5 fast steps to take immediately after a company leaks your personal data

Act in this order: confirm what information was exposed, secure affected accounts, protect your credit if identity data was included, contact banks or card issuers, then report misuse and keep monitoring. The right response depends on whether the leak involved a password, payment card, Social Security number, phone account, medical records or tax information.

1. Verify the breach and identify exactly what was exposed

Read the company’s breach notice carefully, but verify it independently before taking action. Open the company’s official website or app yourself, or call a number from a statement or account you already trust. Do not click links or call numbers in an unexpected email or text; breach publicity often triggers convincing phishing campaigns.

Record the affected data category: email address, password, phone number, payment-card details, Social Security number, identity document, medical information or tax information. The category determines the next remedy. The Federal Trade Commission directs consumers to IdentityTheft.gov/databreach for a tailored checklist.

2. Change passwords and turn on multifactor authentication

Change the password for the affected account first. Then change every account that used the same password or a similar variation. Attackers routinely try leaked credentials on email, shopping, banking and social accounts, so changing only the breached site’s password leaves reused logins exposed.

  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
  1. Sign in through the company’s official app or a manually entered web address.
  2. Set a new, unique password and change any related PIN.
  3. Review account-recovery email addresses, phone numbers and active sessions; remove anything you do not recognize.
  4. Enable multifactor authentication (MFA). The FTC says MFA makes it harder for scammers to log in even when they have a username and password.

A password manager can generate and store unique credentials. For accounts that support it, a USB hardware security key is an optional MFA method; check compatibility before buying one. MFA does not replace password changes, credit controls or reporting.

3. Protect your credit if identity data was exposed

If the notice includes your Social Security number or identity documents, treat the risk as potential new-account fraud. Obtain your credit reports, place a free one-year fraud alert, and consider a credit freeze. A fraud alert asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit; a freeze blocks prospective creditors from accessing your file until you lift it. The FTC explains that “a credit freeze makes it harder for someone to open a new account in your name.”

4. Contact banks and card issuers about payment information

For exposed debit-card, credit-card or bank-account data, call the institution’s fraud department using the number on the back of your card, a statement or its official website. Ask whether it should freeze or close the affected account, issue replacement cards or add other controls.

  • Do not rely on a replacement card alone if an account number or online-banking login was also exposed.

5. Report identity theft and continue monitoring

If you discover an unauthorized account, purchase or other misuse, report it at IdentityTheft.gov. The service can create an FTC Identity Theft Report and a recovery plan. Keep copies of the breach notice, messages, account records and correspondence.

Continue checking credit reports, bank statements, card activity and account-login alerts. Watch for follow-up calls, texts and emails that claim to offer refunds, security checks or credit monitoring. Verify every request through an independently found official channel; never provide a one-time code, password or payment to an unsolicited caller.

Payment-card data Call the issuer’s fraud department Freeze or replace the card and monitor transactions
Social Security number or identity documents Pull credit reports Place a one-year fraud alert and consider a credit freeze

Medical or tax information Start the IdentityTheft.gov recovery flow Follow the specialized instructions it generates and watch for related fraud

How to tell a breach notification is genuine

  • Find the company’s website or app by typing the address yourself, not by using the message’s link.
  • Compare the notice with an announcement in your existing account or a statement you already receive.
  • Call a known number and ask whether the incident and recommended steps are real.
  • Be suspicious of urgency, requests for passwords or MFA codes, demands for payment, and unfamiliar download links.
