Smart lighting, a speaker or display, a video doorbell, a thermostat, and either a smart lock or a safety device can support common family routines. They are options, not essentials for every household: choose based on the problem you want to solve, your home’s existing equipment, your smart-home platform, your children’s ages, and your privacy preferences.
How to choose devices that fit your family
Start with a routine or household problem, not a shopping list. A bedtime lighting schedule, an easier way to notice a visitor, and a need to manage entry are different jobs—and may call for different devices or no connected device at all.

Before buying, check the product’s compatibility with the platform you already use, whether it needs a hub, and whether your Wi-Fi reaches the intended location. Google Home lists lighting, speakers and displays, doorbells and cameras, thermostats, locks, and smoke or carbon monoxide alarms as smart-home categories. Its guide also notes that Matter devices need a compatible hub for setup, control, and automation while away from home; Matter support alone does not guarantee every feature will work with your setup. - Home fit: Check wiring, existing doorbell or HVAC equipment, network coverage, and any hub or accessory requirements.
- Child use: Consider whether children can reach or operate the device, how it behaves when slow or offline, and what adult supervision is appropriate.
- Privacy and security: Review what information it collects and shares, app permissions, camera and microphone controls, passwords, and the manufacturer’s security-update commitment.
- Ongoing cost: Check whether useful recordings, alerts, or other features require a subscription, and whether continued software support is stated.
1. Smart bulbs or switches for predictable lighting
Connected lights can make a scheduled or voice-activated bedroom light part of a morning or bedtime routine. A bulb is often the simpler choice when you want to change one fixture; a switch may suit a room where controlling several lights together is more useful. Confirm that the specific bulb or switch works with your platform and that its controls are appropriate for the children who may use it.

A 2021 qualitative study hosted by the Federal Trade Commission reports parents describing children turning on smart lights in their bedrooms. Those examples show how children may interact with connected devices; they do not establish that every family needs smart lighting or that a particular product is suitable for every age. 2. A smart speaker or display for voice and visible controls
A compatible speaker can provide a voice interface for lights and other devices. A display can also show controls or alerts, which may help when a visual interface is preferable. Check which devices and features work together on your chosen platform rather than assuming that every product with a voice assistant can control every connected device.

Decide where the speaker or display belongs in the home. Review microphone and, if present, camera settings; understand what data is collected and shared; and use available privacy controls. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office advises consumers to check product privacy features, app permissions, data practices, and security-update support. Its guidance page says it is under review following changes to UK law, so treat it as consumer advice rather than an unchanging legal interpretation. ICO guidance on smart products

A video doorbell may let household members see or receive an alert when someone is at the door. Before choosing one, check whether it needs existing wiring or runs on a battery, whether it can ring an in-home chime, and which recording or alert features depend on a paid plan. These details vary by product and ecosystem.

4. A smart thermostat for app-based climate control
A connected thermostat can add app or platform control over home heating or cooling. Check compatibility with your HVAC equipment before buying, along with the device’s installation requirements and ongoing software support. Do not treat app control as a substitute for sensible temperature settings or adult oversight.

Connected controls can be affected by software problems: the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) gives a thermostat reset as an example of a software error changing a household setting. 5. A smart lock or a safety device—choose for the actual need
These solve different problems, so treat them as alternatives rather than a single interchangeable category. A smart lock may help a household manage access; a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm addresses a separate safety need. Choose the one that fits the situation, check installation requirements, and understand what happens if the network or power fails.
For a lock, consider how household members will enter if the connected features are unavailable and whether children should have access to its controls. For an alarm, prioritize a functioning safety device and follow its installation and maintenance instructions. A smart-home app, camera, lock, thermostat, or speaker is not a replacement for adult supervision, a working smoke or CO alarm, or a safe plan for an offline device.
Plan for privacy, updates, and connection problems
Connected devices rely on software and network services as well as their physical components. The ACCC advises checking network and software requirements, update support, and the device’s physical condition; it also recommends keeping devices away from hazards and out of children’s reach, or following age restrictions and supervision guidance. This is Australian consumer-safety guidance, not a statement of law in every country.
The ICO recommends checking the information a smart product collects and shares, its privacy controls and app permissions, its security-update support, and the strength of passwords. Because cameras, microphones, locks, and other connected controls can expose sensitive information or affect routines, weigh those settings alongside convenience rather than treating privacy as an afterthought.
A practical pre-purchase check
- Name the job. Identify the routine or household issue the device should address.
- Verify compatibility. Check the exact model’s platform support, hub requirement, and feature limits; do not rely on a category label or Matter support alone.
- Check the installation. Confirm wiring, HVAC or doorbell compatibility, network coverage, and any additional equipment.
- Review child access and fallback. Decide who may use the controls, what supervision is needed, and how the household will manage if the device is offline.
- Review privacy and support. Examine data practices, permissions, security controls, update commitments, and any recurring charge for features you intend to use.
