For a pocketable camera with a wide zoom range, consider the Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 (called TZ99 in some markets). For a larger sensor and less reach, look at the Panasonic LUMIX ZS300/TZ300. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 V is a long-zoom alternative, but its form factor is a different carry proposition. Two older or less readily available options—the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III and Panasonic ZS200—are worth considering only if their current availability and specific features suit your trip.
Which type of camera is best for traveling?
A travel zoom is designed to cover wide scenes and distant details with one built-in lens, so you can frame a city street, a landscape and a faraway landmark without changing lenses. The trade-off is that small, long-zoom cameras often use smaller sensors than larger cameras; that can limit low-light performance and dynamic range. A larger camera can offer different advantages, but may be less convenient to carry all day.

Start with the scenes you expect to photograph. For distant subjects, compare the full 35mm-equivalent focal range—not just the zoom multiplier. For indoor sights or evening scenes, sensor size and lens brightness matter. Then check the camera’s weight, stabilization, autofocus behavior, viewfinder and screen: those details can affect whether it is comfortable and practical on your trip.

This is a buyer-fit shortlist, not a ranking from a single controlled test. The available evidence is strongest for the first three cameras. The final two appear as alternatives in a current compact-camera guide, but the cited material does not establish enough detail to recommend them over the better-documented options.
#1 Best Overall
- Exceptional Zoom for Distant Detail: A 15x optical zoom captures distant subjects in crisp detail at concerts, sports events, and travel destinations. A high-performance Leica-standard lens covers an impressive focal range from 24mm to 360mm telephoto.
- 4K Video & Photo Quality: 4K video recording allows breathtaking travel scenes to be rendered with true-to-life details. 4K photo mode with 30fps captures fast-moving scenes and saves the perfect moment later as a high-resolution still.
- Low Light Reliability: Larger sensor (20.1MP) captures more light and delivers bright, detailed images in dimly lit conditions. A built-in flash helps capture bright, sharp images. Advanced image stabilization delivers clear photos & videos without blur.
- Get Creative with Ease: AF macro focuses as close as 1.18 inches at the wide end. Choose from 22 filter effects. Pocket-sized design fits easily in bags or large pockets.
- Share and Charge with Ease: Using the Panasonic Image App, pair the camera with your smartphone via Bluetooth and transfer photos and videos over Wi-Fi. A USB Type-C cable enables easy charging from AC adapters and power banks.
1. Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 / TZ99: choose reach in a pocketable body
The ZS99, known as the TZ99 in some markets, has a 30x optical zoom covering 24–720mm equivalent, according to Digital Camera World’s 2026 camera guide. Its combination of reach and pocketable design suits travelers who want one camera for both broad views and faraway details. It also includes 4K video, 4K Photo modes, a stabilized lens, a tilting touchscreen and a built-in electronic viewfinder.
The compromises are important: the small sensor limits low-light performance and dynamic range, the lens is not especially bright at the long end, and background blur is limited. It is a reach-first choice, not a guarantee of strong results in dim interiors or at night. Check the model name used in your market before shopping, since listings may use ZS99 or TZ99.

- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging

2. Panasonic LUMIX ZS300 / TZ300: choose a 1-inch sensor and 15x zoom
The ZS300/TZ300 is a pocket-sized compact with a 1.0-type sensor and 15x zoom. Panasonic’s March 24, 2026 announcement specifies a Leica-certified 24–360mm-equivalent lens and approximately 20.1 megapixels. The shorter range than the ZS99/TZ99 may be a better fit if you want a larger sensor and do not need as much telephoto reach.
Panasonic lists 4K video at 3840 × 2160, high-speed Full HD at 120 frames per second, 4K Photo at 30 frames per second, POWER O.I.S., 5-axis HYBRID O.I.S.+ for video, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and USB Type-C charging in its TZ300 announcement. Its UK product specifications give approximate dimensions of 111.2 × 66.4 × 45.2 mm and a weight of 337 g with battery and SD card (295 g body-only).

Check the handling trade-offs before choosing it: RTINGS’ travel-camera guide, updated September 29, 2026, says the ZS300 lacks the viewfinder found on the earlier ZS200, has a fixed screen and uses contrast-based autofocus that may lose tracked subjects. These are practical considerations if you frame in bright sun, often shoot from awkward angles or rely on subject tracking.
Panasonic announced European black and grey versions planned from early May 2026 at launch RRPs of €999 and £869. Those are dated launch prices, not current offers or confirmation of stock. Check the local model name, availability and price before buying.

- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB

3. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 V: choose a long-zoom camera if its size suits you
DPReview’s 2026 compact zoom guide identifies the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 V as its best long-zoom compact and lists a 20MP Type-1 sensor with a 24–600mm-equivalent f/2.4–4.0 lens. Its zoom range reaches farther than the TZ300’s, while its listed maximum aperture gives a useful point of comparison when judging lens brightness. Do not assume it is pocketable: consider it a long-zoom alternative whose larger carry needs may make it less convenient for some trips.

RTINGS says the ZS300 replaced this Canon as its mid-range compact travel-camera pick because the Canon had become difficult to find at reasonable prices. That is a statement about the guide’s selection, not a claim that every retailer lacks stock. The cited material does not provide a current price or enough specifications to compare it fairly here. Check current availability and the camera’s exact features before treating it as an alternative.
Best Value
- 52x Optical Zoom Camera: Reach distant subjects with a 24mm wide angle lens spanning sweeping landscapes to tight telephoto shots of birds, wildlife, and athletes; genuine optical sharpness, not a digital crop
- 6fps Burst Mode: Catch the decisive moment in fast action; 6fps shooting captures rapid sequences of wildlife and sports, then review on the 3in LCD and keep the sharpest frame
- 16MP BSI CMOS Sensor: Sharp, detailed images with better low-light performance; built-in OIS counters hand movement even at full 52x reach, so handheld telephoto shots stay crisp without a tripod
- Built-in Wi-Fi: Share straight from the field; connect to your phone or tablet to transfer photos and post immediately, or use the phone as a live remote viewfinder; 1080p Full HD video records smooth sequences
- Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery: Power extended sessions in the field; accepts Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 1.5TB for thousands of photos and hours of Full HD video across a full day of shooting
5. Panasonic LUMIX ZS200: an older model to compare carefully
The ZS200 is mentioned in RTINGS’ comparison as the earlier model whose viewfinder the ZS300 omits. The available material does not establish its current stock, price or full specifications, so it is not possible to make a complete head-to-head recommendation. If you find one, verify the listing and compare its viewfinder and other features with the newer camera before deciding.

|---|---|---|---|
| Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 / TZ99 | 30x; 24–720mm equivalent; small sensor (Digital Camera World, 2026) | Pocketable; tilting touchscreen and built-in EVF; stabilized lens | Travelers prioritizing a broad focal range in a compact body |
| Panasonic LUMIX ZS300 / TZ300 | 15x; 24–360mm equivalent; 1.0-type sensor, approximately 20.1MP (Panasonic, March 24, 2026) | Pocket-sized; fixed screen and no viewfinder (RTINGS, updated September 29, 2026); 337 g with battery and SD card per Panasonic UK | Travelers who prefer a 1-inch sensor and can work without a viewfinder or tilting screen |

What to check before you buy
- Focal range: Look at the equivalent wide and telephoto focal lengths. The wide end affects how much of a street or landscape fits in the frame; the long end helps with distant details.
- Sensor and lens: Sensor size is a useful clue, not a complete prediction of image quality. For dim scenes, also consider lens brightness and whether you can keep the camera steady.
- Stabilization and autofocus: Stabilization helps manage camera movement, while autofocus tracking affects moving subjects. Manufacturer feature lists are not the same as independent performance tests.
- Viewfinder and screen: A viewfinder can make framing easier in bright conditions; a tilting screen helps with high or low angles. Decide which, if either, you need.
- Travel load: Compare complete carry weight and dimensions, not just the word “compact.” A camera that stays in your bag may be less useful than a less capable one you are happy to carry.
- Video and charging: Match resolution and frame-rate options to what you plan to record, and check charging connections if you rely on a particular cable or power bank.
- Regional model and listing: Confirm whether the local name is ZS99 or TZ99, or ZS300 or TZ300. Check the exact seller, stock, included accessories, warranty and current price; launch RRPs do not establish today’s retail price.
Bottom line
Choose the Panasonic ZS99/TZ99 if maximum reach in a pocketable travel zoom matters most. Choose the ZS300/TZ300 if you prefer its 1-inch sensor and 15x range and can accept its fixed screen and lack of a viewfinder. Consider the Sony RX10 V when long reach outweighs the convenience of a smaller carry. Treat the Canon G7 X Mark III and Panasonic ZS200 as conditional alternatives until you verify a specific current listing and its fit for your trip.
