What the provider pages and Indian regulatory documents do establish is narrower and more useful: some major providers can give you an IP address that appears to be Indian, but many of them deliver that address from servers located outside India. This guide explains that difference first, then the Indian rules that apply to VPN providers, then the five providers worth checking, and the criteria to use before you pay.
Start with the difference between being in India and having an Indian IP
Connecting to a VPN while you are physically in India gives you a server somewhere else; it does not make your traffic Indian. Choosing an “India” location in a VPN app gives you a server that the provider says is assigned an Indian IP address. That server may sit in India, but several providers say it does not. The distinction matters for service access, for privacy, and for how a provider responds to Indian legal requirements.

Provider documentation offers concrete examples:
- NordVPN says its India location is virtual, and that its physical India servers were shut down in response to CERT-In rules.
- Proton VPN says its Smart Routing feature gives an Indian IP from servers physically located in Singapore.
- Surfshark labels its Indian locations as virtual.
These are company statements, not independent verification of server locations. Treat them as what each provider says about its own network, and check the current page before you buy.

CERT-In’s directions dated 28 April 2022 apply to VPN service providers and to other covered entities. The directions contain two obligations that are often confused, so they are set out separately below. The primary text is in the CERT-In directions.

Subscriber and customer records: five years or longer
Covered VPN service providers must register specified subscriber or customer information and keep it for five years or longer. The listed fields include validated names, the hire period, the IP addresses allotted and used, the registration IP and timestamp, the purpose for hiring the service, address and contact details, and the ownership pattern. Where another law requires a longer period, that longer period applies. This is a requirement about account and registration records. It does not establish that every provider logs browsing activity.
ICT system logs: a rolling 180 days
A separate general provision requires covered entities to keep ICT system logs for a rolling 180 days within India. This is a log-retention rule, and whether it applies to a particular provider depends on that provider’s status and facts.
Who the rules apply to
CERT-In’s FAQ on the cybersecurity directions defines a “VPN Service provider” as an entity offering internet-proxy-like services through VPN technologies to general internet subscribers or users. The FAQ states that the direction does not apply to enterprise or corporate VPNs. Whether a specific provider falls inside that definition depends on how it offers its service, so avoid reading the rules as “all VPNs must keep all browsing records for five years.” They do not say that.

Is using a VPN in India legal?
Proton’s India server page states that using a VPN in India is legal. A separate MeitY order dated April 2026 addresses something different: due-diligence obligations that VPN providers and intermediaries have under Indian IT rules concerning unlawful content. The order specifically refers to blocked prediction-market and betting sites. It does not, on its own, establish that all personal VPN use is prohibited, and a VPN does not make an unlawful activity lawful or guarantee access to blocked services. This is a summary of published sources, not legal advice.
Read the MeitY order directly at the MeitY order PDF if the question affects your use.
The five providers to check
These five are the shortlist for an Indian IP address. The order is not a ranking. Providers are listed by how well their India routing is documented in primary sources, and the last two are candidates that this guide has not confirmed against provider documentation.

NordVPN
NordVPN’s support article on India servers answers the question directly: it has no physical servers in India, and it offers a single virtual location that presents an Indian IP. Choose it if you want one clearly labelled option and accept that the hardware is elsewhere.

Proton’s India server page lists Smart Routing as the route to an Indian IP, with servers physically in Singapore. Proton also lists Indian TV and streaming among intended uses, while stating that this is not a guarantee of access. In its announcement dated 22 September 2022, Proton author Douglas Crawford wrote: “To protect the privacy of the Proton community, we are removing our VPN servers physically located in India.” The page identifies him as an author and gives no corporate title, so that is how he should be cited.
Surfshark
Surfshark’s India servers page currently labels its Indian locations as virtual. Its 2022 announcement said it would close its physical India servers and introduce virtual India locations hosted in Singapore, the Netherlands, and London. That list is older than the current page, so confirm the present routing for any location before relying on it.

ExpressVPN and PureVPN
Both appear in 2026 editorial comparisons, including those from Security.org, Top10VPN, and TechRadar. Those outlets do not agree on a single winner, and their methods differ. This guide has not confirmed either provider’s India routing, pricing, or audit status against its own documentation, so check their primary pages before drawing conclusions.
Criteria to check before you pay
A fair comparison of these providers needs the same measurements for each one. The sources reviewed do not supply them, so this guide does not rank providers on price or speed. Check each of the following on the provider’s own pages:
- Full-term price and renewal price, with the billing term stated, because introductory rates often differ from renewals.
- Refund window and conditions.
- Server routing for each India location, including the disclosed host country.
- Independent no-logs audit: the auditing firm and the date of the audit.
- Privacy policy and the jurisdiction the provider operates under.
- Device limits and supported platforms.
- Speed measured from the city or region you will actually use.
- Streaming results for the specific service you need, with the date of the test.
- Free-plan limitations, if you intend to use one. None of the free options reviewed offer an India location.
How to get an Indian IP address
- Install the provider’s official app and sign in to an account that has the India location available. For Proton VPN, the virtual India locations require a paid plan.
- Open the app’s server or location list and search for “India.” Note whether the location is labelled virtual, or whether it is a Smart Routing option that routes through another country.
- Connect to the location and check the resulting IP address with an IP lookup tool. The country shown should be India. Also check the reported host or city where the lookup tool locates the server.
- Test the service you need after connecting. An Indian IP is a condition for some services, not a guarantee of access.
Menu labels differ between app versions and platforms, so use the wording the app shows you rather than assuming these exact names.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
What an Indian IP does and does not do
An Indian IP helps with services that expect a connection to come from India, including Indian streaming. It does not override the rules of the service itself. Catalog rights differ by title and by region, an account may be restricted by the country it was registered in, and each streaming service’s terms still apply. Proton’s India page presents Indian TV and streaming as an intended use, not as a universal guarantee.
If an Indian service still blocks you
- Confirm that the IP lookup shows India. If it shows another country, the app may have connected you to a different location.
- Try another India location if the provider offers more than one, since routing can differ between servers.
- Check whether the streaming service requires an account registered in India, or a payment method or phone number from India.
- Clear the app’s session or log out and back in, then reconnect.
- Contact the provider’s support with the location name, the time of the attempt, and the service’s error message.
If none of this works, the block may come from the service’s licensing or account rules rather than from your IP address, and a different provider is unlikely to change that.
The Bottom Line
If you need an Indian IP address in 2026, shortlist providers whose India location is clearly documented, then check the price, renewal, refund, routing, and audit details on each provider’s own pages before buying. NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Surfshark publish specific routing information, so start there. Treat editorial rankings as leads only, because their methods differ and none of the sources reviewed provide a comparable price or speed measurement for all five providers.
