The best way to prepare for a salon visit is to follow your stylist’s instructions—not a one-size-fits-all rule. Before your appointment, avoid these five habits: guessing about when to wash, piling on heavy products, withholding your hair history, treating reference photos as guarantees, and staying silent if you’ll be late. Salon guidance varies by service, so ask if anything is unclear.
1. Stop assuming every appointment needs the same wash routine
There isn’t one washing rule that works for every service or salon. For example, JEX Salon Austin generally asks clients to arrive with clean, fully dry hair, but advises against washing within 24 hours of a color appointment. Urban Betty recommends washing 12–24 hours before color and says haircut clients do not need to shampoo beforehand. JUUT suggests washing on the day of or day before a haircut unless the salon says otherwise.
Those are salon-specific recommendations, not a universal standard. Color, a haircut, a scalp treatment, an updo, or a protective-style transition may call for different preparation. Ordinary natural oil is also different from heavy product residue. If you’re not sure whether to wash, ask your salon what it wants for your particular service rather than arriving with deliberately dirty hair—or shampooing immediately beforehand by default.
2. Stop piling on heavy products before color or precision work
Heavy oils, dry shampoo, and styling-product buildup can be a concern before some appointments, particularly color services. JEX Salon Austin asks clients to avoid heavy oils, dry shampoo, and buildup; Urban Betty similarly cautions against heavy dry shampoo or product buildup for color. Hairstylist Kelly Moreno Vindel also advises avoiding heavy products near the roots before color in her preparation guidance.

This is practical salon advice, not a medical rule that every product must be removed before every service. Follow your salon’s directions, and mention what you have on your hair if you’re unsure. You don’t need to buy a special product to prepare.
3. Stop leaving out your hair’s chemical and color history
Tell your stylist what has been done to your hair, even if it happened at home or some time ago. Color and chemical history can help the stylist assess what is suitable for your hair and plan the service. Vindel recommends mentioning box dye, at-home bleach or lightening, henna or metallic dyes, keratin or Brazilian blowout treatments, and medications before color. JUUT also encourages clients to discuss allergies, damage, and recent chemical treatments.

Include older color if it may still be on the hair, and be candid if you don’t remember a product or treatment exactly. This is useful information for a consultation, not a confession; you can also ask the salon in advance whether it would like details or photos before you arrive.
4. Stop treating an inspiration photo as a guaranteed result
A reference photo helps communicate what you mean, but it cannot promise an identical result. Your hair’s texture, length, condition, and the practical demands of the style all matter. Instead of handing over one image as an exact instruction, point out the details you like—such as the length, layers, shape, or texture—and explain what you would not want.

JUUT recommends identifying what appeals in a reference and sharing examples of what you dislike. Hairstylist Michael Douglas told Woman & Home, “For me personally, I would love to see your idea of what you would like,” adding, “Pictures are brilliant.” He suggests bringing two or three photos, ideally showing different people, so the stylist can see which features you’re drawn to. Use them to start a conversation about what will suit your hair and lifestyle.

If you’re running late, contact the salon as soon as you can rather than assuming the appointment can proceed unchanged. Taylor & York Salon advises clients to get in touch; depending on the salon’s policy, timing, and service, the appointment may be shortened, adjusted, or rescheduled.

Policies differ, so a quick message or call is more useful than guessing what the salon will do. If your plans change before the day, let the salon know promptly.

A simple way to prepare
- Check the salon’s instructions for your specific service, especially about washing and products.
- Be ready to describe your hair’s color and chemical history, including treatments you had at home.
- Bring a few reference photos and explain what you like in them, as well as what you want to avoid.
- Contact the salon if you’ll be late or need to change your plans.
