For an old laptop used mainly for web apps, consider ChromeOS Flex if the exact model is certified or you accept the compatibility risk. For a conventional desktop, investigate Lubuntu and check current release guidance for your hardware. For focused needs, Firefox can handle browsing and LibreOffice can cover documents if your system meets their published requirements. None of these guarantees that demanding sites or large files will run smoothly.
Choose based on what you need the laptop to do
- Mostly web apps: Consider ChromeOS Flex, but check your laptop model and the apps you rely on before replacing its operating system.
- A conventional desktop: Investigate Lubuntu if you are comfortable with Linux and willing to verify compatibility for the current release.
- Browsing or documents on the system you already have: Check Firefox and LibreOffice requirements before installing either. They do not require changing your operating system.
1. ChromeOS Flex for a web-focused laptop
ChromeOS Flex is a free operating system for compatible PCs and Macs. Google publishes minimum installation requirements: an Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible device, 4 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, and the ability to boot from USB. Google does not recommend or support Intel or AMD components from 2012 or earlier, or Nvidia components from 2014 or earlier. These minimums do not guarantee that every laptop will work well.

Google says, “Google only guarantees ChromeOS Flex functionality on certified models.” Check the certified-device list for your exact model. On uncertified devices, Google does not guarantee performance, functionality, or stability. Know the trade-offs before installing
Installing ChromeOS Flex erases the laptop’s existing files, settings, programs, and data. Back up anything you need before proceeding. Google’s FAQ also states that ChromeOS Flex does not support Android apps or dual boot. If you depend on either Android apps or keeping your current operating system alongside the new one, this is not a suitable replacement.

To create installation media, you need an 8 GB-or-larger USB flash drive. Creating the installer erases the drive’s contents, so copy off anything stored on it first. You do not need to buy a USB drive for the other recommendations in this article.
2. Lubuntu for a conventional Linux desktop
Lubuntu is a lightweight Linux distribution that may suit someone seeking a conventional desktop environment. Its project says it aims to keep a light default experience, but its available official statement on hardware direction dates to 2018. That statement says Lubuntu would stop publishing minimum system requirements and would no longer primarily focus on older hardware.

As a result, old minimum requirements quoted for earlier releases are not reliable guidance for a current installation. Check the current release’s official requirements and compatibility information for your laptop before installing, and make sure the desktop and applications you need are available. The cited project statement does not establish which current laptop models or hardware tiers are supported.
3. Firefox for browsing
Firefox may be an option if your laptop still runs a supported operating system and meets the relevant hardware requirements. Mozilla’s Firefox 155.0 requirements list Windows 10 or later, a 1 GHz or faster processor, 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit Windows or 2 GB for 64-bit Windows, and 500 MB of disk space as recommended Windows hardware. For macOS, that page lists version 10.15 or later; GNU/Linux has its own library requirements.

Those figures are specific to Firefox 155.0 and describe requirements, not a promise of smooth browsing. Many open tabs and demanding websites can still strain an older machine. Check Mozilla’s Firefox 155.0 system requirements for your operating system before installing.
4. LibreOffice for documents and spreadsheets
LibreOffice is a free desktop office suite for supported Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux systems. The Document Foundation’s published requirements list Windows 10 or 11, a Pentium-compatible PC, 256 MB of RAM (512 MB recommended), and up to 1.5 GB of disk space. These are installation requirements, not a performance guarantee for large documents, spreadsheets, or several applications running at once.

Before you change the laptop
- Identify the main job. Decide whether the laptop is primarily for web apps, a general desktop, or documents.
- Check requirements for the exact software version and operating system. A published minimum is an eligibility threshold, not a speed guarantee.
- Back up files before installing or removing software. This is essential before installing ChromeOS Flex because installation erases existing data.
- Test reversibility and compatibility. If considering ChromeOS Flex, try it temporarily from USB and check whether your model is certified. For Lubuntu, use current release guidance rather than requirements from old release posts.
What these tools can—and cannot—do
Free software can give an older laptop a useful role if its hardware and operating system remain compatible. It cannot ensure that a web-heavy workload, large documents, or multiple simultaneous apps will feel fast. Match the tool to the laptop’s intended job, verify the relevant requirements, and avoid replacing an existing system until you have protected your data and confirmed the trade-offs.
