This guide compares five useful laptop choices and explains how to match their configurations to your workflow. It is a shortlist, not a single lab-tested ranking; confirm the exact model, screen, memory, storage, regional availability, and price before buying.
How to choose a laptop for photo and video editing
Start with the work you actually do. Photo editing and light 1080p or 4K cutting can suit a different configuration from multicamera timelines, complex effects, high-resolution footage, or color grading. Demanding sessions also make cooling and sustained performance important, not just a processor’s headline specifications.

- For photography: prioritize a color-capable display, sufficient memory for layered files, and an SSD with room for active projects.
- For occasional or light video work: balance a capable CPU and GPU with portability and battery life; avoid paying for a high-end graphics configuration you will not use.
- For intensive video and grading: look for stronger graphics, more memory, effective cooling, and storage sized for large media files. ASUS’s 2025 creator guide recommends a GeForce RTX 5070 or 5090, 32–64 GB RAM, a bright 4K OLED display, and excellent cooling for its studio video-editor/color-grader category. That is ASUS’s category recommendation, not a universal minimum.
Software compatibility matters too. Check that the editing applications and plug-ins you rely on support the laptop’s operating system and processor architecture before choosing between macOS and Windows.
Five laptops worth considering
These options reflect current editorial shortlists and manufacturer positioning, not a common five-model benchmark or an independently established ranking. Prices and availability were not verified for a specific region, and configurations can change.

| Laptop | Why it is on the shortlist | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Apple MacBook Pro 14 (M5 Max) | Digital Camera World’s 2026 video-editing guide lists an 18-core CPU, 32- or 40-core graphics, 36–128 GB RAM, a 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, and 2–8 TB SSD configurations. The guide reports up to 17 hours of battery life and P3 wide-gamut display support; these are publisher-reported details, not a guarantee for every configuration. | Confirm the current regional SKU and its memory and storage options with Apple. Check whether your software and peripherals suit macOS. |
| ASUS ProArt P16 (H7606 family) | ASUS positions the P16 for photo and video editing. Its current product page describes RTX 50-series graphics, up to 64 GB RAM, and a Lumina Pro OLED display. | Check the exact GPU, panel, memory, and storage in the listing. Digital Camera World measured 99% P3, 95% Adobe RGB, and 100% sRGB coverage on its review sample only; that result should not be assumed for every panel option. |
| Other Apple MacBook Pro configurations | A MacBook Pro configuration below the M5 Max may better fit a photographer or editor whose workload does not need the highest graphics configuration. The 2026 guide’s listed M5 Max configurations illustrate the range available in that guide, not a requirement for all editing work. | Compare the precise chip, unified memory, storage, display, and price in your region. Do not assume specifications listed for one generation or configuration carry over to another. |
| Other ASUS ProArt configurations | The ProArt line is a Windows alternative for creators who want to compare display-focused designs and discrete-GPU configurations. ASUS’s product material presents the P16 as one such option. | Compare individual models rather than treating the family as one specification. Check GPU, cooling, screen coverage, memory limits, ports, and software compatibility. |
| Windows alternatives in editorial shortlists | RTINGS’ photo- and video-editing recommendation pages identify other Windows choices and trade-offs. Their lists are useful starting points, but they are not a single, directly comparable five-laptop test. | Read the linked individual reviews for test methods and measurements, and check update history because model recommendations can change. |
The last three entries are comparison paths rather than a claim that a particular unverified configuration is a top-five winner. The cited editorial pages do not establish one consistent five-product ranking across budget tiers. Choose a specific model only after checking its current configuration and independent review evidence.
How much RAM do you need for photo editing?
Lenovo’s 2025 guidance recommends at least 16 GB for photo editing and describes 32 GB or more as suitable for professionals handling complex projects. It categorizes 32–64 GB as an advanced range. Treat these as Lenovo’s recommendations, not hard requirements for every application or image library.

- 16 GB: a reasonable starting point under Lenovo’s guidance for photo editing, particularly when projects and multitasking are moderate.
- 32 GB or more: consider this for complex professional projects, heavier multitasking, or editing alongside other demanding applications.
- 32–64 GB: Lenovo places this in its advanced range; the benefit depends on the actual workload and software.
For video work, project resolution, codecs, effects, and the number of simultaneous applications affect memory needs. Check the software maker’s requirements as well as the laptop’s limits. Some laptops do not allow memory upgrades after purchase, so confirm the configuration before ordering.
What display should you look for?
For color-sensitive photo work, Lenovo’s 2025 guidance says a display with 100% sRGB or Adobe RGB coverage is a good choice for professionals. It also recommends at least 400 nits for comfortable work in varied lighting. These are Lenovo’s recommendations; gamut coverage and brightness do not, by themselves, establish color accuracy.

Check the panel on the exact configuration, not merely the laptop family name. A model may be sold with different screens, and measurements from one review sample cannot be generalized to every version. For color-critical work, consider how you will calibrate the display and whether the screen suits the color space you deliver in.
Balance graphics, storage, cooling, and portability
Graphics and sustained performance
A dedicated GPU can accelerate some photo tasks, while video effects, high-resolution footage, and grading may benefit from stronger graphics. ASUS’s guidance for its intensive studio category calls for a strong discrete GPU, but not every photographer or casual editor needs one. Compare independent reviews of the exact configuration, especially if long export or render sessions are part of your routine.
Rank #4
- 【Ryzen 5 6600H for Demanding Daily Performance】AMD Ryzen 5 6600H processor features 6 cores, 12 threads, and boost speeds up to 4.5GHz, delivering stronger performance for office multitasking, coding, content handling, and sustained daily workloads. Compared with many common thin-and-light Intel Ryzen 5 7430U, Core i3-1315U, Core i5-1334U, AMD Ryzen 5 7520U, and Ryzen 7 5825U configurations, it is a better fit for users who need more performance headroom.
- 【Radeon 660M Graphics】AMD Radeon 660M integrated graphics with RDNA 2 architecture supports everyday visual work, smooth media playback, light photo editing, and casual gaming needs like LoL or CS2 at 1080p settings. It is a balanced fit for students, remote workers, and entry-level creators who want capable graphics without the extra heat and power draw of a dedicated GPU.
- 【16GB RAM & 512GB SSD with Upgrade Room】16GB DDR5 memory and a 512GB PCIe SSD deliver smooth out-of-the-box performance for multitasking, large file handling, and daily storage needs. With dual SO-DIMM slots and an M.2 2280 design, the system still leaves room to upgrade up to 64GB RAM and up to 4TB SSD as your needs continue to grow.
- 【2 Year Warranty Support】Includes a 2-year manufacturer warranty and a 90-day hassle-free return window, with final assembly in the United States and after-sales replacement handled in the United States under this listing workflow. That added service clarity gives students, professionals, and home users more confidence when choosing a laptop for long-term daily use.
- 【53.58Wh Battery and 100W PD】A 53.58Wh smart battery paired with a separate 100W PD charger gives this laptop more flexibility for campus study, coffee shop work, and moving between rooms at home. The USB-C setup also supports convenient power and display connectivity, helping reduce the hassle of slow charging and frequent outlet hunting during a busy day.
SSD capacity and project storage
Lenovo recommends an SSD for editing. Internal capacity affects how much active footage, image material, cache, and software you can keep available; large video projects can quickly make storage a practical constraint. Check the laptop’s built-in capacity, available ports, and whether storage can be expanded. A portable SSD can supplement project storage, but it does not replace checking the laptop’s own capacity and connectivity.

Cooling, battery, and weight
Thin, light designs are convenient for travel, while sustained editing can put greater demands on cooling and power. Compare tested performance under extended workloads rather than assuming a brief benchmark predicts long exports. Consider battery life and weight alongside the work you expect to do away from a desk; reported battery figures vary with configuration and use.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Define your workload: list your editing applications, typical photo or video formats, project complexity, and whether you edit on the road.
- Set minimums for your projects: use the application maker’s requirements, then choose memory, graphics, and storage with room for your actual files and multitasking.
- Inspect the exact display option: verify resolution, gamut, brightness, and independent measurements for that panel configuration.
- Check upgrade and connection options: confirm whether memory is configurable, whether storage can be expanded, and that the ports support your drives, displays, and card readers.
- Compare independent tests: look for sustained CPU/GPU performance, screen measurements, battery results, and any reported flicker concerns for the exact model.
- Confirm local details: verify the current generation, SKU, warranty, price, and availability in your region before purchase.
