These five hobbies offer a small first activity each, with the gear and conditions to check before you begin.
Five hobbies to try with gadgets you may already own
| Hobby | Starter gadget | First activity | Where it happens | Defined project submission? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citizen science | Smartphone or laptop | Choose an eligible project in NASA’s directory and try its first task. | Often online; project requirements vary. | Yes for projects that request contributions; check each listing. |
| Beginner astronomy | Naked eye; optional computer or planisphere | Identify a few visible constellations or follow the Moon. | Outdoors; visibility depends on conditions. | No submission is needed to enjoy observing. |
| Wildlife watching and field notes | Notebook or journal; optional binoculars | Record which birds you see and where you saw them. | Outdoors. | Not established by the cited activity sources. |
| Camera-based nature observation | Camera, including a phone camera if it meets project needs | Read a project’s directions, then photograph the requested clouds or phenomena when conditions allow. | Outdoors, at specified times or under particular conditions. | Yes; NASA’s projects describe defined observation and submission activities. |
| Sound or tech tinkering | Smartphone or internet-connected device | Try a smartphone amplifier activity or explore waveforms with an online oscilloscope. | At home or online. | No citizen-science submission path is established for these activities. |
1. Try citizen science on a phone or laptop
Citizen science lets people contribute observations or analysis to research projects. NASA’s project directory includes activities such as classifying galaxy images, searching telescope data, and observing clouds, with some projects accepting smartphone or laptop participation.

Your first step
- Open NASA’s project directory and choose an activity that interests you.
- Read that project’s current requirements before starting: check device compatibility, location rules, equipment needs, and how it asks participants to contribute.
- Try one task and see whether the project’s format suits you before committing more time.
The directory also includes projects that require a telescope, camera, special equipment, or a particular geographic location. A project appearing on the directory does not mean it is available to every participant or works on every device.

2. Learn the night sky without starting with a telescope
Beginner astronomy can start with your eyes alone. The UK-focused beginner guide from the Royal Astronomical Society recommends tools such as a planisphere, monthly sky guide, or computer software to help you understand how the sky changes over the night and across seasons.

Your first step
Pick one clear evening and try to identify a few visible constellations, or follow the Moon’s changing appearance over several nights. A simple sky guide or astronomy software can help you know where to look.
When binoculars help
Binoculars are optional, not a prerequisite. The Society describes good-quality binoculars as a relatively economical alternative to moving straight to a telescope and usually recommends 8×40 or 10×50 sizes. Larger binoculars can be difficult to hold steady. Viewing faint or diffuse objects also depends on observing conditions; poor urban sites limit what you can see.

3. Keep a wildlife-watching journal
A notebook can turn an ordinary walk or a view from your window into a simple observation hobby. Discovery World’s at-home activity list includes bird-watching journaling. If you already have binoculars, the Royal Astronomical Society notes that they can be useful for purposes beyond astronomy too.
Your first step
- Take a notebook outside or sit where you can watch a nearby garden, park, or street.
- Write down the birds you notice and where they appeared. Add the date or a brief description if you want to compare observations later.
- Use binoculars if they are on hand, but keep the journal as the core activity.
The cited activity sources support keeping a bird-watching journal; they do not establish a particular identification app or its accuracy. You can still make useful notes without naming every bird.

4. Give your camera a nature-observation project
A camera can be more than a way to take snapshots. NASA’s directory includes Spritacular, which invites people with a camera to submit photographs of colorful flashes above thunderstorms, and Space Cloud Watch, which asks participants to photograph clouds around dawn or dusk.
Your first step
Open the project listing, read its observation and submission instructions, and decide whether its subject, timing, and requirements fit your situation. Follow the project’s directions for what to photograph and how to submit it.
Rank #4
These are specific observation projects, not a promise that a particular phone camera will capture a particular phenomenon. Conditions, equipment, timing, and project rules all matter.

If you enjoy seeing how everyday devices work, start with a small experiment rather than a complex electronics build. Discovery World’s at-home activities include smartphone sound amplification, an online oscilloscope, Morse code, and coding resources.

Your first step
Choose the smartphone amplifier activity or open an online oscilloscope and follow its instructions to explore waveforms. Either offers a hands-on way to notice how sound or signals can be represented and manipulated.
These are examples of accessible at-home tinkering, not evidence that every electronics project is safe or suitable for any device. Follow the activity’s directions and avoid improvising with powered hardware or unfamiliar components.
Choosing a first project
Start with the device and setting that fit your day, rather than buying gear to match a hobby label. A phone can connect you to online citizen-science tasks or serve as a camera; an older laptop may support online activities or astronomy software. The five ideas overlap, so you can move between them as your interests change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Want a defined contribution? Browse NASA’s listings and verify the project’s current eligibility and submission process.
- Prefer a quiet solo activity? Try naked-eye sky watching or keep wildlife notes.
- Like making observations with a purpose? Check NASA’s camera-based projects and their exact instructions.
- Want to experiment indoors? Try a sound or waveform activity using the device and directions it specifies.
Radio astronomy is a possible later step, but it is not a drawer-gadget starting point. NASA’s Radio JOVE page, updated in 2026, lists a radio telescope kit and antenna parts, a Windows computer with internet, and a field away from cities; its $300–$500 figure is NASA’s dated total equipment estimate, not a current market quote or a general price for radio astronomy. See NASA’s Radio JOVE page for the project’s requirements.
