There is no single monitor in this guide that measures every aspect of air quality both indoors and outdoors. Some options are indoor devices that show outdoor data in an app; others are pairs of separate indoor and weatherproof outdoor sensors. Choose based on the pollutant you need to track and whether you need physical measurements at both locations.
These are consumer monitors for trends and awareness, not substitutes for regulatory monitoring or a complete assessment of indoor air safety. The products below are organized by use case and stated capabilities, not by independent head-to-head test results.

What “indoor and outdoor” means in this guide
A monitor can be called an indoor/outdoor option for two quite different reasons. A paired system measures air with separate devices in each location. An indoor monitor may instead display local outdoor readings or comparisons supplied through its app; that does not mean the device itself can be placed outside.

PM2.5 is fine particulate matter; CO2, VOCs, radon, temperature, and humidity are different measurements. A device only detects the factors its sensors are designed to detect. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cautions that low-cost monitors are not equivalent to the outdoor regulatory monitoring network and that indoor performance information is limited for some devices. EPA guidance on air sensor performance explains these limits.

Five options, organized by what they measure
Product capabilities below are manufacturer-stated specifications. They are not results from a common independent test, so the order is a practical match to use cases rather than a claim that one product is most accurate or best overall.
1. IQAir AirVisual Indoor & Outdoor Monitor Bundle — coordinated two-location comparison
This is a paired system, not one monitor that moves between indoors and outdoors. IQAir describes two sensors reporting simultaneously to the AirVisual app for indoor/outdoor comparison, with a weatherproof design for its outdoor sensor. Check the current bundle contents and exact product name on IQAir’s bundle page before purchasing; its present composition should be confirmed rather than assumed.

2. AirGradient ONE + Open Air — separate indoor and outdoor monitors with dashboard comparison
AirGradient ONE is an indoor monitor specified to cover PM2.5, CO2, TVOCs, NOx, temperature, and humidity. Open Air is a separate outdoor monitor in a weatherproof enclosure, designed for wall or pole mounting and specified for the same six factors. AirGradient describes dashboard comparisons between indoor and outdoor monitoring. These are distinct devices; the manufacturer’s pages do not establish that they are sold as one bundle or at a combined price. See AirGradient ONE and AirGradient Open Air.

4. Airthings View Plus — indoor monitoring including radon
View Plus is an indoor monitor for radon, PM2.5, CO2, VOCs, humidity, temperature, and pressure. Airthings explicitly says not to place it outdoors, so it is not a physical outdoor sensor; any outdoor information in an app should not be confused with an outdoor measurement from this device. Airthings’ View-series specifications, dated April 13, 2026, state a CO2 range of 400–5,000 ppm and a PM2.5 range of 0–200 μg/m³, with stated error varying by range. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative results. See Airthings View Plus and its View-series specifications.
5. IQAir AirVisual Pro — indoor trends with app-based outdoor comparison
AirVisual Pro is an indoor monitor specified for PM2.5, CO2, temperature, TVOC, and humidity, with a display and app. IQAir also describes outdoor comparisons in the app, but its specifications say “Weatherproof: No.” Treat it as an indoor device, not an outdoor monitor. See IQAir’s AirVisual Pro page.

How to compare the options
| Option | Location capability | Stated measurement coverage | Outdoor suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| IQAir AirVisual Indoor & Outdoor Bundle | Two sensors report to the app for indoor/outdoor comparison | Not stated on the cited bundle page | Outdoor sensor is described as weatherproof; confirm current bundle contents |
| AirGradient ONE + Open Air | Separate indoor and outdoor devices; dashboard comparison | PM2.5, CO2, TVOCs, NOx, temperature, humidity | Open Air has a weatherproof enclosure; ONE is the indoor device |
| PurpleAir Classic Plus | Outdoor monitor | PM2.5 | Designed for outdoor monitoring |
| Airthings View Plus | Indoor monitor | Radon, PM2.5, CO2, VOCs, humidity, temperature, pressure | Do not place outdoors |
| IQAir AirVisual Pro | Indoor monitor with app-based outdoor comparison | PM2.5, CO2, temperature, TVOC, humidity | Not weatherproof |
Coverage and location capability are not the same as accuracy. The EPA notes that indoor readings can be affected by placement, time in use, data processing, temperature, humidity, and mixtures of contaminants, and that widely accepted indoor performance criteria are lacking for most low-cost monitors. It also states: “The cost of a monitor does not necessarily indicate how well it will perform.”

Set up an indoor monitor for more useful readings
- Follow the model’s manual first. Specific placement or installation directions for that device take precedence over general advice.
- Choose a representative location. EPA general guidance suggests breathing-zone height, about 3–6 feet, where the monitor has unobstructed airflow.
- Keep it away from local influences. Avoid corners, obstructed spots, and immediate proximity to windows, doors, HVAC ducts, or pollutant sources and sinks such as toasters and air cleaners. A reading right beside one of these may reflect that local condition rather than the room more broadly.
- Interpret the reading as a measurement of specific factors. A PM2.5 reading does not tell you the radon level, and an alert is not an emergency warning or a regulatory measurement. EPA’s air sensors in the home guidance provides further context on consumer monitors and placement.
Which type should you choose?
- You need simultaneous measurements indoors and outdoors: Choose a coordinated pair or bundle with a sensor intended for outdoor conditions. Verify that the outdoor unit is weatherproof and that the current package includes both devices.
- You mainly want indoor trends and an outdoor reference: An indoor monitor with app-based outdoor comparison may be sufficient, but it does not physically measure your outdoor air.
- You want a specific pollutant: Check that the device explicitly lists that sensor. For example, View Plus lists radon, whereas PurpleAir Classic Plus is presented as an outdoor PM2.5 option.
- You need an outdoor monitor: Do not put an indoor-only device outside. AirVisual Pro is not weatherproof, and Airthings says View Plus should never be placed outdoors; Open Air is explicitly described as weatherproof.
