://example.com/new-arrivals).
- Tap Done or Save.
- Open your profile on another account (or log out) to confirm it shows as a clickable link.
When you need multiple links
Instagram only gives you a single primary Website field. Use one of these strategies:
- Link hub: point Website to a landing page that lists multiple options.
- Campaign swapping: change Website when you launch a new offer (then keep Stories on-brand with the same destination).
- QR for offline: if you run events, include a QR that matches your current landing URL, but keep the Website field in sync.
DMs: send a tap-through link in a message
DMs are the fastest way to deliver a clickable URL to a specific person—especially when someone asks for pricing, availability, or a product page.
- Open the conversation in Direct Messages.
- Copy your destination URL.
- Paste it into the message field.
- Send the message.
- Verify that the recipient sees it as a link they can tap (you can test by sending to a second account).
Make DMs link-friendly
- Include context: “Here’s the page we discussed—tap to view details.”
- Use one URL per message to reduce confusion.
- Consider URL hygiene: keep query parameters stable when possible.
Video posts and Reels: route clicks through your profile link
On feed media (standard video posts and Reels), you generally can’t embed an external clickable URL that behaves like the Story link sticker. Instead, your clickable link is your bio, and your media should explicitly tell viewers what to tap.
- Update your bio Website to the destination you want people to reach.
- Create your Reel or video post.
- Add an on-screen CTA like: Tap the link in bio or Get the free guide in my link.
- Pin a comment (if it’s appropriate for your account) that reiterates the action and what they’ll get.
- Track performance by aligning each campaign with a specific landing page URL in your bio.
How to avoid the “link in bio” ambiguity
Many accounts say “link in bio” without telling viewers what the link is. Replace vague CTAs with one specific outcome.
- Instead of: “Link in bio!”
- Use: “Link in bio for the exact workout plan”
Troubleshooting and gotchas
Problem: Link sticker option is missing
- Update Instagram to the latest version available in your app store.
- Check that your account settings match your intended feature use (some features appear only after account eligibility checks).
- Try creating a new Story from scratch, then reopen the Sticker menu.
- Test on Wi-Fi first, then on mobile data—network issues can hide sticker assets.
Problem: Bio Website link doesn’t look clickable
- Confirm you entered the full URL (including https:// if required by the UI).
- Open your profile from another account/device to confirm what followers will see.
- Remove trailing spaces and unusual characters; paste a clean URL.
Problem: DM link isn’t tappable
- Ensure you pasted a valid URL format (again: full scheme like https:// helps).
- Send to a second account to verify whether it renders as a link card for recipients.
- If it appears as plain text, send a slightly different format (some UIs detect URLs differently depending on punctuation).
Problem: Reels/video viewers still don’t tap
- Update the bio link to match the exact offer shown in the Reel.
- Use a timed CTA: put the text on-screen in the first 2–3 seconds and repeat near the end.
- Make the landing page load fast and mobile-friendly; slow pages kill clicks.
FAQs
Can I add a clickable link directly to an Instagram Reel?
Not reliably as a native external-link UI element. The standard approach is to send viewers to your clickable bio Website and prompt them with a clear CTA.

Can I add clickable links to Instagram feed captions?
Captions may display URLs as plain text. If you need guaranteed click-through behavior, use Stories link stickers or route to your bio Website.
Are link stickers available for everyone?
Availability can vary based on account eligibility, region, and rollout timing. If the Link sticker doesn’t appear, update the app and confirm feature access from your account settings and Story creation UI.
What’s the best way to run a time-limited promotion?
Set your bio Website to the campaign landing page, then use Stories link stickers on the same URL. If you handle inbound questions in DMs, paste the same campaign link there too.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I use UTM parameters?
Yes, if you track performance. Use consistent UTM tagging for Stories vs. bio vs. DMs so you can compare click-through and conversions accurately.
Final Thoughts
Clickable links on Instagram aren’t one-feature-fits-all—they’re tied to specific surfaces. Use link stickers for Stories, the Website field for Bio, and DM URLs for direct conversations.
For Reels and video posts, win by being explicit: point viewers to your profile link, keep it updated to match the offer, and make the CTA unambiguous.
