The San Francisco 49ers reportedly waived wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge with an injury settlement on October 1, 2026, after he sustained a knee injury. Why did the 49ers waive KhaDarel Hodge?
CBS Sports, citing ESPN reporter Nick Wagoner, reported that the 49ers waived Hodge with an injury settlement because of a knee injury. The report does not provide a diagnosis, recovery timetable or other medical details. At the time of the reported move, Hodge had played in all three of San Francisco’s games and recorded one reception for 18 yards, according to CBS Sports/RotoWire’s 2026 report.
What does an injury settlement mean?
The NFL Players Association’s general explanation is that “Injury settlements remove all obligations the team has to you regarding the injury.” Examples include a club’s obligation to pay for treatment until a player is cleared and the player’s claim to future salary in that league year. The settlement may also affect matters such as later-season injury protection, postseason money, Super Bowl tickets, credited-season status and active-player health insurance; some effects depend on the settlement amount. Those are general examples, not the terms of Hodge’s agreement. The cited report does not disclose his settlement payment or the details he accepted.
How is a waiver different from an injury settlement?
They describe distinct parts of the transaction. A waiver puts a player’s contract into a process in which another team can claim it before the player becomes a free agent, according to the NFL’s explanation of waiver mechanics. Could Hodge return to the 49ers?
Possibly, but there is no confirmed plan or transaction. CBS Sports reported that San Francisco might bring Hodge back once he is healthy. That is a possibility reported at the time, not an agreement or a guarantee that he will rejoin the team.

The 49ers announced on August 5, 2026, that they had signed Hodge to a one-year contract. Their announcement noted that he had previously played for the Rams, Browns, Lions and Falcons.
