4DEAD is a single-player roguelite action game from Kishiro and publisher Kodansha built around one unforgiving rule: No. 42, a creature created as humanity’s last hope during an alien invasion, dies unless it eats an enemy within four seconds. The free Steam demo launched on October 16, 2026, and reaches the mid-boss of stage two, according to GameWith. Steam lists the full release for January 2027, although the game is currently unreleased.
What is the 4DEAD Steam demo?
4DEAD combines fast combat with a constantly running food timer. Steam describes it as a roguelite action game in which you fight as a creature that dies in four seconds. Instead of treating defeated enemies as an optional reward, the game makes eating the central survival action.

The demo is free to download on Steam and launched four days before Steam Next Fest was scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026. Its playable route extends through the mid-boss of stage two, giving players a look at the opening progression, combat pressure and build choices without representing the complete game.

How the four-second eating rule works
Every meal resets your immediate deadline
The only survival condition is to consume an enemy before the four-second countdown expires. A successful meal extends the timer, so the safest-looking strategy—backing away from danger—can become the wrong one. Players must continually move toward enemy groups, identify reachable targets and keep the next meal in view.

- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Taking damage does not immediately end a run. The failure condition is running out of time without finding food, which creates a different kind of pressure from a conventional health-bar system. You can survive a hit, but you cannot stop hunting for the next enemy.
Just Eats rewards late timing
Eating with one second or less remaining triggers Just Eats. This riskier timing sharply fills the Over Eats gauge, making the final second a potential resource rather than only a warning. The trade-off is straightforward: eating early is safer, while delaying the bite can accelerate access to the game’s strongest state.

Over Eats turns the pressure into momentum
When the Over Eats gauge is full, No. 42 enters an invincible mode that allows rapid enemy consumption. Steam presents it as the ultimate “OVER EATS” mode. Used well, it can convert a crowded encounter into a chain of meals and give you breathing room before the normal timer resumes.
Why the demo’s combat feels different from ordinary action games
4DEAD’s systems create three connected decisions in every encounter:

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Timer pressure versus combat readability: You need to read enemy positions quickly, but the countdown discourages pausing to study a room from safety.
- Ordinary feeding versus Just Eats: Eating immediately protects a run; waiting until one second or less remains builds the Over Eats gauge faster but leaves less room for a missed approach.
- Short-term survival versus route planning: The nearest enemy may be the correct target even if another group would be more valuable, because a missed timer ends the run.
This makes movement part of the attack pattern. Enemy clusters are not simply threats to clear; they are potential fuel. Damage can be tolerated temporarily, while an empty route to the next meal cannot.
Skills and roguelite builds
Stage clears award skills that can be combined into personal builds. The published examples show that upgrades can change both how No. 42 attacks and how quickly it reaches food:

- A duplicate that attacks when No. 42 takes damage, turning some incoming hits into offensive value.
Because skills are selected between stages, the demo’s build system is not just a collection of permanent stat boosts. Choices can favor safer access to meals, faster movement, wider consumption or retaliation after taking damage. The useful combination depends on whether a player struggles more with reaching food, surviving crowded fights or exploiting Just Eats timing.
What is included, and what is not yet known
The demo provides the opening stages through the mid-boss of stage two, but it does not establish the full game’s campaign length, final skill pool or endgame structure. Steam currently labels the complete title unreleased and gives January 2027 as its planned release window. That date is a plan, not a confirmed launch completion.
No independent review score, player-count statistic or performance benchmark is established here. The available details describe the mechanics and the demo’s stopping point rather than a measured assessment of difficulty, frame rate or total content.
System requirements and language support
Steam lists these minimum PC requirements:
- Operating system: Windows 10
- Processor: Intel Core i5
- Memory: 2 GB RAM
The store listing identifies English and Japanese interface and subtitle support. These are minimum listed requirements; they do not guarantee a specific frame rate or resolution on every configuration.
When does 4DEAD release?
The full game is planned for January 2027. As of the demo’s October 16, 2026 launch, Steam still marks 4DEAD as unreleased. Players who want to follow changes to the date or availability should use the game’s official Steam listing, where the current release status and demo access are maintained.

The Bottom Line
4DEAD’s demo is a focused test of whether you can keep moving toward food under a four-second deadline. Its mid-boss-of-stage-two endpoint offers a meaningful sample of the timer, Just Eats, Over Eats and skill-building systems, while the January 2027 full release remains planned rather than available.
