Usually, you do not need a special cable labeled “4K HDMI” simply to send your television’s sound to a soundbar. For TV apps or devices connected to the TV, run one HDMI cable from the television’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s matching HDMI OUT (TV ARC/eARC) port. The cable must be suitable for the signal and length, but the words “4K” or “HDMI 2.1” on the package are not, by themselves, a requirement for ordinary audio return.
A different rule applies when a video source passes through the soundbar. In that arrangement, the bar must support the source’s resolution, refresh rate, HDR format and gaming features, and the cable must carry those video signals. Audio-return capability and 4K video passthrough are separate checks.

What “4K HDMI” actually describes
“4K HDMI” is retail shorthand, not a single technical specification. A cable is rated by its HDMI category and certification, while the connected devices determine which audio and video signals are sent. A cable can carry television audio over ARC without carrying a 4K picture at all. Conversely, a soundbar can support eARC audio yet lack the HDMI inputs and video circuitry needed to pass a 4K, 120 Hz game signal.

- Audio return: the TV sends sound from built-in apps or devices plugged into the TV back to the soundbar through ARC or eARC.
- Video passthrough: a source plugs into the soundbar’s HDMI input, and the bar sends the picture onward from its HDMI output to the TV.
ARC/eARC does not mean that the soundbar is carrying the television’s picture. It is an audio-return channel. The HDMI.org description is precise: “eARC enables the audio to a TV that originates from cable, satellite, streaming or source devices to be sent to an AVR or sound bar through a single HDMI cable.”

Identify your wiring before buying a cable
Look at where your streaming box, disc player, console or computer is connected. The correct cable and port depend on that layout, not on the television’s 4K resolution alone.
| What you want to do | Correct wiring | What the soundbar must support | Where cable capability matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use TV apps and return their sound | TV HDMI ARC/eARC to soundbar HDMI OUT (TV ARC/eARC) | ARC or eARC, matching the TV for the desired audio formats | Reliable ARC/eARC data transfer; no 4K video travels through the bar |
| Plug a device into the TV and send its sound to the bar | Source to TV; TV ARC/eARC to soundbar HDMI OUT | ARC/eARC support and compatible audio settings | The source-to-TV link carries the video; the TV-to-bar link carries returned audio |
| Plug a device into the soundbar and send picture to the TV | Source to soundbar HDMI IN; soundbar HDMI OUT to an ordinary TV HDMI input | Passthrough for the source’s resolution, refresh rate, HDR and other required features | Both HDMI cables must be rated for the video mode being transported |
Connector labels alone do not prove passthrough performance. A port marked HDMI may accept only certain formats, and a bar with one HDMI input may have different limits from a newer model with several inputs. Read the exact television and soundbar manuals before assuming that a feature is supported.
ARC versus eARC: what changes for audio
ARC
Audio Return Channel (ARC) sends television audio back to the soundbar over the HDMI connection that also carries ordinary device-control signals. It is commonly used for TV apps and for sources connected directly to the TV. Both products need ARC, and the HDMI cable must be connected to the ports specifically labeled ARC.
eARC
Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) is designed for higher-bitrate and uncompressed audio formats. HDMI.org lists support for formats that exceed the usual ARC data rate. Sony’s 2026 support guidance states that eARC provides up to 37 Mbs of data-transfer bandwidth, preserving the unit exactly as printed in that support material.
eARC requires compatible equipment at both ends for eARC features. An eARC television does not upgrade an ARC-only soundbar: the pair operates at the older ARC capability. Likewise, an eARC-capable bar cannot create eARC audio if the TV has only ARC.

What eARC does not change
eARC does not guarantee 4K passthrough. It describes the audio-return link. To pass a 4K or high-frame-rate picture through the bar, inspect the bar’s HDMI input and output specifications separately.
Choosing the HDMI cable category
Use the category recommended by the device makers for the signal you intend to carry. The label should be read together with certification and cable length; a generic “4K” claim is less useful than a recognized category.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Cable description | Where it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Standard HDMI cable | Older, lower-bandwidth equipment | Do not select it for a modern 4K video path unless the manuals explicitly say it is adequate. |
| High Speed HDMI with Ethernet | Many ARC/eARC installations and earlier 4K equipment | Sony recommends this type for eARC transfer. Existing cables may work, but eARC operation is not certified for every cable in this category. |
| Premium High Speed HDMI cable | 4K Ultra HD video playback and a video path through a soundbar | Yamaha recommends a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 3D and 4K Ultra HD playback. Choose one with Ethernet when the manufacturer specifies it. |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI cable | Highest-bandwidth HDMI modes and demanding gaming/video systems | HDMI.org says Ultra HDMI Cables are designed to support eARC and its highest-resolution modes. Verify that the soundbar and TV also support the target mode. |
HDMI.org notes that eARC might operate with Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet or High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet, but those types are not certified for eARC operation. If reliability is important, choose a certified cable category recommended by the equipment manufacturer rather than assuming that any old lead will work.
“HDMI 2.1 cable” is not a substitute for checking the actual signal. The HDMI version printed in a product listing can describe features of a device or marketing bundle; the practical question is whether the cable is certified for the bandwidth and mode you need.

- Locate the correct ports. On the TV, find the HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC. On the bar, find HDMI OUT marked TV ARC, TV eARC or a similar audio-return label. Do not use a regular HDMI input on the soundbar for this link.
- Connect one HDMI cable. Plug one end into the TV’s ARC/eARC socket and the other into the soundbar’s matching output. Select a cable category appropriate to the manuals; for a 4K video signal that also travels through this path, use the specified Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed cable.
- Turn on HDMI control if required. Manufacturers use different names for the device-control function. Enable the HDMI control/CEC option on both products when the manuals require it; this allows the TV remote to control power and volume and often activates ARC.
- Select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output. In the television’s sound menu, choose HDMI ARC or eARC rather than internal speakers or optical output.
- Choose the appropriate digital-audio mode. Set the TV to the mode recommended for your equipment, such as Auto, Bitstream or Pass-through. The exact label varies by model; use the manual’s setting for Dolby, DTS or uncompressed formats supported by both devices.
- Test a known source. Play a TV app, then a device connected to the TV. Confirm that the bar switches on, displays an input or audio indicator and produces sound without delay.
If the TV offers both ARC and eARC options, leave eARC enabled only when the soundbar supports it and the cable and settings are suitable. With an ARC-only bar, select the TV’s ARC-compatible mode.
Route a source through the soundbar only when its video limits fit
Some people connect a console, disc player or streaming device to the soundbar to reduce the number of cables running to the TV. The sequence is:
- Source HDMI OUT to soundbar HDMI IN.
- Soundbar HDMI OUT to a normal HDMI input on the TV (not necessarily the TV’s ARC/eARC port).
- Select the soundbar input for the source and the corresponding TV input for the bar.
Before using this arrangement, compare the source’s output with the bar’s published passthrough limits. Check all of the following:
- Maximum resolution, such as 4K.
- Maximum refresh rate, especially 60 Hz versus 120 Hz.
- HDR standards supported by the input and output.
- Gaming features required by the console or PC.
- Whether the bar has enough HDMI inputs for every source you intend to connect.
A bar advertised as “4K passthrough” may support 4K at one refresh rate or HDR format but not another. If the specification does not state the mode you need, treat it as unconfirmed rather than assuming compatibility.
Best wiring for consoles and high-frame-rate video
Gaming and high-frame-rate video expose passthrough limitations quickly. If the soundbar documentation does not explicitly confirm your console or PC’s resolution, refresh rate, HDR and gaming features, connect that source directly to a compatible TV input. Then send the TV’s audio back to the soundbar over ARC or eARC.

This layout keeps the picture on the TV’s shortest, least restricted path while preserving a single audio cable to the bar. It is particularly useful when the TV has a higher-spec HDMI input than the soundbar. Verify the exact capabilities of all three devices before promising a particular frame rate or HDR mode.
How to tell whether you need a new cable
- Keep the existing cable when TV audio works reliably over ARC/eARC, the cable is undamaged, and you are not routing a video signal through the soundbar.
- Replace it with a certified High Speed cable with Ethernet when the manufacturer specifies that category for eARC and your current cable causes intermittent audio, handshaking failures or loss of control.
- Choose Premium High Speed when the cable carries 4K Ultra HD video through the soundbar, following Yamaha’s guidance for 3D and 4K playback.
- Choose Ultra High Speed for a documented highest-bandwidth mode, but only after confirming that the TV and soundbar actually support that mode.
- Check length and installation if failures occur. Long runs, tight bends, wall plates and adapters can reduce reliability even when the category printed on the package looks correct. Use the shortest practical certified cable and remove unnecessary couplers while testing.
Troubleshoot a silent or unstable ARC/eARC connection
No sound at all
- Confirm that both ends are in the ports labeled ARC or eARC; a regular HDMI input will not provide audio return.
- Set the TV’s audio output to HDMI ARC/eARC and wake the soundbar from standby.
- Enable HDMI control/CEC on both devices if their manuals require it.
- Power off the TV and bar, unplug them briefly, reconnect the HDMI cable, then power the TV on first and the bar second.
- Try the TV’s Auto or Pass-through audio mode, then test a built-in app.
Sound works but advanced formats do not
Check whether both devices support the desired format and whether the TV is converting audio to a lower mode. An ARC-only link cannot deliver every eARC format. An eARC TV paired with an ARC-only bar remains ARC-limited, regardless of the cable label.
Picture disappears when a source uses the soundbar
Remove the bar from the video path temporarily: connect the source directly to the TV and use ARC/eARC for audio. If the picture returns, compare the source’s resolution, refresh rate, HDR and gaming requirements with the bar’s passthrough specification. The fault is a capability mismatch, not proof that a “4K HDMI” cable is missing.
Intermittent audio or dropouts
- Reseat both HDMI plugs and inspect for damaged connectors.
- Replace the cable with the category specified by the TV or soundbar maker.
- Remove HDMI switches, extenders and adapters during testing.
- Try a shorter certified cable.
- Update device firmware only when the manufacturer provides an official update and instructions.
A practical compatibility checklist
Use this checklist before buying either a cable or a new soundbar:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the TV have ARC or eARC? | It determines the audio-return capability available to the bar. |
| Does the soundbar have matching ARC/eARC output? | The TV cannot send return audio to an ordinary HDMI input. |
| Is the bar ARC-only or eARC-capable? | An ARC-only bar stays ARC-limited even when connected to an eARC TV. |
| Does the bar have HDMI input(s)? | An input is required for source-through-bar wiring. |
| What passthrough modes are listed? | Resolution, refresh rate, HDR and gaming support are independent specifications. |
| Which cable category does each manual recommend? | Manufacturers may specify High Speed with Ethernet, Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed for different paths. |
| Are you using a certified cable? | Certification gives more confidence than an unqualified “4K” label, especially for eARC or high-bandwidth video. |
Common buying mistakes
Buying a premium cable for an audio-only link without checking the ports
A more expensive cable cannot make an ARC-only soundbar decode eARC audio or add video passthrough. Confirm the TV and bar’s capabilities first.

Assuming every HDMI port on a TV is equivalent
Only the socket labeled ARC/eARC returns TV audio. Other TV inputs may accept video but cannot send sound to the bar through ARC.
Assuming “4K passthrough” means 4K at every frame rate and HDR mode
Passthrough claims are bounded by the exact specification. Read the supported combinations rather than relying on the headline resolution.
Replacing a working cable when the real problem is a setting
Wrong input selection, disabled HDMI control, an incompatible digital-audio mode or a loose connection can all look like a cable failure. Follow the troubleshooting sequence before spending money.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBottom line for each setup
- TV apps or sources connected to the TV: use the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s matching output. A special “4K” cable is usually unnecessary unless the manuals call for a particular certified category.
- Source connected through the soundbar: select a cable category that supports the video mode and confirm the bar’s passthrough specifications for resolution, refresh rate, HDR and gaming.
- eARC audio: use compatible eARC devices and follow the manufacturer’s cable guidance. HDMI.org describes Ultra HDMI Cables as designed for eARC and its highest-resolution modes, while older Ethernet cable categories may work but are not certified for eARC operation.
- Uncertain gaming or high-frame-rate support: connect the source directly to a compatible TV input and return audio over ARC/eARC.
When in doubt, the exact TV and soundbar manuals are authoritative. Port labels identify the connection type; they do not establish every audio format or video-passthrough mode.
