People may cancel Apple Music because it costs more than they think it is worth, they do not use it enough, a trial or discount ends, another service suits their listening habits better, or they worry about moving playlists and library items. But there is no verified representative study establishing five leading reasons Apple Music subscribers cancel. The strongest available evidence concerns music streaming services generally, so these are useful factors to consider—not an Apple Music churn ranking.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said cancellation data was limited and that its findings suggested affordability and insufficient use were among the most cited reasons for leaving music-streaming services. It also cautioned that only a small proportion of cancellers responded to the survey. The CMA reported monthly cancellation above 4% among the major music-streaming services it studied in 2022; that figure is neither Apple Music’s current cancellation rate nor a current estimate for every service.

A 2025 YouGov survey asked US consumers about streaming services broadly, not Apple Music or music alone. Of respondents who had cancelled at least one streaming service, 66% cited cost; 26% said they had already watched the content they were interested in, and 15% cited switching to another platform. The latter responses should not be read as music-specific explanations. The figures help describe wider subscription decisions, not Apple Music subscriber behavior. YouGov’s report says the survey was conducted September 9, 2025, and published September 18, 2025.

1. The price no longer feels worthwhile
Affordability is one of the clearest general reasons in the available music-streaming cancellation evidence. A person may decide that the monthly fee does not match how often they listen or the features they use. In YouGov’s US survey, cost was the most commonly cited reason among people who had cancelled a streaming service, but that finding covers streaming subscriptions generally and does not measure Apple Music cancellations.

A 2024 study of freemium services also recorded cancellation explanations involving cost and low perceived value of a paid tier. Those responses show that value is a real subscription decision dimension; they do not establish how often Apple Music subscribers leave for that reason. The study in Review of Managerial Science also identifies trial expiry and loss of a student discount as reported cancellation explanations.
2. They do not use it enough
A subscription can remain active even when someone rarely opens it. The CMA identified insufficient use as another common reason in the limited music-service cancellation data it reviewed. That is a plausible trigger for reviewing a recurring payment, but there is no Apple Music-specific prevalence figure here.

YouGov’s finding that some streaming subscribers keep subscriptions despite recent nonuse illustrates why people may reassess recurring services; its scope is streaming categories overall, not music listening in particular.

Someone who subscribed during a free trial may cancel when the trial period ends rather than begin paying. A student may also leave when they are no longer eligible for a discounted plan. The 2024 freemium-services study records trial expiry and the loss of a student discount among cancellation explanations, but does not establish how common either trigger is for Apple Music.

These are subscription lifecycle events, not necessarily judgments that the service has become worse. Before cancelling, check the terms and eligibility of the plan in your region; prices and offers can vary and change.
4. Another service feels like a better fit for discovery
Streaming catalogues are broadly similar, so services also compete on listening experience, including personalized playlists and discovery. A listener who prefers another service’s recommendations or app experience may switch even if both offer much of the same music.

A 2024 Harris Poll / QuestBrand comparison of US adults aged 25–34 who were familiar with both brands found Spotify over-indexed relative to Apple Music on the attributes “Premium” (+14.5) and “Fun” (+9.3), while Apple Music over-indexed on “Traditional” (+5.7). These are brand-attribute differences, not percentages of users, measures of recommendation quality, or evidence that personalization caused cancellations. The brand comparison is perception evidence for that specified group, not a verdict on which service is better for every listener.

5. Switching seems inconvenient because of playlists and library continuity
Leaving can feel costly if someone expects to lose carefully built playlists or have to rebuild a library. The CMA noted that concern about losing favorite playlists can make switching between music services challenging. It also pointed to playlist portability as an emerging category; the report does not establish that Apple Music deletes playlists when someone cancels, or that continuity is a leading cause of Apple Music cancellations.
Before switching, identify what you want to preserve—such as playlists, saved albums, or listening history—and check what can be transferred or recreated. Availability and behavior depend on the services and tools involved, so do not assume that every part of a library will move intact.

- Check your actual use: Consider how often you listen and whether the subscription is serving a regular need.
- Compare value, not just the monthly fee: Weigh the plan’s cost against the features and listening experience you personally use. Confirm current regional pricing and plan eligibility directly before making a decision.
- Separate a temporary trigger from a lasting preference: A trial ending or discount expiring is different from deciding that the service does not suit you.
- Try the alternative before relying on assumptions: Compare discovery, app experience, audio options, catalogue availability, and the effort required to move playlists or saved music.
Why there is no definitive five-reason Apple Music ranking
The available evidence combines a UK regulator’s limited music-streaming cancellation data, a US survey about streaming services in general, academic research on freemium-service cancellations, and a brand-perception comparison. None provides a representative ranking of why Apple Music subscribers specifically cancel. Apple-specific interface, discovery, or continuity complaints should therefore be treated as individual experiences unless supported by broader measurement.
