No VPN can guarantee that every YouTube video will load. A VPN changes the network location your traffic appears to come from, which helps when a block is tied to location, and does nothing for restrictions set by the video’s uploader. The four providers that recur most often in 2026 YouTube-focused comparisons are NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and Proton VPN. The fifth slot is PureVPN, but only for a narrower case, livestreams, and only on the strength of one reviewer’s claim. Treat this list as a set of options to test, not a fixed ranking.
What a VPN can and cannot fix
YouTube restrictions come in two different forms, and a VPN addresses only one of them reliably. VPNAlert’s YouTube guide separates country-level YouTube blocks from video restrictions set by creators. A server in another country can help with the first. The second depends on where the rights holder has allowed the video to play, so switching location may not change the result.

Speed figures published by reviewers come from test lines and specific servers. They show what a setup achieved under the reviewer’s conditions. They are not a speed you should expect on your own connection, and they will shift with the server you pick, the time of day and your provider’s network load.

1. NordVPN
Tom’s Guide calls NordVPN its leading option for YouTube in its 2026 guide. VPNAlert describes it as a lag-free choice with a large server network and its NordLynx protocol. It suits readers who put playback smoothness and the choice of server location first. Neither source establishes that it unblocks YouTube everywhere, so check a specific country and video before relying on it.

2. Surfshark
TechRadar’s 2026 YouTube comparison reports access across several regions and unlimited simultaneous connections. In its WireGuard test, Surfshark passed 950 Mbps. That is a result on TechRadar’s test setup, not a speed guarantee. VPNAlert names Surfshark its top overall and YouTube choice elsewhere on its page. It is a strong fit for households with many devices that all need to stream.
3. ExpressVPN
TechRadar highlights ExpressVPN’s beginner-friendly apps and reports 898 Mbps on a 1 Gbps test line in 2026. Tom’s Guide includes it among its top three for YouTube, and Top10VPN’s broader streaming guide ranks it first. That broader guide covers streaming in general rather than YouTube alone, so read its ranking as a general streaming signal. ExpressVPN is the usual starting point for readers who want the simplest setup.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.

- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
4. Proton VPN
Tom’s Guide reports that Proton VPN gave YouTube and other streaming access in its tests on paid plans. TechRadar’s broader review says it had some success reaching US YouTube from abroad. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 guide describes a network of more than 6,000 servers in 119 locations across 91 countries. Network counts change, so check the provider’s current figures. Proton VPN suits readers who value privacy features and are willing to pay. Its free plan includes unlimited bandwidth, but according to Tom’s Guide it does not include streaming unblocking.
5. PureVPN
VPNAlert includes PureVPN in its five-provider list and describes it as the strongest option for YouTube-hosted livestreams. No other source in this set makes that claim, and it does not establish that PureVPN should outrank the other four for ordinary on-demand video. Consider it if livestreams are your main use, and test it against the others before committing.

Why published rankings disagree
The rankings differ because the tests differ. VPNAlert’s opening summary puts NordVPN first, but further down the page it labels Surfshark its top overall and YouTube choice. Tom’s Guide names NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Surfshark as its top three. Top10VPN’s streaming guide puts ExpressVPN first. Each uses its own test locations, dates, methods and criteria.
Comparitech’s streaming tracker tests continuously over a rolling 28-day window, covering 10 VPNs, 15 services and 9 regions. Its page, updated 5 October 2026, shows 7.0K stream tests. Its composite streaming score is built from Netflix and BBC iPlayer results, not YouTube, so it should not be read as a YouTube ranking.

When YouTube still will not load
These are general troubleshooting steps, not provider-specific fixes.
- Try a different video. If only one video fails, the restriction may be set by the creator or the rights holder, and a location change is unlikely to help.
- Connect to another server in the country you are targeting. Country-level blocks are the kind a different server location can fix.
- If the app offers a protocol setting, try another one. Some providers, such as NordVPN with NordLynx, use a WireGuard-based option that many users find faster.
- Disconnect, close the app fully, reconnect and reload YouTube.
- Clear the cache and cookies for the YouTube app or browser, then sign in again.
- If the video still fails on several servers, the provider’s addresses may be recognised by YouTube. Try a different provider, or contact the provider’s support team with the country, video and time you tested.
Legal and terms considerations
Using a VPN to get around a block may be illegal in some countries, and it may breach a platform’s terms of service. Check the rules where you live and where you are travelling. A VPN is most clearly useful for protecting your traffic on public networks and for legitimate privacy needs.
The providers above are chosen for their reported YouTube performance and features. Their claims come from editorial reviews and testing trackers, not from YouTube or from the providers’ own statements, so verify them for your own location and date.
