The five VPNs that current reviewers name most often for travel are NordVPN, Proton VPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access (PIA). Which one suits you depends on your devices, your destination and your budget. None of them makes you anonymous or immune to malware, and none can promise that it will work in a country that blocks VPN traffic. This guide explains how to choose, what each service is known for according to named reviewers, and where a VPN’s protection stops.
What a VPN does for a traveler, and what it doesn’t
A VPN app sends your device’s traffic through servers the provider controls. On an unsecured airport, hotel or café network, a VPN that encrypts can make your traffic unreadable to someone watching that local network. The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance puts the catch plainly: using one “just shifts trust from those networks to the VPN app provider.” The same page adds that “a VPN app generally isn’t going to make you entirely anonymous.” (FTC, “In the market for a VPN app?”)

The FTC post dates from February 2018. Its general explanation still applies, but it is not an audit of any app named below. It also warns that a VPN app can intercept your internet traffic, that some apps may not encrypt at all, and that some share information. Read the provider’s privacy terms and the permissions the app requests before you install it.
- Not anonymity: the provider, the sites you log in to and your devices still identify you.
- Not malware protection: a VPN does not stop you installing something harmful or entering a password on a fake site.
- Not a legal shield: VPN rules differ by country, and I have not verified them destination by destination. Check current official sources for the specific country before you travel.
How to choose a travel VPN
Security.org’s travel guide frames the decision around public Wi-Fi, restricted destination networks, home-country access and multiple devices (Security.org). Apply these checks in order:
#1 Best Overall
- 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
- 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
- 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
- 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
- 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
- Privacy policy and audit evidence. Look for a recent independent audit and check what was actually in scope. An audit of one component is not an audit of the whole service.
- Connection stability while switching networks. Travel means hopping between airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi, hotspots and mobile data. Look for automatic reconnection and a kill switch or equivalent that stops traffic leaking when the tunnel drops.
- Servers near your destination and in your home country. Nearby servers tend to be faster. A home-country server helps when familiar services expect you to be there.
- Device coverage. Count your phone, laptop and tablet, plus anything a partner or family member brings. Check the simultaneous-connection limit and whether every operating system you use has an app.
- Obfuscation, if you expect restrictions. Some networks try to block VPN traffic, and obfuscated connection options may help with that. This does not make prohibited use lawful or undetectable.
- Full price, not the headline rate. Compare the billing term, upfront charge, taxes, renewal price, refund conditions and device limits.
Treat streaming access as a secondary factor. It varies by service and location, can change without notice and may be restricted by the platform’s terms. Do not buy a VPN on the promise of reaching one particular library.
The five VPNs reviewers name for travel
These roles come from editorial reviews. They are those publishers’ judgments, not universal facts, and neither rankings nor feature counts guarantee how a service performs in your destination. Prices and server counts on review pages are plan-dependent and change often, so confirm them on the provider’s checkout page.

- 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.
Do you need a travel router?
For an ordinary phone and laptop, no. The app on each device is enough. A portable router with VPN client support is an optional accessory for people carrying many devices, such as a smart TV, a games console or several family phones that all connect to one hotel network. TechRadar lists router support for PIA, but compatibility depends on the exact router and configuration. Check the provider’s setup guide for your model before you buy the hardware.
Before you leave: a setup checklist
- Install and sign in on every device while you are still on a trusted home network. App store access and provider websites can be harder to reach abroad.
- Turn on automatic connection on untrusted networks, plus the kill switch if the app offers one.
- Test a protocol or obfuscation option at home, so you know what to switch to if the default fails.
- Check the refund window. If the service is bad on your first trip, you want to know how long you have to cancel.
- Keep the basics: update your operating system, use multi-factor authentication, and avoid entering sensitive details on unfamiliar sites even with a VPN on.
If the VPN won’t connect abroad
- Switch protocol, or enable the app’s obfuscation or stealth mode if it has one.
- Try a different server, ideally in a nearby country.
- Join a different network, such as your phone’s hotspot, to see whether the Wi-Fi is blocking VPN traffic.
- Contact the provider’s support. If the destination actively restricts VPN use, the legal risk may outweigh the benefit. Check current official guidance for that country before you keep trying.
The Bottom Line
Shortlist NordVPN, Proton VPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and PIA, then choose by the full price over the billing term, your device count, server coverage and audit evidence, using the reviewers’ picks only as a starting point. Use the VPN on public Wi-Fi as one layer alongside updates and multi-factor authentication, not as a substitute for them.
