445 Clones, 157 Cloners, 2 Stars: What 30 Days Taught Me About My Open-Source Mental Health Toolkit

In the 30-day period covered by the author’s retrospective, the toolkit received 445 total GitHub clones from 157 unique cloners, but only 2 stars. That is a striking gap, not a diagnosis: the counts do not show why people cloned the project or why they did—or did not—star it.

The figures come from a first-person DEV Community article published September 21, 2026. They offer a useful case study in the distance between discovery and support, provided each metric is read for what it actually measures.

What the project and its 30-day GitHub figures show

The author describes building 36 free mental-health tools in vanilla JavaScript. According to the author, they run in a browser without a backend, signup, or dependencies, and user data stays on the device. That is the author’s account of the design, not an independent security audit.

The author reported these GitHub figures for the 30-day period:

Measure Reported count What it tells us
Total clones 445 Total clone events reported; one person may account for more than one.
Unique cloners 157 Distinct cloners counted by GitHub in the reporting period.
Stars 2 Two users starred the repository during the period as reported by the author.
Forks 0 No forks were reported.
Watchers 2 Two watchers were reported.
Open issues 0 No open issues were reported.
Discussions 12 The author started all 12; the article reports no community comments.

Clones and unique cloners are different counts: 445 total clone events do not mean 445 people downloaded the repository. The author’s figures show 157 unique cloners and an average of about 2.8 clone events per unique cloner (445 divided by 157). That arithmetic describes the totals; it does not reveal whether repeat clones came from testing, automation, or another reason.

Why two stars are not a straightforward conversion rate

Dividing the reported 2 stars by 157 unique cloners gives about 1.27%. This is a derived ratio, not a conversion rate established by the article. The reporting does not show that the people who cloned were the same people who starred, nor does it establish exactly how the star and clone counts’ measurement windows align. It also does not say what motivated either action.

So the gap is real in the reported totals, but it cannot by itself prove that the repository page failed to persuade visitors, that the tools disappointed users, or that cloners intended to support the project. A clone can mean evaluation, reuse, or an automated event; a star is a separate, low-effort public signal. The figures do not distinguish among those possibilities.

The source article mentions a 5–10% “industry average” for star-to-clone rates, but provides no named study, publisher, or year for that benchmark. It should not be treated as verified context for judging these results.

Discovery brought views, but not evenly across posts

On Dev.to, the author reported 62 articles, 607 total views, and 24 reactions. Those totals average about 9.8 views and 0.39 reactions per article, but averages obscure the distribution: the author says a few posts received 10 or more views while most received none.

The author observed that technical posts with a contrarian hook and a deep algorithm seemed to perform better than listicles, opinion pieces, and meta-synthesis. This is a reported pattern from one writer’s publishing experience, not a controlled comparison. The available figures do not provide post-by-post counts or enough detail to establish what caused the difference.

What the monetization experiments did—and did not—show

The author reported zero sales for a $7 Notion template and a $5 Pro Pack, and zero paid calls for a CBT Analyzer API listing on RapidAPI. These are outcomes from the author’s reported experiments, not evidence that open-source software or developer APIs cannot be monetized generally.

The author’s explanation was that the free toolkit felt complete enough that the paid versions lacked a clear value gap. That is a plausible product hypothesis, but zero sales alone cannot confirm it: the article does not establish how many people saw each offer, what they understood about it, or whether price, fit, trust, or distribution played a role.

The author’s diagnosis is a hypothesis, not a finding

The article’s central interpretation is that presentation and conversion, rather than a shortage of tools, are the bottleneck. The author put it this way: “The bottleneck isn’t building more tools. I have 36. The bottleneck is converting 157 cloners into supporters.”

That is a useful focus for the next round of work, but the counts do not isolate presentation as the cause. The data traces several different stages—article views, repository activity, discussion participation, and paid actions—with different audiences and denominators. No link between an individual view, clone, star, comment, or purchase is reported.

What a maintainer can test next

The author said the next experiments included improving the RapidAPI listing, trying other distribution platforms, and submitting three agents to an AI agent marketplace. These are proposed or reported experiments, not evidence of present marketplace status or likely earnings.

For this project, the author also identified repository presentation and a clearer distinction between the free and paid offerings as areas to test. A useful experiment would change one element at a time and track the relevant step, rather than treating a higher clone count as proof that support improved.

  • For repository presentation: clarify who each tool is for, what it does, how to try it, and what the user should expect before cloning.
  • For conversion measurement: compare stars with unique cloners over aligned reporting windows, while recognizing that aggregate totals still cannot show individual intent.
  • For paid offers: state the specific capability or convenience the paid version adds beyond the free toolkit, then observe whether the offer reaches the intended audience.
  • For community feedback: ask a focused question and make it easy to respond; 12 author-started discussions with no reported community comments show that discussion posts alone did not generate visible replies in this period.

The article closes by asking cloners what would make them star the project and what is missing. That question may produce useful feedback, but until respondents explain their choices, the 445 clones, 157 unique cloners, and 2 stars remain signals to investigate—not an explanation of user behavior.
