5 Major Tech Brands With Japanese Roots—and One Ownership Caveat

Sony, Panasonic, Epson, and Canon are Japanese companies; JVC is the more complicated case. It was founded in Japan and later acquired by Matsushita, now Panasonic, but Panasonic is no longer involved with JVC today. So the five names often grouped together in this story do not all share the same current ownership status.

“Japanese-owned” can refer to a company’s origin, its present corporate parent, or a past acquisition. Those are different things. The histories below explain why these five familiar tech brands are associated with Japan—and where that association does not mean current Japanese ownership.

Which tech brands are associated with Japanese companies?

Brand Japanese connection Key date in its history What the connection means
Sony Japanese company, originally Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation 1957: began exporting transistor radios to the U.S. and Europe Japanese corporate history; the account does not describe Sony as a subsidiary of another Japanese company.
Panasonic Japanese company founded as a business associated with Konosuke Matsushita 1955: began exporting speakers under the Panasonic name Japanese corporate history, with earlier Matsushita and National naming.
Epson Developed from Seiko’s timing-printer work 1975: established Epson as a brand A Japanese company history rooted in Seiko-related printer development.
Canon Japanese company preceded by Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory 1933: predecessor founded in Tokyo Japanese corporate history, not a Japanese acquisition of a foreign brand.
JVC Founded in Japan as an offshoot of the American Victor Talking Machine Company; later acquired by Matsushita 1954: Matsushita acquired JVC Historical Japanese-parent connection; Panasonic is no longer involved with JVC today, according to the account.

Sony: from Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering to global electronics

Sony began under the name Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation. The company started exporting transistor radios to the United States and Europe in 1957, then expanded into audio equipment, televisions, and cameras. In 1968 it entered the American record industry through a joint venture with CBS; two years later, it became the first Japanese firm listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

These milestones describe Sony’s expansion and international presence, not ownership by another Japanese company. Its corporate history is Japanese, but that is distinct from being a subsidiary of a domestic parent.

Panasonic: Matsushita, National, and the Panasonic name

Konosuke Matsushita began making two-way electrical sockets with his siblings in Osaka in 1918. The business became known under the National name, and it began exporting speakers as Panasonic in 1955. Today, Lumix is among Panasonic’s camera lines.

A reported April 2026 arrangement had Panasonic contract production of TV and home-entertainment products to Chinese producer Skyworth. That is a manufacturing arrangement; it does not, by itself, change Panasonic’s corporate nationality or establish a change in ownership.

Epson: a printer heritage linked to Seiko

Epson’s history grew out of Seiko’s quartz timepiece business. The company developed a timing printer in 1963, followed by the compact EP-101 digital printer in 1968. After a second generation of printers, it established Epson as its own brand in 1975. Printers and digital projectors remain familiar Epson product categories.

The account reports that the name Epson expands to “son of Electric Printer,” but that explanation is not independently established here as official corporate etymology. The dates and products show the brand’s printer roots without requiring that name explanation to be treated as definitive.

Canon: from an optical laboratory to cameras

Canon’s predecessor, Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, was founded in Tokyo in 1933. Its first production camera, the Hansa Canon, appeared in 1935 and used Nikon lenses. Canon opened a Fifth Avenue office in the United States in 1955. Its later camera families include the EOS R mirrorless line.

This history establishes Canon’s Japanese origin; it does not establish comparative performance among camera models. No product testing or model recommendation is part of these corporate-history facts.

JVC: Japanese-founded, acquired by Matsushita, and no longer tied to Panasonic

JVC—Victor Corporation of Japan—began in 1927 as an offshoot of the American Victor Talking Machine Company. RCA sold its JVC shares in 1937, and Matsushita acquired the company in 1954. Matsushita later became known as Panasonic, but the account says Panasonic is no longer involved with JVC today. JVC is therefore the key exception to any claim that all five brands are currently owned by Japanese companies.

JVC is also associated with recorded-video formats and the invention of VHS in 1976. Its current U.S. offerings are described as including earphones, cables, and vehicle infotainment head units; those product categories do not imply a current Panasonic ownership relationship.

Origin, parent company, and brand history are not interchangeable

A company can be founded in Japan, use a Japanese brand name, or have been owned by a Japanese parent in the past without all those facts amounting to the same thing. In this group, Sony, Panasonic, Epson, and Canon are presented through Japanese corporate histories. JVC’s Matsushita connection is historical, not a basis for calling it a Panasonic subsidiary today.

That distinction matters beyond these five names: a brand’s place of origin does not necessarily reveal its present parent company, and a past acquisition does not prove current control. For this list, the clearest summary is four Japanese corporate histories alongside one Japanese-founded brand with a past Japanese parent.
