Soundcore, EarFun, Nothing and JBL each have specific headphone or earbud models that can rival Sony on value, battery life, sound customization or another focused strength. That does not make any of them a universal Sony replacement: performance varies by model, and the available comparisons do not show that all five match Sony in noise cancellation, sound, calls and comfort at once.
Audio-Technica belongs on the list only for a different use case—wired listening or production—rather than as a verified current rival to Sony’s consumer noise-cancelling headphones. The picks below are organized by what they do well, with the relevant trade-offs attached.

How to compare these brands with Sony
Compare the same kind of product and the same job: earbuds against earbuds, and over-ear headphones against over-ear headphones. A budget earbud that offers strong value is not necessarily a substitute for a premium Sony model if your priority is top-tier noise cancellation, call quality or a particular comfort fit.

1. Soundcore: a value-focused earbud shortlist
Soundcore is the clearest place to start if you want earbuds that offer a lot for the money. RTINGS’ 2026 wireless-earbud guide, updated August 18, 2026, names the Space A40 as its budget pick and the Liberty 5 Pro as a mid-range pick. RTINGS says the Liberty 5 Pro comes close to the Sony WF-1000XM6 in noise cancellation, though it attenuates bass and treble less effectively than the Sony. That is a specific comparison, not evidence that it beats Sony overall.
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide gives the Space A40 an overall score of 73, and lists the Life Q20 and Q20i at 72. In the same guide, Sony WF-1000XM5 scores 86 overall. These are scores for individual models in the guide, not brand ratings or proof of an apples-to-apples matchup across products.

- LONG BATTERY LIFE: With up to 50-hour battery life and quick charging, you’ll have enough power for multi-day road trips and long festival weekends.(USB Type-C Cable included)
- HIGH QUALITY SOUND: Great sound quality customizable to your music preference with EQ Custom on the Sony | Headphones Connect App.
- LIGHT & COMFORTABLE: The lightweight build and swivel earcups gently slip on and off, while the adjustable headband, cushion and soft ear pads give you all-day comfort.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR CALLS: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.
- MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.
Consider Soundcore if
- You want to prioritize value and are comparing earbuds in a similar price tier.
- You are interested in the Liberty 5 Pro’s near-Sony ANC performance but can accept weaker bass and treble attenuation than the WF-1000XM6.
2. EarFun: long stated battery life in an over-ear option
EarFun’s Wave Pro X is an over-ear option for buyers who put long playback time high on the list. TechRadar reported that it became available in August 2026 at $129.99 in the US and £119.99 in the UK. EarFun estimates 90 hours of playback with ANC off and 50 hours with ANC on; TechRadar’s reviewer said testing broadly matched those estimates. Those figures are the company’s estimates as reported in the review, not the result of an independent standardized battery comparison.
TechRadar positioned the Wave Pro X as a lower-priced alternative to more premium headphones and mentioned Soundcore Space 2 and Nothing Headphone (a) as alternatives with different strengths. Its review does not establish that the Wave Pro X matches Sony across ANC, sound, calls and comfort, so treat the battery claim as its clearest documented draw rather than a blanket performance verdict. Read the TechRadar Wave Pro X review for the model-specific assessment.

- LONG BATTERY LIFE: With up to 50-hour battery life and quick charging, you’ll have enough power for multi-day road trips and long festival weekends. (USB Type-C Cable included)
Consider EarFun if
- You want over-ear headphones and long claimed playback between charges is a priority.
- You are willing to assess ANC, fit, sound and call quality separately rather than assuming battery life predicts them.
3. Nothing: feature-rich earbuds with customization
Nothing’s earbuds make sense for buyers who value connectivity and controls as much as noise reduction. TechRadar’s cheap-headphones guide describes Nothing Ear (a) as supporting Bluetooth 5.3, LDAC, multipoint connectivity, a low-lag gaming mode, in-ear detection and a “Find My Earbuds” feature. It also notes the model lacks wireless charging and spatial audio.
Do not transfer those Ear (a) features to every Nothing product. RTINGS’ 2026 earbud guide discusses the Ear (3a) separately, noting expanded sound customization while finding its noise isolation weaker than the Soundcore Space A40. If blocking noise is your main reason to replace a Sony pair, that difference matters more than a broader EQ menu.

- WORLD’S BEST IN-EAR ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Removes up to 2x more unwanted noise than AirPods Pro 2* so you can stay fully immersed in the moment.*
- BREAKTHROUGH AUDIO PERFORMANCE — Experience breathtaking, three-dimensional audio with AirPods Pro 3. A new acoustic architecture delivers transformed bass, detailed clarity so you can hear every instrument, and stunningly vivid vocals.

- LIVE TRANSLATION — Communicate across language barriers using Live Translation,* enabled by Apple Intelligence.*
- EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*
Consider Nothing if
- You want the Ear (a)’s listed connectivity and convenience features and accept the absence of wireless charging and spatial audio.
- You are evaluating the Ear (3a) specifically for sound customization, while accounting for its relative noise-isolation weakness versus Space A40.
4. JBL: balanced out-of-box sound and battery, with ANC compromises
For a budget-earbud comparison, RTINGS’ 2026 wireless-earbud guide says JBL Vibe Beam 2 has longer continuous battery life and more balanced out-of-box sound than Soundcore P31i. The trade-offs are weaker ANC and less effective handling of microphone noise. This makes JBL a plausible fit if the first two strengths matter more to you than the latter two, but it is not a demonstrated across-the-board replacement for Sony.
Consumer Reports lists the over-ear JBL Live 660NC at 71 overall in its 2026 Buying Guide. That is a different model and format from the Vibe Beam 2, so the score should not be used to rank JBL earbuds or the brand as a whole.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Consider JBL if
- You are comparing the Vibe Beam 2 with similar earbuds and prefer its out-of-box balance and longer continuous battery life to the Soundcore P31i.
- You can tolerate weaker ANC and microphone-noise handling than that Soundcore model.
5. Audio-Technica: a qualified choice for production, not a direct Sony swap
Audio-Technica is relevant if your search includes wired or production headphones rather than only consumer wireless ANC models. RTINGS’ 2026 headphone-brand guide says Audio-Technica or Beyerdynamic may offer better value than Shure for some audio producers. That supports a narrow production-oriented recommendation; it does not identify a current Audio-Technica consumer ANC model that can be directly compared with Sony’s wireless noise-cancelling line.
For studio or production use, first identify the job—monitoring, editing or casual listening—and then compare the specific model’s design and connectivity with your equipment. Without a verified model-to-model consumer ANC comparison, Audio-Technica should not be treated as a fifth all-purpose Sony alternative.
Which one fits your priority?
| Priority | Model to investigate | What the evidence supports | Important trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Value-oriented earbuds | Soundcore Space A40 | RTINGS’ budget pick in its 2026 earbud guide; Consumer Reports score of 73 overall in its 2026 guide. | The score is model-specific and does not establish Sony-equivalent performance. |
| Mid-range earbud ANC | Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro | RTINGS says its ANC comes close to the Sony WF-1000XM6. | RTINGS finds weaker bass and treble attenuation than the Sony. |
| Long-playback over-ear headphones | EarFun Wave Pro X | EarFun estimates 90 hours ANC off and 50 hours ANC on; TechRadar reported testing broadly matched the estimates. | Company estimates, not an independent standardized comparison; price and availability cited by TechRadar were reported for August 2026 in the US and UK. |
| Connectivity features | Nothing Ear (a) | TechRadar lists Bluetooth 5.3, LDAC, multipoint, gaming mode, in-ear detection and Find My Earbuds. | No wireless charging or spatial audio, according to the guide. |
| Sound balance and continuous battery life | JBL Vibe Beam 2 | RTINGS says it has longer continuous battery life and more balanced out-of-box sound than Soundcore P31i. | Weaker ANC and microphone-noise handling than the P31i. |
| Production-oriented listening | Audio-Technica (specific model to be chosen for the job) | RTINGS identifies it as a potential value option for some audio producers relative to Shure. | The cited evidence does not establish a current consumer ANC model for direct Sony comparison. |
Make the final choice by the weakness you can live with
For earbuds, start with Soundcore if price and ANC are central, Nothing if its connectivity features or customization matter more, and JBL if you value the Vibe Beam 2’s reported sound balance and battery advantage over the P31i. For over-ear headphones, EarFun’s clearest documented case is the Wave Pro X’s long stated playback time at a lower reported price. Audio-Technica is a separate production-oriented path, not a like-for-like pick in that consumer shortlist.
Before buying, verify the exact model and current regional price, then compare fit, noise cancellation, sound, microphone performance, battery and device compatibility against the Sony product you would otherwise choose. The available evidence supports focused alternatives, not one universal winner.
