For a practical shortlist, start with the Sony WH-1000XM6, Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), Apple AirPods Max 2, and Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless—but treat the last two differently: the available current-generation review evidence is thinner for the Sennheiser, and Apple’s strongest fit is for people already using Apple devices.
This guide separates Sony’s specifications from reviewers’ judgments and uses TechRadar’s published ANC test scores only as a narrow, attributed comparison—not a universal measure of headphone quality. Prices and availability can change by region and date.

How to read this shortlist
A “best” ranking depends on what is being tested. Tom’s Guide’s October 2026 guide names the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S3 as its main pick and lists the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) as alternatives. TechRadar’s comparison reports close ANC scores for the second-generation Bose and first-generation model, with the Sony XM6 close behind. Consumer Reports’ 2026 table includes older Sony generations. Those are different editorial choices and test contexts, not one shared top-five result.
The five entries below are therefore a use-case shortlist, not a claim that every model has equivalent current-generation test coverage. The strongest directly comparable ANC figures available here come from TechRadar’s weighted test, accessed October 7, 2026. Its scenes include a hair dryer, microwave, traffic, and café noise, with traffic and café weighted twice. The scores reflect that guide’s method alone.

Which headphones suit which listener?
Sony WH-1000XM6: a feature-rich travel and work candidate
Sony identifies the WH-1000XM6 as its current noise-cancelling over-ear model. Its product information lists QN3 processing, 12 microphones, multipoint, and folding earcups. Sony says the QN3 processor optimizes the microphones in real time for call clarity. It also says the headphones support multipoint pairing with more than one device at a time, while warning that interoperability may vary. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent microphone or ANC test results.
TechRadar gave the XM6 a weighted ANC score of 28 in its listed scenes, below the 29.5 scores for both Bose generations in that guide. Sony’s own ANC comparisons are based on Sony Corporation research, so they should be understood as vendor claims rather than independent head-to-head results. The XM6’s folding earcups may help with packing, but confirm what accessories are included with the exact regional version.
Sony’s product FAQ listed an MSRP of $459.99 on July 23, 2026, and warns that promotions may no longer apply. That is a dated manufacturer price, not a live retailer quote. See Sony’s WH-1000XM6 product page.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): prioritize ANC, then audition the rest
TechRadar’s weighted ANC table gave the second-generation QuietComfort Ultra a score of 29.5, tied with the first-generation Ultra. That is the highest score among the models in the table relevant to this current shortlist, but it covers only the guide’s chosen noise scenes and weighting. Tom’s Guide also describes the second-generation model’s ANC as particularly effective, while criticizing its sound and build quality as less impressive than expected. Those are that publication’s judgments, not a guarantee of how every listener will rate them.
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
TechRadar reports 30 hours of battery life with ANC enabled for the second-generation Bose in its comparison. If fit or sound matters as much as isolation, try the headphones before committing where possible; comfort and sound preference vary by listener. Tom’s Guide and TechRadar provide broader coverage of the product in their respective guide and comparison.
Apple AirPods Max 2: consider the Apple ecosystem and weight
Tom’s Guide reports strong sound and improved ANC over the original AirPods Max, while noting the newer headphones’ weight and the value of their iOS integration. The review also describes ecosystem limitations for Android users. That makes platform fit part of the buying decision: ask whether Apple-device integration is useful enough to justify the tradeoffs for your everyday use.

TechRadar’s ANC table lists a score of 26 for AirPods Max, but that result is not identified as a score for AirPods Max 2, so it should not be transferred to the newer generation. The available guide does not provide a directly comparable current-generation score for Max 2. Read Tom’s Guide’s AirPods Max 2 review for its generation-specific assessment.
Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless: a candidate, not a fully ranked current-generation pick
Consumer Reports includes the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless as a noise-cancelling over-ear option in its 2026 Buying Guide and lists a guide price of $450. That is a guide-listed figure, not a verified live retailer price. The available current-generation review material does not establish enough comparable performance detail to place it confidently above the other choices here. Consider it if it is on your list, but compare a current review of the exact model and try its fit rather than relying on an unsupported ranking.

Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S3: a guide pick outside the comparable test table
Tom’s Guide calls the PX7 S3 its main pick in its October 2026 noise-cancelling headphone guide. That makes it relevant to a current shortlist, but the cited material does not provide a matching score from TechRadar’s weighted ANC table. Treat the editorial placement as Tom’s Guide’s recommendation, not as a direct score comparison with the Bose or Sony.

Match ANC to the sounds you need to reduce
Noise cancellation is not a single condition. Low-frequency aircraft or road rumble, steady café sound, conversation, and sudden higher-pitched noises can produce different results. TechRadar’s hair-dryer, microwave, traffic, and café scenes offer a useful example of a broader test than one overall impression, but the score still depends on that guide’s chosen sounds and weighting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- For flights and commuting: prioritize results for traffic or transport-like rumble, and consider whether the headphones stay comfortable through a long session.
- For an office or café: look for evidence about voices and busy-room noise rather than assuming a strong result against rumble means speech will disappear.
- For mixed environments: use a review that reports multiple scenes; do not treat a single ANC number as proof of performance against every sound.
Try the fit when possible. Headband pressure, earcup size, heat, glasses, and personal sensitivity can change long-session comfort; a brief review cannot establish a universal comfort winner.

Sound preference
ANC and sound quality are separate reasons to buy. A reviewer’s praise for noise reduction does not establish that the tuning will suit you. Use the sound descriptions in a generation-specific review, then decide whether its character matches your preference for a more neutral, bass-forward, energetic, or detailed presentation. The available Tom’s Guide comments on the second-generation Bose and AirPods Max 2 illustrate that sound judgments can differ even among highly regarded ANC products.
Battery claims
TechRadar reports 30 hours with ANC enabled for both the Sony XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), compared with 24 hours for the first-generation Bose Ultra in its comparison. These are figures reported in that guide, not a guarantee of runtime under every setting or use pattern. Keep the generation and ANC condition attached to the number when comparing.
Calls and switching devices
For work, check microphone performance and the ability to switch between a computer and phone. Sony says the XM6 supports multipoint and describes its 12-microphone call system as optimizing for clarity; those are Sony’s own specifications. Device compatibility can vary, so confirm the exact phone, computer, and operating-system combination you plan to use.

A quick decision checklist
- Choose the noise type that matters most—transport rumble, voices, or mixed everyday noise—and look for tests that include it.
- Decide whether ANC, sound preference, work calls, or platform-specific features matter most; these priorities can point to different models.
- Check long-session fit, especially if you wear glasses or are sensitive to pressure or heat.
- Compare battery numbers only when the model generation and ANC condition match.
- Confirm regional availability, current price, multipoint or wired-use requirements, and the accessories included with the exact SKU.
