Five VPN services publish material aimed at GTA Online players: ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost, and Proton VPN. None of them has been shown to be the fastest or the cheapest for GTA Online, and no independent comparison of their effect on game speed, latency, or price has been published. Treat them as a shortlist to test, not a ranking. A VPN also can’t fix most connection problems on its own, so start with Rockstar’s own checks. A VPN is worth trying only if your measured results improve.
GTA 5 Online is the online mode of Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar’s support pages call it GTA Online, and this guide uses that name.

Start with Rockstar’s connection checks
Rockstar’s GTA Online PC connection troubleshooting page, last updated May 2, 2024, answers the question “How can I resolve my connection issues while playing GTA Online on PC?” Work through its checks before you change anything else:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Check service status. Confirm that Rockstar’s services are running and whether the problem affects many players or lines up with scheduled maintenance. If it does, a local fix won’t help.
- Test your local connection against Rockstar’s targets. The page lists a download target of 7.5 Mbps, a recommended upload of 1 Mbps, and a minimum upload of 0.5 Mbps. These are published targets for PC play. Meeting them doesn’t prove your connection is good, and falling short doesn’t mean you need a more expensive plan.
- Move to a wired connection if you’re on Wi-Fi. Rockstar’s wording is direct: “If you are on a wireless connection and still having issues, try a wired connection.”
- Check your router and network settings for the listed ports. Rockstar lists five UDP ports for GTA Online on PC: 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457, and 61458. Confirm that your router’s NAT and port settings allow them, using your platform’s network guidance.
- Only then consider a VPN, and treat it as an optional routing or privacy tool, not a repair.
What a VPN can and cannot do for GTA Online
A VPN sends your traffic through an extra server before it reaches the game servers. That has two possible effects, and both depend on your situation:
#1 Best Overall
- Blazing-fast WiFi 7 boosts tri-band throughput up to 12000 Mbps with 320 MHz channels of 6 GHz band, Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 4K-QAM
- Powerful wired network capacity of up to 20G with one 2.5G WAN port and seven 2.5G LAN ports.
- High-performance quad-core 2.0GHz CPU with robust cooling, 2GB RAM and eight internal antennas providing up to 3000 sq. ft. of range.
- Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs
- ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs
- It may offer a different route. If your default route is poor, a VPN server may take a better path. This is not guaranteed.
- It can add latency. Provider pages themselves acknowledge that a VPN may increase ping, and that any reduction depends on your connection, your ISP, and the VPN server you choose.
- Distance still matters. CyberGhost’s GTA-specific page acknowledges that a VPN cannot eliminate the effect of physical distance, and that latency may change.
- More server locations don’t prove lower ping. A nearby server is the choice that matters, meaning one close to your teammates or to the connection point you actually care about.
- IP masking and encryption are privacy features. Providers describe them as security benefits. They don’t make an account immune to attacks or account-level problems.
Account error 1.000.7 is a separate case
Rockstar’s listing for account error 1.000.7, dated June 1, 2026, tells players to check the service and their internet connection, and to make sure the network or ISP isn’t using a proxy or VPN. That advice applies to this error during troubleshooting. It isn’t a general ban on VPN use. If you’re working through error 1.000.7, turn the VPN off and retest before drawing any conclusion.
Consoles need a different setup
On PC, most VPN providers run a desktop app. Consoles generally can’t run those apps, so the providers describe other methods. The table below shows what each provider’s own materials describe. Check your router’s compatibility before you buy anything.
Rank #2
- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
| Provider | Console route described by the provider |
|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | Router-based setup for consoles; the desktop app is used on PC |
| NordVPN | Router configuration, or a VPN-protected Windows hotspot. NordVPN states that consoles lack built-in NordVPN app support. |
| Surfshark | Router configuration |
| CyberGhost | Router use for consoles, described in its gaming device guidance |
| Proton VPN | Not stated in the provider material reviewed |
The five candidates
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN publishes GTA Online-specific material describing IP masking, encryption, and possible routing benefits, along with PC and router-based console use. These are the provider’s claims. They aren’t independent measurements of game performance.

NordVPN
NordVPN’s gaming material discusses nearby servers, latency trade-offs, and testing your connection. Its support pages describe router configuration and a VPN-protected Windows hotspot as the console routes. Use the nearby-server guidance as a starting point for your own tests, not as a promise of lower ping.

Price and terms: what to check before you pay
This guide doesn’t list prices. Subscription costs vary by country, plan, and promotion, and no like-for-like price comparison across the five providers was established. Before you subscribe, check:
Best Value
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- The introductory price and the renewal price, and how long the billing period lasts.
- The local currency price in your country, since listed prices can differ by region.
- The refund window and whether it applies to your plan.
- The number of simultaneous connections, especially if you want to use the same account on a PC and a console router setup.
- Whether a console route requires a router that the provider supports for VPN setup.
If Rockstar’s wired-connection advice applies to you, the only accessory it points to is an Ethernet cable. Choose one long enough to reach your router without strain. This guide doesn’t recommend a particular length, category, or model.
How to test whether a VPN helps your connection
This guide doesn’t include benchmark results. Any numbers you get will come from your own setup, so test it under controlled conditions:
- Pick one GTA Online mode, one device, and one time window, such as the same evening for several sessions.
- Record your ping and any connection readout your platform shows, with the VPN turned off.
- Turn the VPN on, select a server near the players or connection point you care about, and repeat the same test in the same mode and time window.
- Keep the VPN only if your results improve consistently. A single good session doesn’t count.
Frequently asked questions
Use the sections above as your decision path. Start with Rockstar’s checks, test a VPN only if your own measurements justify it, and confirm local pricing and renewal terms before you subscribe.
Did you find this useful? Compare your own results against Rockstar’s published targets, and keep the VPN only if it improves them.
