Some older electronics can still be useful finds—but only when the exact model, condition and intended use line up. Classic iPods, Nintendo Wii consoles, Apple AirPort Express units, older Kindles and OpenWrt-compatible routers are worth considering, not automatic bargains. Check compatibility and repair costs before paying; a low sticker price can be misleading.
How to judge an old gadget before you buy
Start with the job you want the device to do, then verify that the specific model can still do it. Compare the model or revision, physical condition, included accessories, software or service support, availability of compatible replacement parts and likely repair cost. Nostalgia and original retail price do not tell you whether a used device is a good buy today.

- Ask for the exact model and revision; look up compatibility before visiting or making an offer.
- Inspect the device in person when possible. Check screens, buttons, controls, drives, cables and included accessories relevant to that model.
- Ask whether it has been modified, repaired or tested, and whether the seller has its instructions or accessories.
- For connected devices, confirm the intended function still works with your current services and equipment.
- Check for recalls and factor any replacement parts or repairs into the total cost.
1. Classic iPod: a candidate for repair or modification
A classic iPod may be worth buying if you want a dedicated music player and the particular model supports the changes you have in mind. Some models can take a replacement battery or flash-storage upgrade, and Rockbox can add supported audio formats and features. Those options are not universal: identify the model first, then confirm that the specific battery, storage upgrade and Rockbox support match it.

2. Nintendo Wii: check the revision and disc drive
The Wii has a substantial game library, and community-made homebrew can support additional uses. Homebrew is not endorsed by Nintendo; do not assume every console or setup will support the same modifications.
If playing GameCube discs or using GameCube hardware compatibility matters to you, look for the original RVL-001 revision. Later Wii revisions dropped that hardware compatibility. Before buying, check that the disc drive reads a game and that the included controllers work; missing or faulty controllers can add to the real cost.
3. Apple AirPort Express: a possible audio source, not a modern router pick
An AirPort Express can still be useful as an AirPlay source for powered speakers, an amplifier or older stereo equipment with a compatible input. Its 3.5 mm output supports analog or optical audio, but you will need receiving equipment that matches your setup. Its value here is as an audio device, not as a recommendation for a modern router.

AirPlay generation depends on the exact hardware and firmware. How-To Geek’s October 5, 2026 article describes AirPlay 2 as requiring an 802.11n AirPort Express running firmware 7.8 or later; older models support original AirPlay. Verify the model and firmware, and confirm that your audio equipment can use the output before buying. How-To Geek’s article syndicated by Yahoo Tech
4. Older Kindle: check service access and the screen
An older Kindle may still suit a reader who mainly wants to read books already on the device or can use a supported way to load content. But some older models have lost the ability to buy or download Kindle library books, use Send to Kindle or re-register after a factory reset. Check the status of the exact model and your intended account and library use before paying—especially if the device has been reset.
Inspect the screen for damage. Some owners may consider unofficial modifications, such as jailbreaking a model that is supported and using alternative software such as KOReader. These are not Amazon-supported features, and neither compatibility nor ease of setup should be assumed. Confirm that the model and modification fit your needs before treating them as a reason to buy.

In the United States, the CPSC says its laws apply to yard-sale and flea-market sellers and provides resale and recall resources. It also says resellers are not required to test used products for safety, although they cannot knowingly sell hazardous or noncompliant products. A seller’s statement that an item was not tested is therefore not proof that it is safe. CPSC guide for resellers · CPSC used-product safety information
Which finds are worth pursuing?
| Gadget | Best fit | Most important check |
|---|---|---|
| Classic iPod | Dedicated music player or supported upgrade project | Exact model, screen, click wheel and compatibility of intended upgrades |
| Nintendo Wii | Wii games, or GameCube hardware compatibility on the original revision | RVL-001 if GameCube compatibility matters; disc drive and controllers |
| Apple AirPort Express | AirPlay audio for compatible speakers or stereo equipment | Hardware, firmware, AirPlay generation and receiving audio equipment |
| Older Kindle | Reading with a verified model and workable content access | Model-specific service status, screen and re-registration needs |
| OpenWrt-compatible router | A specific networking task with confirmed software support | Exact model and revision, current OpenWrt support and available memory |
These are practical-use candidates, not guaranteed reliable purchases or resale opportunities. If the seller cannot provide the model, you cannot verify the feature you need, or likely repairs erase the savings, walk away.
