A useful shortlist matches headphones to the way you will use them: Meze Audio 99 Classics V2 for wired listening, Sony WH-1000XM6 for office use, Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for travel, Sennheiser HD 660S2 for quiet-room wired listening, and Focal Bathys MG for premium wireless audiophile listening.
How to choose comfortable headphones
Comfort is a fit question, not a spec you can settle by comparing weight alone. Crutchfield’s comfort framework considers perceived weight, ear-pad softness, headband softness, clamping force, and security or stability. In practice, also check whether your ears fit inside the cups, how much pressure the headband puts on your crown, and whether the pads become warm during a long session.

Crutchfield says its comfort study began with 20 employees trying more than 50 over-ear headphones across several sessions in 2019. That is useful context for its fit criteria, but it is not a new controlled test of every model in its 2026 guide. No directly comparable independent comfort score across the five picks establishes which one will suit every head shape.
- Ear-cup clearance: Check that your ears do not press against the pads or inner cup, particularly if you have larger ears.
- Pressure and stability: A secure fit can help when moving, but strong clamping or concentrated headband pressure may become tiring.
- Heat and pad feel: Soft padding can feel pleasant at first yet become warm over time. Glasses can also change how pads sit and seal.
- Use environment: Choose closed-back isolation and wireless features for noisy places; open-back headphones are better suited to quiet rooms.

Meze Audio 99 Classics V2: relaxed wired listening
Crutchfield describes the 99 Classics V2 as having a relaxed fit, soft ear pads, and a spring-suspension headband designed to distribute pressure. Its listed weight is 9.3 oz in the 2026 guide. It is the straightforward pick if you want a wired, closed-back headphone and do not need the convenience of a wireless connection.
#1 Best Overall
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Sony WH-1000XM6: office features, but check cup depth
Crutchfield describes padded, roomy earcups and a wider folding headband intended to spread weight. The guide lists a weight of 8.96 oz, Bluetooth multipoint, and up to 30 hours of battery life with noise cancellation. RTINGS, however, calls out the earpads’ shallow depth. If your ears are tall or protrude, try the fit before committing rather than assuming the roomy cup description guarantees clearance.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): travel padding
Crutchfield’s travel pick is described as lightweight and relaxed, with soft padding and replaceable ear pads. Its guide lists 9.28 oz and up to 30 hours of wireless use. RTINGS finds the Bose padding more generous than the Sony’s, but also notes that this model cannot be used passively and has a weaker microphone system. That distinction matters if you need a wired fallback or prioritize call quality.
Rank #2

- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
Sennheiser HD 660S2: open-back comfort for a quiet room
Crutchfield describes roomy cups, velour pads, and weight distribution that makes the HD 660S2 feel lighter than some other large audiophile headphones; it lists 9.2 oz without the cable. Its open-back design is the key limitation: sound can escape and surrounding noise can reach you, so it is a poor match for a plane, shared office, or room where others need quiet.
Focal Bathys MG: premium wireless listening
Crutchfield’s wireless audiophile comfort choice is the Bathys MG, a large-driver design for listeners who value wireless audiophile sound enough to accept a premium price. The guide listed it at $1,049 when the page was captured; treat that as a dated listing, not a guaranteed current price. It is not the default value choice.

Sony or Bose: which fit is more promising?
The sources do not produce a universal winner. Crutchfield treats the models as close in comfort and gives them different use cases; RTINGS prefers Bose’s more generous headband and earpad padding while noting the Sony’s shallow pads. Sony’s office-oriented features and Bose’s padding may point different listeners in different directions. If cup depth is a concern, or you need passive wired listening or a stronger microphone, weigh those factors alongside padding rather than deciding by brand or weight alone.
Alternatives and fit caveats
Apple AirPods Max 2
Reviewer impressions vary. What Hi-Fi? reported that the metal earcups could press on the ears over time and that some smaller-headed reviewers needed to reposition them. Tom’s Guide highlighted the mesh canopy’s pressure distribution, while recommending Bose for long flights when lightness and noise cancellation matter. These are reviewer assessments, not a prediction for every wearer.

Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless
An Android Central reviewer found the fit comfortable for long stretches but noticed ear warmth after about 45 minutes in that reviewer’s session. This is one person’s report, not a population-level result or a reason by itself to displace the five use-case picks above.

How to make the right choice before buying
- Match the design to the room. Choose closed-back headphones for travel or shared spaces; reserve the open-back HD 660S2 for quieter listening.
- Check your fit risks. If you wear glasses, have larger ears, or are sensitive to pressure or warmth, prioritize a trial or a return policy that gives you time to test a long session.
- Decide whether wireless features are essential. Multipoint, noise cancellation, portability, and battery life matter for work and travel; a wired model avoids depending on wireless convenience.
- Try a realistic listening session. Notice pressure at the crown and around the ears, cup contact, warmth, and whether the headphones stay stable when you move.
