The session has passed: the index later closed higher, so these are historical catalysts and forecasts, not a guide to the next Friday’s market.
What the Friday watch list was—and how the market finished
The Motley Fool Australia published its list before the market opened on Friday, 2 October 2026. It followed a 2% fall on Thursday, 1 October, when the S&P/ASX 200 closed at 8,614.4. The article asked whether the index could rebound and finish the week strongly. The original article is useful for its pre-open expectations; a later weekly recap records what followed.
According to that recap, the ASX 200 closed Friday at 8,682.1, up 0.79% from Thursday’s close, and ended the week up 0.20%. The result was consistent with the anticipated higher open, but it is not the same as the futures indication: futures are a pre-market signal, whereas the close is the outcome after trading. The recap also said technology led the week and healthcare lagged.
1. A possible rebound in the ASX 200
Before Friday’s open, SPI futures indicated a rise of 48 points, or 0.55%, as reported by The Motley Fool Australia. The same article noted modest overnight gains in the US: the Dow Jones rose 0.05%, the S&P 500 0.2% and the Nasdaq 0.05%. These were overnight index moves and a futures-based opening indication—not settled Friday prices or a guarantee of how the Australian market would trade.

2. Higher oil prices and energy shares
The Motley Fool Australia, attributing the figures to Bloomberg, reported WTI crude at US$93.13 a barrel, up 3%, and Brent crude at US$102.57, up 4.6%. The report linked the rise to news that the United States had sent a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East. That is the article’s attributed explanation, not proof of a single cause.
It identified Santos (ASX: STO) and Woodside Energy (ASX: WDS) as shares that could respond to firmer crude prices. Higher oil can matter to energy producers, but a commodity move does not determine a company’s share price on its own; the figures describe that overnight period, not current prices or a certain trading outcome.

3. Bell Potter’s new Megaport coverage
The article reported that Bell Potter initiated coverage of Megaport (ASX: MP1) with a Buy rating and an A$27.00 target. The quoted target and rating are the broker’s opinion, not a result reported by Megaport or an independently established fair value.
Bell Potter’s comparison, as quoted in the article, was: “In our view Megaport looks value trading on an FY28 EV/EBITDA multiple of c.7x when the median multiple of the domestic comps is c.15x (based on FY28 forecasts) and international comps is c.11x (based on 2027 forecasts).” EV/EBITDA compares enterprise value with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation. The comparison depends on broker forecasts and the selected peer groups; it should not be read as a promise that Megaport will trade at a particular valuation.

4. Gold’s overnight rise and potential miner reaction
The Motley Fool Australia, citing CNBC, reported gold futures up 0.5% to US$4,207.6 per ounce. Its account said easing US Treasury yields supported gold. Evolution Mining (ASX: EVN) and Newmont (ASX: NEM) were named as producers whose shares could respond. These are dated overnight figures and a possible market relationship, not evidence that either share necessarily rose in response.
5. Bell Potter’s lower Netwealth target
The article said Bell Potter retained its Buy rating on Netwealth (ASX: NWL) while cutting its target from A$30 to A$25. The broker’s cited reasoning included interest rates, a lower valuation multiple, a class-action provision, flows below FY27 guidance and its historical experience of client withdrawals. The rating and target belong to Bell Potter; neither is a company result nor an endorsement by the article’s publisher.

Broader market context reported after the session
The Saturday recap also reported that the Reserve Bank of Australia raised the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.60% on Tuesday, 29 September, and that August CPI was 4.0% year over year, up from 3.5% in July. These figures are reported by Swingfolio Research; the recap is not the primary RBA or Australian Bureau of Statistics release.
All five original watch points mixed different kinds of information: an index-futures indication, commodity prices, and broker views on two listed companies. Futures and commodity quotes describe a particular moment; ratings and targets express broker analysis. Keeping those categories—and their dates—separate is essential when reading a historical market list.
