It is not invisible to Android—any keyboard can access the field you are editing—but FlorisBoard’s published policy says persisted personal data never leaves the device. That makes it a meaningful privacy choice for users who want an alternative to cloud-connected keyboards, provided they accept that the project is still beta software.
What FlorisBoard is—and what “private” means here
FlorisBoard is a free, open-source Android input method aimed at being modern, customizable and privacy-respecting. The project currently describes it as beta software. F-Droid’s 2025 listing records version 0.5.2 and an Android 8.0-or-newer requirement.

A keyboard necessarily sits at a sensitive boundary. While active, FlorisBoard can access the focused text field and clipboard; depending on enabled features, it can also use the system dictionary. Its privacy policy, last modified March 2, 2026, says accessed personal data is kept locally in memory or private app storage and that persisted data is never shared or leaves the device. Local handling reduces transmission exposure, but it does not remove risks from Android, other installed apps, a compromised device or the text field itself.
1. Sensitive typing context can stay local
The strongest reason to switch is control over where keyboard data goes. FlorisBoard’s policy states: “No. Any personal data that is persisted is stored locally and never leaves your device.” In practical terms, text context used by the keyboard, clipboard content it accesses and retained personalization are not described as being uploaded to a remote service.

This is a qualified privacy improvement, not a promise that the keyboard never sees what you type. An input method must read enough context to provide editing, autocorrection and other enabled functions. Users handling passwords or confidential material should still use password fields and the application’s own security controls rather than assuming any keyboard is risk-free.
2. The code is open for inspection
FlorisBoard publishes its source repository, issue tracker, release information, dependencies and Apache-2.0 license. That gives security-minded users and reviewers something concrete to inspect, build and discuss instead of requiring blind trust in a closed binary.

Open source is an accountability advantage, not an absolute security guarantee. A project can still contain bugs, an outdated dependency or a mismatch between source and a distributed build. Check the project’s release notes and distribution channel when deciding whether a particular build is appropriate for you.

3. Personalization does not require a cloud profile
Spell checking, suggestions and glide typing can learn from your typing behavior. FlorisBoard says the resulting personalization is saved locally. Its policy also says typing-behavior tracking stops in incognito mode or when no enabled feature requires it.

This creates a useful balance: suggestions can improve over time without creating a server-side typing profile. Incognito mode is the appropriate setting when you do not want learning for a particular session. Remember that enabling more features gives the keyboard more local context to process, so review the feature switches rather than treating “privacy” as a single on/off setting.
4. Privacy does not mean giving up everyday controls
A privacy keyboard is only practical if it works for the way you type. F-Droid lists extensive Latin layouts and language subtypes, themes with day/night switching, number layouts, special characters, emoji and one-handed or compact modes. Those options let you reduce visual clutter, reach keys with one hand or keep a familiar layout while changing the data-handling model.

Coverage is not universal. F-Droid specifically notes more limited support for non-Latin languages than for its Latin coverage. Check your language and required layout before making FlorisBoard your only keyboard. If you rely on a specialized script, dictionary or gesture behavior, test those functions in real messages and documents.

5. Installation channels put distribution in your hands
The project documents several routes: F-Droid, GitHub release downloads and Google Play testing. F-Droid’s listing identifies version 0.5.2 from the FlorisBoard project in 2025 and requires Android 8.0 or newer. Version numbers and availability can change, so verify the current release page before installing.

- Check compatibility: confirm that the phone runs Android 8.0 or later and that your language and layout needs are supported.
- Choose a source: install through F-Droid, use a project release download, or join the documented Google Play testing route. Prefer a source you can update consistently.
- Enable the input method: open Android’s keyboard settings, add or enable FlorisBoard, then select it as the current keyboard.
- Review permissions and features: inspect clipboard access, dictionary use, suggestions, glide typing and personalization settings. Turn off anything you do not need.
- Test before removing your old keyboard: try your main languages, autocorrection, emoji, numbers, one-handed mode and any password-manager workflow.
Android’s exact menu labels vary by manufacturer; look under Settings, System (or General management) and Keyboard or On-screen keyboard if the wording differs.
What you give up by switching
- Maturity: FlorisBoard is still labeled beta, so behavior and feature availability may change.
- Language breadth: non-Latin support is more limited than Latin support according to the F-Droid listing.
- Cloud conveniences: a local-first design may not provide the same account synchronization or server-backed learning some users expect.
- Absolute guarantees: local storage does not protect against a compromised operating system, malicious apps or someone with access to the unlocked device.
Is FlorisBoard safe for your phone?
“Safe” depends on the threat you are trying to reduce. Its open source, local-retention policy and on-device personalization make it a credible option for limiting keyboard-data transmission. They do not establish independent security testing, prove zero telemetry in every build or guarantee support for every language. Read the current policy and release information, install from a trusted channel and keep Android updated.
