If you want a video meeting platform beyond the familiar names, start by matching the tool to how people will join and who will manage it. Jitsi Meet and Whereby emphasize easy guest access; Zoho Meeting is a conventional cloud service with a published free tier; Nextcloud Talk suits teams already invested in Nextcloud; and BigBlueButton focuses on online teaching. “Overlooked” is an editorial description, not a measured ranking: these five are alternatives to consider, not proven market leaders or universal winners.
How to choose among these meeting platforms
Consider the people joining, the person responsible for setup, and the work the meeting needs to support. A browser link may matter most for occasional guests; deployment control may matter more to an organization with its own administrators. For classrooms, purpose-built teaching tools can outweigh a general-purpose meeting interface.

- Guest access: Whereby emphasizes joining in a browser without downloads. Jitsi’s hosted service can be used without an account.
- Administration: Jitsi offers a self-hosting route, while Nextcloud Talk sits within the Nextcloud environment. Either choice involves different administrative responsibilities from simply signing up for a cloud meeting service.
- Teaching and collaboration: BigBlueButton is the education-centered option here. Nextcloud Talk combines calls with chat and webinars; Zoho Meeting offers meetings and webinars.
- Limits: Check participant caps, time limits, and deployment capacity against your actual meeting size and use case. A published limit for one plan or private installation is not a universal guarantee.
Platforms to consider
Jitsi Meet: account-free access with a self-hosting option
Jitsi describes Meet as free, open-source conferencing software that does not require an account. You can use the hosted service at meet.jit.si, download its mobile apps, set up your own instance, or embed a room in a website, according to the Jitsi User FAQ. The FAQ puts the simplest route plainly: “The easiest way is to go to meet.jit.si or download one of the mobile apps (Android or iOS).”
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
That combination makes Jitsi worth considering if you want to try a meeting without asking guests to create accounts, or if your organization wants to explore hosting its own service. Self-hosting also means taking responsibility for deployment and administration; the available product information does not establish that every configuration has the same security, capacity, or feature behavior.

Jitsi’s homepage lists project updates dated July 14, August 20, and September 2, 2026, concerning transcription architecture, distributed tracing, and document picture-in-picture for browser meetings. These are evidence of project activity, not a promise that every feature is available to every user.
Zoho Meeting: a conventional cloud option with a stated free tier
Zoho’s product page advertises a free tier for meetings of up to 100 participants and 60 minutes, with video conferencing and secure screen sharing. The same page lists paid features including multiple co-hosts, international dial-in, recording, and storage. Check the live Zoho Meeting page for current terms before choosing a plan, since these limits and features can change.

The page also displayed a starting price of $1 per month billed annually when accessed in 2026; local taxes may apply. Treat that as a time-sensitive advertised starting figure, not a universal total cost or a like-for-like price comparison. Zoho may fit teams seeking a familiar hosted meetings-and-webinars product with a visible free option.

Whereby presents its meetings as browser-based, with no downloads required. That can reduce friction when inviting people who do not regularly use your organization’s meeting software. Review the current Whereby Meetings pricing page for plan limits and host requirements; the available information does not establish enough context to state a dependable participant cap.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Prioritize this option when simple guest access matters, then confirm that the current plan supports your expected call size and features. A no-download joining experience does not by itself mean every capability is available on every plan.
Nextcloud Talk: calls alongside chat and webinars
Nextcloud presents Talk as a communications and collaboration tool for meetings, chat, and webinars, with web and mobile apps. It may suit organizations already using Nextcloud or those that want calls within a broader collaboration environment. Its Talk page gives a qualified capacity guideline for a typical private setup: calls with around 6–10 participants, potentially up to 20 when everyone has a good network connection and video is not used. This is guidance for that kind of private deployment, not a hard limit or guarantee for every installation.

Nextcloud says webinars and public video conferencing require the Talk High Performance Backend. An administrator should assess deployment and capacity needs before relying on Talk for larger or public events; the product information cited here does not establish a universal hosting recipe or cost.
BigBlueButton: education-focused tools for online classes
BigBlueButton is the teaching-oriented choice in this group. A TechRadar roundup dated January 21, 2026 reports features including audio, video, presentation and desktop sharing; a multi-user whiteboard; breakout rooms; shared notes; polls; and chat. Those classroom tools make it more specific than a general meeting service, but the feature description is from a secondary source.

The same roundup characterizes setup as difficult.
