The strongest choice depends on whether you need a Dutch IP address while abroad, privacy on public Wi-Fi, access to streaming services, or support for several devices. This comparison uses provider information and rankings published by Consumentenbond, Security.org, and Comparitech; those sources do not use one shared testing method, so their rankings are not interchangeable.
How to choose a VPN for the Netherlands
Start with the job you need the VPN to do. A Dutch server can give you a Dutch IP address when you are abroad, but it cannot guarantee access to a particular Dutch broadcaster or streaming catalogue. Similarly, a VPN can make your traffic less visible to the local network or internet provider, but it does not make you anonymous or replace device security.

- Location: Check that the provider offers Dutch servers if you need a Dutch IP. If you want another country’s services while in the Netherlands, check for servers in that country too.
- Privacy evidence: Read the logging policy and look for independent examinations that state what was inspected and when. An audit is evidence about a defined review, not a guarantee that a service is risk-free.
- Devices: Confirm that the provider has apps for your operating systems and supports the number of simultaneous connections you need.
- Streaming: Treat a reviewer’s successful access as a dated test result, not a promise that it will continue. Streaming services may block VPN connections.
- Price: Compare the full initial term, renewal rate, refund conditions, and any device limits. A low monthly equivalent may depend on paying upfront for a long subscription.
Consumentenbond says it does not publish a comparative speed ranking because performance varies by country and time. Its July 2026 guidance says a consumer should not need to spend more than €75 per year; that is the association’s recommendation, not an independently established price ceiling. It also notes that advertised temporary discounts commonly range from 60% to 80%, with larger promotions sometimes appearing around Black Friday or through cashback. The providers below appear in one or more of the cited 2026 comparisons. The category labels describe the source’s framing, not a common test or a definitive overall rank. Server totals and prices can change, and a figure from one comparison should not be treated as directly comparable with another source’s count.

Which option fits your use?
For a Dutch IP address abroad
Choose a provider that explicitly offers Dutch servers, then confirm that your intended broadcaster accepts VPN connections. Comparitech identifies Dutch IP access as a use case for watching Dutch channels while abroad, but it also warns that streaming services often block VPNs, particularly free services. A Dutch IP is a location signal, not a guarantee of access.
For privacy on local networks
Look beyond a “no logs” slogan. Check the policy, the provider’s jurisdiction, and whether independent reviews examined the logging systems or controls relevant to the claim. NordVPN’s published 2024 report and its stated sequence of Deloitte reviews provide specific material to inspect; neither should be read as a blanket assurance about every product feature or future operation. Consumentenbond’s broader advice is that VPNs can benefit privacy but are not a miracle cure and offer few benefits for online security in general. For streaming while in the Netherlands
Separate two goals: connecting to Dutch TV from abroad and connecting to a foreign catalogue while physically in the Netherlands. A provider may support the necessary exit country without being accepted by the service you want to watch. Reviewers’ access tests are time-bound, and catalogue access can change when streaming services update their blocking systems.
For a free starting point
Consumentenbond lists Proton VPN’s free tier, but free VPNs may have restrictions and are often blocked by streaming services, according to Comparitech. Check the free plan’s current locations, data limits, device support, and terms before relying on it for a specific task.

What the rankings can—and cannot—tell you
The 2026 comparison pages do not produce one agreed top five. Security.org and Comparitech name overlapping but different providers and assign different positions. Comparitech says it tested more than 70 VPN services for its January 9, 2026 article; that scope describes its own review process. Consumentenbond provides consumer guidance and a July 2026 price snapshot rather than a comparative speed test. Privacy claims also have technical limits. A 2024 academic paper reported insufficient filtering toward internally routable networks among a majority of the VPN services it tested. That finding applies to its test cohort and does not establish that every provider in this list has the same weakness or that current versions behave identically. Before you subscribe
- Write down the locations, devices, and services you actually need.
- Verify the provider’s current Dutch and other required server locations, device apps, and simultaneous-connection policy on its official site.
- Read the privacy policy and the scope and date of any audit or independent review you intend to rely on.
- Check the total amount charged for the initial term, the renewal rate, refund terms, and whether the advertised discount applies only to the first term.
- If streaming matters, test during the refund period where allowed, and understand that access may change after the test.
A VPN-compatible router can be useful if you want to route home-network devices through a VPN, but it is not required for a subscription. Router support depends on the provider’s setup instructions, supported protocol, and the router’s firmware; verify compatibility before buying hardware.
