A VPN will not reliably lower your ping in Rocket League, and it cannot guarantee access to a region the game does not offer you. Rocket League already lets you choose a matchmaking region, and Epic Games Support recommends the closest one. A VPN changes the IP location your traffic appears to come from and can change the network path it takes. That makes a few popular services worth comparing, but no published Rocket League-specific test shows that any of them reduces latency or unlocks a region. Treat the five names below as candidates to test, not as a ranking of which one is best.

Start with the region setting Rocket League already has

For Casual and Competitive matchmaking, Epic’s support instructions use this path:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. From the main menu, select Play.
  2. Choose Casual or Competitive.
  3. Open Regions in the upper right of the screen.
  4. Choose a region from the list, or choose Recommended.

Recommended selects the closest region and generally gives the best connectivity, according to Epic. The listed regions are US-East, US-Central, US-West, Europe, Asia-SE Mainland, Asia-SE Maritime, Asia-East, Middle East, Oceania, South Africa, South America, and India. Tournament and Private Match regions follow separate instructions in the same Epic support article. Tournament region can be changed only once every 24 hours, and not within 24 hours of the selected tournament ending.

The phrase “play in any region” therefore has a hard boundary. You can play in any region on this list, but a VPN does not add regions to it.

Why a VPN does not solve the distance problem

Epic’s guidance is direct: “When playing Rocket League, it’s best to choose the region closest to you.” It also warns that “Choosing regions that are farther away may lead to lag and packet loss.” The problem with a distant region is distance itself. A VPN adds another leg to the route, so it can increase latency when the endpoint is far from both you and the game region, even if it improves a poor path from your ISP.

Rocket League’s patch notes add a further detail. In version 2.49, Epic changed the game so that “Players will now ping individual data centers in their selected region instead of a singular server.” Choosing a region therefore controls which group of data centers the game tests, and it increases the chance of a better average latency. A VPN does not give you control over which individual data center the game picks, so marketing that implies such control should be discounted.

Check the basics before paying for a VPN

Epic’s troubleshooting steps address most lag that is not caused by a remote server. Work through them first and note which change, if any, helps.

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro WiFi 7 Gaming Router - Quad-Band, 30Gbps, Mesh | Coverage up to 3,500 Sq. Ft., 10G Port x2, 2.5G Port x4. Game Boost for Low Latency Gaming & Streaming. VPN support
  • Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
  • Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
  • Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
  • Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
  • Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
  • Confirm the selected region. A region chosen by mistake, or a distant one left over from earlier, is the simplest cause of high ping.
  • Restart the router.
  • Use a wired connection. Epic’s PC troubleshooting recommends wired networking. This is the one step where an Ethernet cable is relevant, and it is a connection fix, not a VPN substitute.
  • Reduce competing traffic. Pause large downloads, streams, and uploads on the same network while you play.
  • Check Epic service status. The PC troubleshooting guide recommends this before assuming a problem is on your side.
  • Read the connection quality indicators. Epic’s indicators distinguish disconnection, server health problems, packet loss, latency variation, and high latency. Use them to decide what kind of problem you have. Consistently high latency points toward distance or the route. Packet loss and variation point toward an unstable path, often Wi-Fi or a congested line. A server health warning points toward Epic’s side.

If the indicators show clean connections and steady latency, a VPN is unlikely to be the fix. If they show a route problem that persists across matches, a VPN is worth testing.

The five candidates

This shortlist is based on features each provider documents for gaming and setup. It is not a measured Rocket League ranking, and no provider has been shown to outperform the others in this game. The descriptions below are vendor claims unless stated otherwise.

NordVPN

NordVPN’s gaming page says a gaming VPN should keep ping low, recommends WireGuard support and nearby servers, and says a VPN may find a cleaner route when an ISP path is unstable or congested. Its support material presents NordLynx as its speed-oriented protocol. These are statements about what the product aims to do. They are not evidence of a Rocket League ping improvement.

Proton VPN

Proton VPN describes choosing from a wide range of servers for gaming and says WireGuard is available. A wide server choice can help you compare routes to the same Rocket League region. Proton’s material does not establish a Rocket League-specific performance result.

ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN markets a gaming use case and says its service can run on a home router. Its marketing page does not show Rocket League latency tests. Before subscribing, confirm that the router-level setup works with your exact router and that your console can use it.

Surfshark

Surfshark’s gaming material discusses WireGuard and setting up VPN protection on a router. Its performance claims are vendor claims. Measure the route on your own connection rather than relying on them.

Windscribe

Windscribe publishes a page specifically about using its VPN with Rocket League, and it describes router setup and several protocols. The page is written by the vendor and is not independent testing. It is a reasonable candidate to trial, but treat the page as a description of the product rather than a result.

How to test a VPN fairly

A single ping reading tells you little. Use the following process before deciding whether a service helps your connection. Record the same details each time so that results can be compared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record your platform, home location, and the Rocket League region you select.
  2. Measure the direct connection, without a VPN, over several sessions at different times of day. This is your baseline.
  3. Connect to a VPN endpoint near the region you are playing, using the protocol the provider offers, such as WireGuard where available.
  4. Play in the same selected region and record ping, packet loss, and the connection indicators at the same times of day as the baseline.
  5. Compare consistency across sessions, not only the best reading. A route that is occasionally faster but more variable can produce worse matches.
  6. Try a second endpoint or provider only after the first result is clear, so each change is isolated.

If a VPN does not beat your direct baseline on the same region, keep the direct connection. It is also possible that a VPN gives a cleaner route at one time of day and a worse one at another, which is why the repeated baseline matters.

Console and router setups

Console use is a different buying question from a PC app. Several of the providers above describe router-level setup, and that can change which devices are protected. Before subscribing, check the following:

  • Your console model supports the connection method you plan to use, and the provider’s setup instructions cover that console.
  • Your router model supports the VPN configuration the provider describes. Not every router can run a VPN client.
  • The setup keeps the console on a wired or stable network path, since a VPN adds an extra leg whichever device it runs on.
  • You have a way to revert the router change quickly if latency gets worse, and you can still reach Epic’s region settings afterward.

Who should test a VPN, and who should not

  • Test a VPN if your connection shows persistent route-related problems on the correct region, and the direct baseline is measurably poor.
  • Test a VPN if you need an IP location change for a reason unrelated to ping and understand that it does not change the region list.
  • Do not expect a VPN to fix lag caused by a distant region you have chosen. Switch to the closest region or Recommended first.
  • Do not expect a VPN to fix packet loss on a congested or wireless home network. Wired connection and reduced competing traffic come first.

Keep in mind that a VPN can reduce your connection quality if its endpoint is distant or overloaded, even when the provider’s marketing describes a faster protocol.

Epic Games and the providers named above have not published a joint performance result for Rocket League. Until you have your own repeatable measurements, the official region setting and the closest-region recommendation are the most reliable tools available.

Check each provider’s current terms, plans, and availability directly on its website before subscribing, since those details can change.

The Bottom Line

Use Rocket League’s own region selector first, and choose the closest region or Recommended. A VPN is worth trying only if your direct connection shows a persistent route problem in that region, and then only if your own measurements show it beats the direct baseline. None of the five services named here has been shown to reduce Rocket League ping or unlock regions the game does not list.
