A VPN is not a ping reducer. It adds a network route between your console or PC and the internet, and that route can make your latency worse. It helps only when a different route happens to be shorter or more stable for your particular connection and Fortnite subregion. The five options below are a sourced shortlist for players who want to test that for themselves: NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), and Windscribe Free.
What ping is, and why a VPN rarely fixes it
Epic Games defines latency, or ping, as the round-trip time for data to travel between your device and a Fortnite server. According to Epic’s latency and ping troubleshooting page, the main factors are network congestion, routing, and which match server matchmaking selects. Matchmaking can choose among subregions, so your in-game subregion preference also matters.

A VPN touches only one of those factors: routing. Your traffic goes to the VPN server first and then on to Fortnite, so the path changes. Whether that path is faster depends on where the VPN server sits relative to your home connection and the Fortnite server, and on how congested each hop is. None of the providers in this shortlist can promise a lower ping in general.
The most useful numbers available come from Security.org’s 2026 Fortnite comparison, which ran its own speed tests. These are that publisher’s test observations, taken on its test setup, not measurements made for this article, and they are not universal properties of these services.

Security.org says it reviewed more than 50 VPNs and ran 300 speed tests for its overall methodology. That context matters less than the single-setup caveat: the publisher also describes a one-time NordVPN test in which results differed substantially between two computers. Treat any one run as a starting point, not a verdict.
The five options, one by one
NordVPN
Security.org ranks NordVPN first in its Fortnite comparison and reports console use through a router. Its 78.3 ms average is within 0.3 ms of Proton VPN’s 78 ms, a gap that a single test setup cannot separate. If NordVPN is your choice, the decision should rest on your own before-and-after ping, not on the ranking.
Surfshark
Security.org includes Surfshark and its Fortnite page highlights IP concealment as a benefit against DDoS exposure. Surfshark’s own page is candid that VPNs can add latency and that compatibility varies. Its 135.8 ms average was the highest of the four Security.org measured, so it is the option most likely to need a close check before you commit.

Proton VPN
Security.org names Proton VPN its beginner pick. Its free option is described as unlimited data, but locations and simultaneous connections are restricted. The evidence here does not show that the free tier delivers competitive Fortnite performance, so if you use it, test it under the same conditions you would play under.
Private Internet Access
Security.org includes PIA for its server selection and describes console setup through a router. A broad server list does not establish a low-ping route to any particular Fortnite subregion, so the number of locations is not a reason to expect a better ping. Check current plan pricing and support details directly with the provider, since these change.
Windscribe Free
Windscribe’s Fortnite VPN page says its free plan offers 10 GB per month and may work for light gaming or testing. That is a provider statement. Windscribe has not been independently compared for Fortnite performance in the sources reviewed here, so the free plan is best treated as a way to run your own test at no cost, not as a proven speed option.

Fix the connection before you add a VPN
Epic’s troubleshooting order is the cheapest way to improve ping, and it should come before any paid tool. Work through these steps in order and retest after each one:

- Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection.
- Avoid large downloads, uploads, and cloud backups while you play.
- Set an appropriate subregion preference in Fortnite’s in-game settings. Epic’s page explains the options and which subregions matchmaking can use.
- Turn on router QoS or a gaming mode if your router has one, so game traffic gets priority when the connection is busy.
- Check for packet loss and jitter. Epic’s support guidance states that packet loss consistently above about 1% can cause problems (Epic Games, undated support guidance, accessed 2026).
Epic also cautions that ICMP ping tests do not necessarily mirror Fortnite’s gameplay traffic, which runs over UDP. A normal-looking ping test therefore does not rule out every network problem.
How to test whether a VPN helps your connection
Only test a VPN after the steps above, and keep the test controlled so that the result is about the route, not about the time of day or a background download.

- Record a baseline. Use Epic’s subregion ping endpoints and the Windows or macOS test instructions on Epic’s latency page, and note your in-game ping across several sessions at the times you normally play.
- Connect to a VPN server close to your Fortnite subregion. A server that is geographically far away is unlikely to help and may hurt.
- Repeat the same tests and the same number of sessions with the VPN connected.
- Compare stability as well as the average. Look at packet loss and jitter, not only the number on the scoreboard.
- Keep the VPN only if the improvement is consistent across sessions. If the result is mixed, the default route is fine and the subscription is not worth it for gaming.
Using a VPN on PlayStation and Xbox
A console cannot usually run a VPN app the way a PC or phone can, so the setup is more indirect. Security.org says the services it compared support consoles through a router VPN. ExpressVPN’s Fortnite page describes a different route: PlayStation and Xbox users can share a connection from a PC or Mac over Ethernet or through a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- VPN-enabled router: Check the exact router model’s VPN client support and firmware documentation before you buy or configure one. Not every router supports a native VPN client, and a router with one may require specific settings.
- PC or Mac sharing: Run the VPN on the computer and share its connection to the console over Ethernet or a Wi-Fi hotspot. This adds a hop, so retest your ping afterward.
- Router prioritization: QoS or gaming mode still applies on a VPN-routed setup, since the bottleneck may be your home connection rather than the VPN itself.
Is using a VPN with Fortnite allowed?
Epic’s Terms of Service, last updated September 10, 2026, prohibit cheats and attempts to tamper with, disrupt, or circumvent gameplay-integrity tools. The cited terms do not say that all VPN use is banned, and they do not promise that VPN use is risk-free. Epic’s section 4 states the spirit of the rules plainly: “Licensed Products are meant to be an enjoyable experience for everyone, and we expect everyone to play fair and follow the rules of the game.”
In practice, a VPN for ping or privacy is not the same as using one to get around a restriction or gain an advantage. Do not use a VPN to evade a ban or restriction, to gain an unfair advantage, or to break local law or the terms of any service you use. A VPN does not guarantee that an account will never be actioned.

What a VPN does and does not do for privacy
A VPN changes the IP address other players and services see, and encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server. Those are the provider claims and the basic mechanism. Several limits apply:
- It can help conceal your IP address from other players. It does not make you anonymous to every service you use.
- It does not protect your account from phishing, password reuse, or malware on your device.
- It does not stop denial-of-service attacks on its own. Concealing an IP address is a different claim from preventing an attack, and providers such as ExpressVPN and Windscribe discuss DDoS exposure in marketing terms rather than as a guarantee.
Which option fits your setup
- You want to spend nothing: Start with Windscribe Free or Proton VPN Free and run your own before-and-after test. Expect the caps and location limits to matter.
- You play on a PC or phone: Test NordVPN, Proton VPN, or PIA first, since Security.org measured them under a common setup. Use the procedure above, not the table, to decide.
- You play on a console: Plan for a router with VPN support or a PC or Mac sharing setup, and confirm compatibility before you pay.
- Your ping is already stable and low: A VPN is unlikely to improve it, and the subscription cost is better spent elsewhere.
Provider names, plan limits, and pricing change often. Check each provider’s current terms on its own website before you subscribe.
