The five headline picks for the weekend of October 9–11, 2026 are Carrie on Prime Video, Disclosure Day on Peacock, Small Prophets on Apple TV, Animals on Netflix, and Season 6 of Abbott Elementary on Hulu. Two of the five are films and one is a returning season, so “five new shows” overstates the list. “Five new streaming picks” is the more accurate description.
The five picks at a glance
| Title | Type | Service | Timing (US listings) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrie | Limited series | Prime Video | Available when the October 8 roundup ran |
| Disclosure Day | Film | Peacock | Listed to start Friday, October 9 |
| Small Prophets | Comedy series (British) | Apple TV | Available when the October 8 roundup ran |
| Animals | Film (thriller) | Netflix | Listed for Friday, October 9 |
| Abbott Elementary, Season 6 | Returning sitcom season | Hulu | Premiered Thursday, October 8 |
The timing column reflects Axios’s October 8, 2026 weekend roundup, which the Disney+ and Hulu schedules also match for Abbott Elementary. Catalogs differ by country and change without notice, so confirm each title in its app before you plan a viewing night around it.

The picks, one by one
Carrie (Prime Video)
This is a limited-series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, developed by Mike Flanagan. Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, a sheltered teenager who faces a viral bullying scandal at a new school and discovers she has telekinetic powers. If you want the source material, the original Stephen King novel is the natural companion read. The series is the pick for viewers who want horror built on a slow, character-driven escalation rather than a quick scare.

Disclosure Day (Peacock)
This Steven Spielberg film is listed to start streaming on Peacock on Friday, October 9. It follows a Kansas City meteorologist, played by Emily Blunt, and a cybersecurity whistleblower, played by Josh O’Connor, as they try to expose evidence of extraterrestrial life and a long-running cover-up. It fits viewers who want a science-fiction thriller with a conspiracy hook and a two-person investigation at its center.

- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Small Prophets (Apple TV)
A British comedy series that was available on Apple TV when the roundup ran. Pearce Quigley plays Michael Sleep, who, seven years after his partner Clea disappears, follows an alchemy recipe left by his father to make small magical spirits that can predict the future. The show is the oddball option on the list, best suited to viewers who enjoy absurd premises played straight.
Animals (Netflix)
This thriller is listed for Netflix on Friday, October 9. When a couple’s son is kidnapped, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife scramble to raise a ransom, and the fallout reaches both their family and his political future. Ben Affleck directs, co-wrote the film, and stars alongside Kerry Washington. The cast also includes Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun. It is the most straightforward pick for a tense, plot-driven film night.
Rank #2

- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Abbott Elementary, Season 6 (Hulu)
The season premiere was scheduled for Thursday, October 8, according to both Axios and the official Disney+ and Hulu schedules. That makes it a returning-season comedy you can start or catch up on over the weekend, not a title that debuts during October 9–11. Choose it if you want a lighter workplace sitcom between heavier picks.
How to choose for the weekend

- For a series you can binge: Carrie on Prime Video, or Small Prophets on Apple TV.
