4chan hacked: what happened, what was exposed, and what remains unverified

4chan went offline on April 14, 2025, after an attacker reportedly used a bogus PDF upload to exploit an outdated software package. According to the operator’s later account, the intruder reached a server with database and administrative access, copied database tables and much of the site’s source code, and vandalized the service before moderators shut the servers down.

The site was only partly restored on April 27, 2025. The operator acknowledged database and source-code theft, but contemporaneous reporting did not independently authenticate claims that specific users’ real names, IP addresses, government or university email addresses, or other personal records had been exposed.

What happened in the 4chan hack

4chan disappeared on April 14, 2025. The operator later said the intrusion began when an attacker uploaded a malicious or otherwise bogus PDF that exploited an outdated software package. That account is the clearest public explanation of the entry point, but the reviewed reporting does not identify a CVE, publish a reproducible exploit, or provide an independent forensic report.

Per the operator’s retrospective account, the attacker reached one server, accessed databases and the administrative dashboard, copied database tables and much of the site’s source code, and then began altering or vandalizing the service. Moderators noticed the activity and the servers were halted.

TechCrunch reported that the outage lasted nearly two weeks before a partial return on April 27. At that point, boards and the front page were available, but posting, image uploads and thumbnails were not working. PDF uploads had been disabled temporarily, and the operator said the Flash board would remain offline. That was a dated recovery snapshot, not a statement about 4chan’s current availability.

What data was confirmed stolen?

The strongest sourced claim is that 4chan’s operator said database tables and much of the site’s source code were exfiltrated. That establishes a serious compromise of both information and software, but it does not establish exactly which records were copied or how complete the theft was.

Reports described purported moderator and administrator lists, email addresses, screenshots and other files circulating on rival forums. Ars Technica characterized claims about real names, IP addresses and .edu or .gov addresses as unsubstantiated at publication, while WIRED said it could not confirm whether the circulating material was genuine. Do not treat those posts as a verified database dump or reproduce alleged victims’ information.

Known versus unverified claims

Claim Status supported by reporting
Database tables were copied Stated by 4chan’s operator
Much of the source code was copied Stated by 4chan’s operator
Real names, IP addresses or .edu/.gov emails were exposed Not independently authenticated in the contemporaneous reports reviewed
All user records were dumped No confirmed count or completeness finding was reported

4chan’s public anonymity should not be confused with collecting no identifying information. WIRED noted that the site collected user IP addresses; that general fact does not prove IP addresses were among the stolen material.

Why the operator said the breach happened

4chan’s blog blamed insufficient skilled staff hours to maintain its code and infrastructure, along with years of financial pressure from advertisers, payment providers and service providers. The operator wrote: “Ultimately this problem was caused by having insufficient skilled man-hours available to update our code and infrastructure, and being starved of money for years by advertisers, payment providers, and service providers who had succumbed to external pressure campaigns.”

This is the operator’s explanation, not the conclusion of a named independent investigator. The same account described the damage as catastrophic and said the affected server was replaced. Publicly available reporting reviewed for this article does not establish a separate forensic root-cause analysis.

4chan’s recovery after the attack

  1. April 14, 2025: The service went offline after the reported intrusion.
  2. During the outage: Moderators halted servers after noticing vandalism, according to the operator’s account.
  3. April 27, 2025: The site returned in a limited state; posting, images and thumbnails were unavailable in TechCrunch’s report, and PDF uploads were disabled.

No sourced report in the material reviewed gives a confirmed number of affected users or records, a complete list of compromised fields, or a final independent assessment of the rebuilt environment.

How the later Ofcom case relates to the hack

Ofcom’s March 19, 2026 confirmation decision, published in non-confidential form on April 21, concerns separate duties under the UK Online Safety Act 2023. It is not evidence about how the April 2025 intrusion occurred.

Ofcom said 4chan Community Support LLC failed to maintain a suitable and sufficient illegal-content risk assessment, include required protections in its terms of service, and provide highly effective age assurance to prevent children encountering pornography. The decision listed fixed penalties and April 2, 2026 deadlines:

Duty Fixed penalty
Illegal-content risk assessment £50,000
Terms-of-service provisions £20,000
Age assurance £450,000

Ofcom also described possible daily penalties for continued non-compliance. The published material reviewed here does not establish whether 4chan met those deadlines or whether daily charges were later imposed.

What is still unknown

  • The specific vulnerability or CVE allegedly involved in the outdated package.
  • An independently verified list of stolen database tables and fields.
  • Whether circulating moderator, administrator or user data was authentic, complete or altered.
  • The number of affected accounts or records.
  • A public, independent forensic report confirming the operator’s account.

The defensible conclusion is therefore narrower than many social-media claims: 4chan acknowledged a major server compromise involving database tables and source code, but the precise scope of personal-data exposure was not established by the contemporaneous reporting cited here.
