You can improve coverage in a dead zone without buying a new mesh kit. An old router connected by Ethernet is usually the most reliable upgrade; a compatible router can also work as a wireless repeater or 802.11s mesh node. A Raspberry Pi or spare Linux PC can provide a configurable hotspot when its wireless hardware supports access-point mode. None guarantees a higher internet speed: walls, interference, channel congestion, client radios and the backhaul determine the result.

Choose the upgrade that fits your wiring and hardware

Upgrade Backhaul Best use Main check
Old router in access-point mode Ethernet Most dependable coverage extension AP/bridge mode or configurable LAN and DHCP settings
Old router as a repeater Wireless Rooms where Ethernet is impractical Firmware and radio compatibility
802.11s mesh node Wireless mesh link Routers that explicitly support mesh Support on both routers
Raspberry Pi hotspot Ethernet or Wi‑Fi uplink Configurable, low-cost experiment Board and adapter support for the required band
Spare Linux PC access point Ethernet or Wi‑Fi uplink Temporary or flexible secondary node Wi‑Fi driver and AP-mode support

Before changing anything, identify the exact router hardware revision, available firmware features, radio bands and security-update status. Keep a recovery path: save the current configuration, note the original management address and have a cable available for a wired reset or reconfiguration.

1. Turn an old router into a wired access point

If you can run Ethernet to the weak-coverage room, this is the preferred method. The cable supplies a dedicated, predictable backhaul, so the second router does not have to spend wireless airtime receiving and retransmitting traffic.

With a built-in AP or bridge mode

  1. Open the spare router’s administration page and select its access-point (AP) or bridge mode.
  2. Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the main router to the port specified by the spare router’s AP instructions. Many devices use a LAN port in AP mode.
  3. Set the Wi‑Fi name and encryption. Matching the main router’s SSID, security type and password can let clients roam, although roaming decisions remain client- and implementation-dependent.
  4. Apply the configuration, then test both wired and wireless clients in the target room.

Fallback when no AP mode exists

Connect LAN-to-LAN, assign the spare router a LAN address inside the main router’s subnet, and disable the spare router’s DHCP server. Leave its WAN port unused. Choose an address that will not conflict with the main router or another device, and use that address for future administration.

  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

2. Reuse the router as a wireless repeater

A repeater uses a wireless client link to the main router and then provides local Wi‑Fi. Open-source router firmware documents a relayd arrangement in which one radio or interface acts as the uplink and another radio or interface serves local clients. It is a fallback when better-integrated WDS or 802.11s support is unavailable, and compatibility varies by device and network.

Configuration choices

  • Same network: Use the main router’s SSID, encryption and password for a more seamless experience. Client roaming is not guaranteed.
  • Separate network: Give the repeater a different SSID while testing. This makes it obvious which access point a device is using and simplifies troubleshooting.

Expect wireless backhaul to share radio capacity with client traffic. Place the repeater where it still receives a strong signal from the main router, not inside the dead zone itself. If the firmware cannot join the main network as a client, do not assume a repeater mode can be added safely; verify support for the exact model and hardware revision first.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

3. Build an 802.11s mesh node

802.11s is a mesh architecture, not merely a repeater setting. Use it only when both the main router and the spare router explicitly support 802.11s. Follow the firmware’s mesh setup for the exact hardware, and confirm how the system handles addresses, encryption and client access before replacing a working configuration.

When mesh makes sense

  • Both devices list 802.11s support in their firmware documentation.
  • You want a coordinated wireless topology rather than a basic client-and-rebroadcast link.
  • You can recover either router over Ethernet if the mesh configuration fails.

Mesh still depends on radio conditions and available capacity. It improves reach to a target area; it does not create a guaranteed internet-speed increase.

Check band support first

Some Raspberry Pi boards and wireless adapters do not support 5 GHz. Verify the exact board and adapter before planning a dual-band hotspot. If the built-in radio lacks the required band or behaves unreliably, a compatible USB Wi‑Fi adapter may provide the needed capability.

5. Make a spare Linux PC a secondary access point

An old Linux laptop, mini-PC or desktop can perform the same hotspot role when its Wi‑Fi adapter and driver support AP mode. A USB adapter can solve hardware or driver limitations, but check Linux support for that specific adapter before buying or repurposing it.

Best uses and trade-offs

  • Use a laptop or mini-PC as a temporary node while renovating, testing coverage or serving a hard-to-wire room.
  • Keep the machine near Ethernet when possible so the wireless radio is not also responsible for the uplink.
  • Consider power consumption before leaving an older desktop running continuously.
  • Separate the hotspot from critical gateway duties unless the operating system and security maintenance are dependable.

Security, roaming and maintenance checks

Do not make obsolete firmware your internet gateway

An old router can be useful as a secondary access point, but do not expose it as the primary internet gateway if it no longer receives security updates. Check the manufacturer’s support status and install the newest firmware available for the exact model before deployment.

Roaming is helpful but not guaranteed

Matching SSIDs and security settings can allow clients to move between access points, yet the client device and access-point implementation decide when that happens. A separate SSID is often better during setup because it reveals which node a device is using.

Test the actual room

Walk through the target area with the devices you care about. Check connection stability, latency and the ability to reach local services, not just whether an SSID appears. Results vary with walls, interference, channel congestion, client radios and backhaul; authoritative sources publish no universal speed or range figure for these conversions.

A practical decision rule

  1. Choose a wired access point whenever Ethernet can reach the weak room.
  2. Choose a wireless repeater only when the spare router’s firmware and radios support it.
  3. Choose 802.11s mesh only when both routers explicitly support mesh.
  4. Choose a Raspberry Pi or spare PC when you want a configurable hotspot and have compatible Wi‑Fi hardware.

The realistic promise is better coverage in a specific area using equipment you already own. A guaranteed Mbps increase, universal roaming and plug-and-play compatibility are not supported by the available evidence.
