The best pirate game depends on what you want from the fantasy: a memorable solo story, a crew to sail with, a freeform privateering sandbox, or a comic puzzle adventure. This ranking favors games that make pirate life central to play, offer a distinctive core experience, and remain accessible on current platforms. The order is an editorial judgment, not an objective universal score.
How this ranking works
These five games approach piracy in different ways, so the ranking weighs how much you sail, explore, fight, or otherwise live as a pirate; how distinctive the central play experience is; whether the game suits solo or crew play; the strength of its story and setting; and its stated platform availability. Those are comparison criteria, not published measurements. A different preference—especially for multiplayer or comedy—could change the order that feels right for you.

1. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
Best for a story-led pirate adventure
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag takes the top spot for combining a Caribbean pirate setting with a focused action-adventure story. Ubisoft describes the original as a pirate action-adventure released in 2013. It is the strongest pick here if you want a defined protagonist and narrative rather than a world whose stories are primarily made with friends or through your own sandbox choices. Resynced follows Edward Kenway in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy and lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC storefronts. Check the relevant store for the edition and regional availability you intend to buy; the remake’s listings should not be taken as a platform list for the 2013 original. 2. Sea of Thieves
Best for sailing with a crew
Sea of Thieves is an open-world pirate adventure built around shared voyages, with story-driven Tall Tales for players looking for a more directed narrative. It ranks just below Black Flag because its crew-based appeal is exceptional, but depends more on whether you want shared-world play than on a single authored pirate story. The official site lists Xbox, Windows, PlayStation 5, and Steam. Sea of Thieves official site.
Platform details matter if you expect progress to carry over. The Steam page specifically describes progress carrying among Steam, Microsoft Store, and Xbox One copies; that statement should not be generalized to every platform or version. 3. Sid Meier’s Pirates!
Best for open-ended privateering
Sid Meier’s Pirates! is the sandbox choice: rather than making one authored story the main attraction, it lets you decide what kind of life to pursue across the Caribbean—as a marauder or a privateer seeking riches. That freedom makes it the best fit for players who want to set their own priorities and define their own pirate career. Steam’s description puts the choice plainly: “Sail the Caribbean, marauding all on the high seas or ally your ship and crew as a privateer in search of riches – the life you choose is up to you.” Sid Meier’s Pirates! on Steam.
4. LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean
Best for light, accessible licensed adventure
LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean adapts the Pirates of the Caribbean world as a TT Games action-adventure in the LEGO style. Its place on this list reflects a different strength from the three games above: a recognizable licensed setting and a lighter presentation, rather than a pirate-life sandbox or crew-focused shared world. It is the natural alternative if comic adventure appeals more than a serious action story or open-ended privateering. LEGO’s Pirates of the Caribbean video game page.

5. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
Best for pirate comedy and puzzles
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition earns its spot by treating piracy as the setting for comic, puzzle-led storytelling. It is the clearest pick for someone who would rather solve problems and enjoy jokes than spend the bulk of play in a sailing or combat loop. That different emphasis also explains why it sits below the more direct pirate-adventure and privateering choices in a ranking focused on the breadth of pirate play. | Game | Best fit | What defines its pirate fantasy |
|---|---|---|
| Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag | Players who want a story-led solo action-adventure | A Caribbean pirate setting centered on a protagonist and narrative |
| Sea of Thieves | Players who want to sail with a crew | Open-world adventures, shared voyages, and story-driven Tall Tales |
| Sid Meier’s Pirates! | Players who want freedom to choose their career | Sandbox sailing as a marauder or privateer |
| LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean | Players drawn to a lighter licensed adventure | The Pirates of the Caribbean world in LEGO-style action-adventure |
| The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition | Players who prefer puzzles and comedy | Pirate-themed comic storytelling |
If a conventional pirate adventure is the priority, start with Black Flag. Choose Sea of Thieves when the crew experience matters most, or Sid Meier’s Pirates! when you want to decide what kind of privateer to become. The last two are strong choices when the specific appeal is a lighter licensed adventure or puzzle comedy rather than a traditional sailing-centered game.
