Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

NVIDIA’s own advice is the opposite of a sales pitch: when you’re troubleshooting lag, NVIDIA Support says, “Turn off any Virtual Private Networks (VPN) you are using.” A VPN can raise latency, add stutter, or send you to the wrong GeForce NOW data center.
So this list is five shortlist candidates for people who want a VPN anyway, for privacy on public Wi-Fi or for a specific routing need. It is not a speed ranking. Below: the five, the evidence behind each, and a test that shows within minutes whether a VPN hurts your sessions.

Can you use a VPN with GeForce NOW?
Connecting is one question and performing well is another. ExpressVPN’s GeForce NOW page says VPN use with the service is allowed. That is a vendor statement. NVIDIA’s own support article establishes only that a VPN can degrade a session. Neither source addresses account enforcement or terms-of-service consequences, so treat “allowed” as the vendor’s claim.
The practical rule: a VPN adds a hop. Your traffic goes to the VPN server first and then to NVIDIA’s data center. That only helps if the detour is tiny or your normal route is poor.

What GeForce NOW needs from your connection
These figures come from NVIDIA’s current system requirements page (no publication date shown; checked in 2026). They apply to the PC stream modes listed there, so check the section for your device type.
- Latency: under 80 ms network latency to an NVIDIA data center. This is a ceiling, not a promise that any connection meets it.
- Bandwidth: 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS, 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS, 65 Mbps for 5K at 120 FPS.
- Connection type: NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or a router with 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Bandwidth is not the same as stability. A VPN that tests fast in a download test can still add jitter or packet loss, and those are what you feel in a cloud-streamed game.

The five VPNs worth shortlisting
These five are named because they appear in the 2026 Artifact Security comparison that NordVPN reports on its own site, which covered NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, ProtonVPN and Surfshark. That report is a vendor’s account of a test, and it is not a GeForce NOW measurement. We have not run GeForce NOW tests on any of them, and the order below is alphabetical, not a ranking.

| VPN | GeForce NOW-specific evidence | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | Has a dedicated GeForce NOW page (vendor claims) | Says its encryption can help against content-based ISP throttling. That is a promotional claim, not independent proof. States VPN use with GeForce NOW is permitted. |
| Mullvad | None found | Appears in the Artifact Security comparison as reported by NordVPN. |
| NordVPN | None found | Published the report on the Artifact Security comparison, so treat its favorable framing as the vendor’s. |
| ProtonVPN | None found | Appears in the same comparison. |
| Surfshark | None found | Appears in the same comparison. |
For broader context on VPNs in gaming generally, TechRadar’s gaming VPN guide (published June 17, 2026) is a reasonable cross-check. It does not test GeForce NOW. Prices and plan terms change often, so check each provider’s current page rather than relying on a figure here.

How to choose among them
Judge on cloud-gaming criteria, not top speed
- Latency to your GeForce NOW data center through a nearby VPN server, not the server’s maximum throughput.
- Stability: packet loss and jitter during real play.
- Server locations near both you and the data center you’ll be assigned to.
- Device support: an app or router setup for the device you actually stream on (PC, TV, phone).
- Privacy priorities: logging policy, jurisdiction, audits, and cost.
When a VPN is the wrong tool
If your goal is lower ping, skip it. If you’re lagging, NVIDIA’s guidance is to turn it off. A wired connection is a more reliable fix: NVIDIA recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, though a cable can’t guarantee lower latency either.
How to test a VPN with GeForce NOW
- Connect the device by Ethernet if it supports it, or to 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- With the VPN off, run the network test in the GeForce NOW app and note the latency and any warnings.
- Play the same game, at the same settings and at a similar time of day, for 10 to 15 minutes. Note stutters and the data center shown.
- Turn the VPN on, choosing the server closest to you. Repeat the network test and the same session.
- Compare latency, stutter, and whether you were routed to a different data center. If the VPN session is worse, disconnect, as NVIDIA advises.
- Try one or two other nearby servers before giving up. Keep the VPN only if results match or beat the baseline, or if the privacy benefit justifies the cost.
A VPN is most plausible as a help if you suspect your ISP is handling streaming traffic badly. Even then the evidence is a vendor claim, so the with-and-without test is the only proof that counts for your line.

- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Other things that matter on non-PC setups
NVIDIA says a supported gamepad is required to play on TVs, per its requirements page. If you stream to a TV, check that VPN support is available on that device before subscribing. Many TVs and consoles can’t run a VPN app directly, which pushes you toward router-level setups that add complexity.
What is not established
No comparable, independent measurements of latency, jitter or packet loss across these five VPNs on GeForce NOW were found. Any article that crowns a clear winner is relying on vendor material or its own undisclosed testing. Until independent data exists, your own A/B test beats any ranking.
